To loop a local prerecorded video into your own YouTube Live event from a Mac, use FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 input option and -re to feed the file at normal playback speed. You’ll also need the event’s RTMPS server URL and stream key from YouTube Studio. This workflow loops a local file; it does not replay or rebroadcast another channel’s YouTube Live stream.
Before you start
Have FFmpeg available on your Mac, a local video file, a YouTube channel able to go live, and the server URL and stream key for the specific event. This command is a template, not a tested one-size-fits-all command: the installed FFmpeg build, source file, and upload connection can affect which settings will work.
- Check that your FFmpeg build includes the
libx264encoder if you use the example below. FFmpeg builds vary, and its documentation is regenerated nightly; check documentation for the installed version if an option or encoder is unavailable: FFmpeg documentation. - Confirm the source file’s video and audio streams before deciding whether to re-encode or use stream copy.
- Use a stable upload connection that can sustain the selected video and audio bitrate.
- Keep your stream key private. Anyone with the key may be able to send a stream to your event.
Create the YouTube Live event and get its stream details
- In YouTube Studio, create or select the live event you want to use.
- Open the event’s Live Control Room stream settings and copy its server URL and stream key.
- Use the RTMPS server URL supplied for that event where possible. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted delivery. Do not post the key in screenshots, shared shell history, or logs. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
Choose output settings that fit the file and connection
Codec and transport
YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS encoder guidance supports H.264 video and AAC or MP3 audio. The example uses H.264, AAC, and RTMPS. Its libx264 encoder must be present in your FFmpeg build.
Frame rate, keyframes, and bitrate
YouTube lists frame rates up to 60 fps and recommends a keyframe interval of two seconds, with four seconds as the maximum. The sample GOP values below, -g 60 -keyint_min 60, represent two seconds only at 30 fps. Adjust them to the chosen frame rate; for example, a 60 fps stream needs a 120-frame GOP for a two-second interval.

The sample 4.5 Mbps video bitrate is illustrative, not a universal recommendation. YouTube’s current H.264 encoder guidance, accessed in 2026, recommends 5 Mbps for 1080p30 and 6 Mbps for 720p30. Choose settings appropriate to your resolution and frame rate, and ensure the connection can sustain the total video-plus-audio bitrate. YouTube’s encoder recommendations are available at YouTube’s live encoder settings.
Re-encoding or stream copy
The command below re-encodes the file to provide predictable H.264 output and controlled keyframes. Stream copy can avoid re-encoding when the source streams already suit the destination, but it cannot apply filters and may fail if the target container needs information the source does not provide. For a first setup, re-encoding is the more broadly compatible approach.

Run FFmpeg in a loop
Replace the input path, server URL, and key with your own values. Put -stream_loop -1 before the matching -i: it is an input option, and -1 means loop indefinitely. -re paces a file input at its native rate so FFmpeg does not send it as fast as it can read.

Replace the output URL with the exact RTMPS server URL and stream key from the event, following YouTube’s required URL format. Treat the stream key like a password. If the shell reports that libx264 is unavailable, use an FFmpeg build that includes it or select an encoder supported by your build; do not assume every macOS binary has the same encoders.

Do not use -re this way with a real-time capture or network input. FFmpeg warns that applying a low read rate to a live input can cause packet loss. The pacing option here is for the local prerecorded file.
Test the stream and finish it safely
- Start with a representative part of the video and verify that both motion and audio reach the event.
- Watch Live Control Room for stream health and messages while the encoder runs. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring the stream.
- When finished, stop FFmpeg and confirm the event ends as intended. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived when ended: YouTube’s live stream archive guidance.
Troubleshooting
FFmpeg says the encoder is unavailable
Your installed build may not include libx264. Check the build’s available encoders and consult documentation matching that FFmpeg version before changing the command.

YouTube does not receive the stream
Check that you copied the server URL and stream key from the selected event, entered them in the output URL correctly, and kept the key current. Confirm that your network can reach the ingest server and that Live Control Room is showing the event you intended.
The stream buffers, drops frames, or has poor quality
The selected bitrate may exceed dependable upload capacity, or may not suit the chosen resolution and frame rate. Lower the video bitrate or output settings, then test again while monitoring stream health. A recommended bitrate does not guarantee that a particular connection can sustain it.

The video or audio is incompatible or missing
Inspect the source file’s streams and confirm that it contains the expected audio and video. Re-encoding with H.264 and AAC, as in the template, avoids some source/container compatibility problems that can arise with stream copy.
