If OBS keeps showing the same video, first identify the source in the scene that feeds your stream. OBS’s Media Source plays one file and can loop that file; VLC Video can play a playlist of local files. Turn off the relevant loop option or check that the playlist contains the distinct videos you expect.
Find which OBS source is playing the video
- In OBS, select the scene used for your YouTube stream.
- In the Sources list, identify the source responsible for the repeating picture and sound. Check whether it is Media Source, VLC Video, a browser source, or another source.
- Make changes to the source that is actually playing the video. Media Source and VLC Video have different playback controls; settings for one do not change the other.
OBS describes Media Source as a source for an individual media file. Its Loop option specifies whether the file plays again after playback completes. VLC Video supports multiple playlist items, with separate controls for repeating the playlist and shuffling its order. OBS Project: Media Sources.
Stop a single Media Source file from repeating
- Select the scene’s Media Source.
- Open its properties and confirm that the file field points to the intended video.
- Turn off Loop if the file should play only once, then apply the change.
- Watch the OBS preview through the end of playback to confirm that the file no longer starts again.
If you want a sequence of different local videos, turning off Loop on a single Media Source is not enough: that source is for one file. Use VLC Video for a local playlist instead.
Set up a local playlist with VLC Video
- Install VLC. OBS requires VLC for the VLC Video source; if you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC.
- In the scene’s Sources list, add or select VLC Video.
- In the source properties, add the intended distinct video files to its playlist. Check the entries and order so the playlist contains the files you mean to play.
- Set Loop Playlist according to what should happen after the last item. Turn it off to stop at the end; leave it on to restart the playlist from the beginning.
- Set Shuffle Playlist according to whether you want the listed order or randomized playback. Shuffle changes the order; it does not determine whether the playlist repeats.
- Review the VLC Video source’s visibility behavior if playback stops or restarts when the source is hidden. OBS provides a visibility setting that controls whether playback continues, pauses, or stops while the source is not visible.
- Test the preview long enough to see it advance through the files and, if looping is enabled, reach the end of the playlist.
OBS documents Loop Playlist as On by default and Shuffle Playlist as Off by default. Check the actual settings rather than assuming the defaults are unchanged. OBS Project: Media Sources. Keep YouTube’s viewer loop separate from OBS playback
YouTube’s loop control repeats a video or playlist while someone watches it on YouTube; it does not configure local media playback in an OBS scene. YouTube Help explains that when looping is enabled, “The video will repeat continuously.” YouTube Help: Loop videos or playlists on YouTube.
If OBS is showing a YouTube page through a browser or window capture, investigate the page or player behavior of that source. The Media Source and VLC Video controls apply to local media sources, not to a captured YouTube player.

If a playlist still repeats one file
Check the playlist contents first
Confirm that VLC Video contains multiple distinct files, not repeated entries for the same file. If only one item is present, a looping playlist will naturally play that item again.
Check the source and its visibility behavior
Make sure the video on screen is coming from the VLC Video source you edited. If playback changes when you switch scenes or hide the source, review its visibility behavior: it can control whether playback continues, pauses, or stops while hidden.

Check plugin versions only if you use Media Playlist Source
If the source is the third-party Media Playlist Source plugin, its version 0.1.3 notes, dated April 13, 2025, report a fix for a playlist not continuing when the next file path is the same, including a case where looping played only one file. The notes say the required upstream OBS change is included starting with OBS 31. This is a plugin-specific diagnostic, not a general fix for Media Source or VLC Video. Check the plugin maintainer’s current compatibility information before changing versions.
Test the complete stream before going live
- Watch the OBS preview long enough to confirm the correct source plays the intended files in the expected order.
- If you use a local playlist, verify its end-of-playlist behavior and whether shuffle is enabled.
- Check the actual stream output before broadcasting. OBS recommends testing for a few minutes before a stream. OBS Project: Quickstart Guide.
