Use Playwright’s page.goto(url, { waitUntil: 'networkidle' }) for each URL, then save the screenshot to a unique file. For a batch, start with a serial loop for predictable resource use; use bounded concurrency only when you need more throughput. Treat network idle as a network lifecycle signal—not proof that the content you care about is ready.
Batch screenshots after network idle
This runnable Node.js example uses one Chromium browser and one BrowserContext for a related batch. Each URL gets a new page, and each image gets a distinct filename. Install Playwright first with npm install playwright; install its browser binary with npx playwright install chromium. Create the screenshots directory before running the script.
const { chromium } = require('playwright');
(async () => {
const browser = await chromium.launch();
const context = await browser.newContext();
const urls = [
'https://example.com/',
'https://playwright.dev/',
];
try {
for (const [index, url] of urls.entries()) {
const page = await context.newPage();
try {
await page.goto(url, { waitUntil: 'networkidle' });
await page.screenshot({
path: `screenshots/page-${index + 1}.png`,
fullPage: true,
});
} finally {
await page.close();
}
}
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
})();
Saving by batch index makes names deterministic and prevents collisions even if two URLs have similar paths. If you derive filenames from URLs instead, sanitize them and account for duplicate paths.
What “network idle” does—and does not—mean
Playwright defines networkidle as having no network connections for at least 500 ms. Its Page API labels this state discouraged and advises against using it to determine test readiness; web assertions are preferred. A quiet network does not prove that a particular image, lazy-loaded section, animation, or application state is ready. Conversely, ongoing requests can keep a page network-active.

Use the navigation option when the screenshot should follow navigation settling:
await page.goto(url, { waitUntil: 'networkidle' });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true });
Alternatively, after navigation has committed, wait for the state explicitly:

await page.goto(url, { waitUntil: 'commit' });
await page.waitForLoadState('networkidle');
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true });
If the application element itself is the readiness condition, wait for that element instead. For example, use a locator condition for the heading or report region that must appear in the image. This avoids treating network quiet as equivalent to content readiness.
Playwright also discourages fixed sleeps as a readiness strategy. A fixed waitForTimeout() may be too short on a slow run and unnecessarily long on a fast one; prefer a meaningful application signal.

Organize a batch by session and purpose
Use one context for related pages
A BrowserContext can contain multiple pages, created with context.newPage() or listed with context.pages(). Use one context when pages belong to the same session and should share context-level settings such as viewport, routes, and locale. Use separate contexts when pages need isolation; the right boundary depends on whether state should be shared.
Keep concurrency bounded
The serial example is a reliable starting point. For faster batches, process a limited number of URLs at once rather than creating a page for every URL upfront. A bounded worker pool controls browser resource use and makes failures easier to manage. Playwright’s documentation does not prescribe a universal concurrency number, so choose a limit based on the pages, machine, and workload, then monitor timeouts and memory.

Keep rendering conditions consistent
When images will be compared, hold the browser engine, browser version, viewport, locale, and other rendering-relevant conditions steady. Playwright notes that screenshots can vary with host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode; its visual comparisons guidance recommends using the same environment as the baseline.
Choose the right capture signal
| Need | Use |
|---|---|
| Save each page after navigation settles | goto(url, { waitUntil: 'networkidle' }), then screenshot() |
| Confirm a meaningful page element is ready | Wait for a locator or assert the expected visible state; do not rely on network idle as a test readiness check |
| Manage several tabs in one session | Create pages from one BrowserContext; use context.pages() to enumerate |
| Run visual regression assertions | Use Playwright Test’s expect(page).toHaveScreenshot() and keep the baseline environment consistent |
For Playwright Test visual assertions, toHaveScreenshot() waits until two consecutive screenshots produce the same result before comparing the last image with the expectation. That stabilization behavior is for screenshot assertions; it is not required when simply writing image files.

Troubleshoot common batch failures
networkidlenever resolves: the page may keep requests active. If the purpose is a screenshot rather than proving network inactivity, wait for the specific visible content you need or choose another navigation lifecycle state and an application-specific condition.- The screenshot is missing content: network quiet may have occurred before a lazy image, animation, or application section reached the desired state. Wait for the relevant locator or state before capture.
- Files overwrite one another: ensure each screenshot path is unique. Batch indexes are simple; URL-derived names need sanitization and collision handling.
- Pages behave as if they share state: pages created in one context use the same context-level session and settings. Create separate contexts for work that needs isolation.
- Visual diffs vary between runs: compare in a consistent browser and host environment, with matching viewport and settings. Rendering differences can come from the environment as well as the page.
- The script cannot launch Chromium: install Playwright’s browser binary for the selected engine with
npx playwright install chromium, then rerun the script.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. A single GET request returns a screenshot or PDF; its API options include full-page captures, selector targeting, wait conditions, and bulk capture. The cURL example below saves a WebP image:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before capture; those cleanup steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server exposes screenshot tools to Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does `networkidle` mean every image has loaded?
No. It only describes the network-connection quiet interval; wait for the specific image or page content your capture depends on.
Can I use `waitForLoadState(‘networkidle’)` after navigation?
Yes. After navigation commits, it waits for that lifecycle state; if the state has already occurred in the current document, it resolves immediately.
Should every batch use parallel pages?
No. A serial loop is simpler and predictable. If throughput calls for parallel work, limit the number of pages processed simultaneously.
