To screenshot multiple URLs with a REST API, send an authenticated POST request with a JSON array of URLs to a provider’s documented batch endpoint. If it returns a job ID, poll the status endpoint or use its event stream, then download the image files or archive and save them locally. The exact endpoint, response format, limits, and capture options depend on the provider.

How a batch screenshot request works

A batch request applies shared capture settings—such as viewport size and image format—to several URLs. The API may finish immediately or queue the work. A queued response containing a job ID means the request was accepted, not necessarily that the screenshots are ready.

  1. Create an API key with the chosen provider and keep it outside your source code, such as in an environment variable.
  2. Build a JSON request containing a urls array and any shared options the provider supports.
  3. POST the request to the documented batch endpoint, using the provider’s required authentication header.
  4. Inspect the response. If it contains a job ID, check the documented status endpoint until the job reaches a terminal state, or use the provider’s event stream if available.
  5. Download the returned image URL, image bytes, or archive. Save the response according to its content type and retain any manifest or failure report.

Example: submit a batch to Screenshot API

Screenshot API documents POST /api/v1/screenshot/batch, bearer-token authentication, a urls array, and shared viewport and format options. Its documentation describes a returned batch ID and status polling at GET /api/v1/batch/:batchId, with an event stream at GET /api/v1/batch/:batchId/stream. The following example submits two URLs; the endpoint and response contract are specific to this provider. See the Screenshot API REST API documentation for current details.

export SCREENSHOT_API_KEY="your_api_key"
curl -X POST "https://api.screenshot-api.org/api/v1/screenshot/batch"
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $SCREENSHOT_API_KEY"
  -H "Content-Type: application/json"
  -d '{
    "urls": [
      "https://example.com",
      "https://example.org"
    ],
    "options": {
      "viewport": { "width": 1280, "height": 720 },
      "format": "png"
    }
  }'

Read the response body and HTTP status before writing code that assumes a particular job ID field or output URL. The example documents submission; it does not establish one universal response shape or provide a generic polling or download command that works across providers.

How to save the completed output

Handle the result based on what the API actually returns. A single-capture endpoint may return a CDN URL or redirect to image or PDF bytes; a batch endpoint may instead return an archive link after processing. Check the response headers and provider documentation rather than saving every response with an image extension.

  • Image URL: make a separate authenticated or signed download request if required, then save the response using the intended file extension.
  • Image bytes or redirect: follow redirects as documented and write the binary response to a file; do not decode it as text.
  • ZIP archive: download and extract it to a dedicated output directory. Keep the archive or its manifest if you need to audit which result belongs to each input.
  • Partial failures: preserve any failure report and map successful files back to their original URLs. Do not treat a missing image as a successful capture.

For example, url2image documents a JSON request to /api/v1/batch, job-status lookup at GET /api/v1/jobs/{id}, and archive download at GET /api/v1/jobs/{id}/download. Its described ZIP includes one image per URL, manifest.json with page metadata, and not-rendered.csv for failures. Consult url2image’s batch screenshot page for its current request and service details.

Polling, progress, and retries

For an asynchronous API, poll only the status URL and interval documented by that provider. Stop when the job reports a terminal success or failure state; set a reasonable overall timeout so a stalled job does not keep a worker occupied indefinitely. If an event stream or webhook is available, it can avoid repeated status requests, but use the provider’s documented event format and signature checks.

Retry transient network failures or provider-documented temporary errors with bounded backoff. Avoid resubmitting the entire batch blindly after a timeout: the original job may still be running, and a duplicate submission may create duplicate captures or charges. First check whether the provider supports idempotency keys or lets you look up the original job. Record the input URL, job identifier, status, and output filename for each batch.

Troubleshooting batch screenshot jobs

  • 401 or 403 response: check that the credential is present, valid, and sent using the exact authentication method the endpoint requires. Screenshot API documents missing or invalid authentication as a common error.
  • 400 or invalid-request response: validate the JSON, URL array, and option names against that provider’s schema. Do not assume one provider accepts another provider’s parameter names.
  • 429 or quota error: slow submissions, respect any rate-limit headers, and check the account’s current quota. Screenshot API documents rate limiting and quota exhaustion among common errors.
  • Job remains pending or times out: query the documented status endpoint or event stream, set a bounded wait, and check provider status or quota before submitting a duplicate batch.
  • Some URLs have no output: inspect the per-page status or failure report. A browser may fail to render a page, or the request may have hit a bot check, timeout, or selector error; retry only the affected URLs after correcting the cause.
  • Downloaded file will not open: inspect the content type and status code. The response may be JSON describing an error, an archive rather than an image, or a redirect that your client did not follow.
  • Wrong viewport or missing content: confirm whether capture settings are shared across the batch and whether the provider supports per-URL overrides. Increase the documented wait condition or use a full-page option when content loads below the initial viewport.

Performance, reliability, and cost considerations

Batching reduces client-side request orchestration, but it does not guarantee that each page finishes faster or that every URL succeeds. Keep batches within the provider’s stated limits, track each page independently, and use bounded concurrency for large lists. For dynamic pages, use documented wait conditions rather than an arbitrarily long fixed delay where the API supports selectors, network-idle detection, or similar controls.

Cost and quota behavior vary by provider and plan. Check current pricing and whether unsuccessful renders, retries, cache hits, or queued jobs count toward usage before scaling up. The provider documentation is the authority for those terms; do not infer them from a batch size limit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can one request screenshot URLs with different capture settings?

Only if the chosen API documents per-URL options; the Screenshot API example applies shared options to the batch.

Should I save a batch response as a PNG?

Not until you have checked its content type and response contract. A response may be JSON, a redirect, raw image data, or a ZIP archive.
