If an OBS Media Source stops when one local video ends, open its Properties and turn on Loop. For a playlist, use an OBS VLC Video source and check Loop Playlist. These are different controls; Restart playback when source becomes active does not, by itself, repeat a finished file.
First identify what OBS is playing
“On YouTube” could mean your OBS stream is going to YouTube, or that you are trying to play a YouTube-hosted video. The settings below apply to OBS’s documented local-file Media Source and playlist-capable VLC Video source; they do not establish how a YouTube video embedded in OBS will behave.
- Media Source: a source for a local video or audio file. Use it when you want one file to repeat.
- VLC Video: a source for a playlist. Use it when you want OBS to play multiple files in sequence and repeat the playlist.
OBS documents common local media formats and the settings described here in its Media Sources guide.
Make one local video repeat
- In OBS, select the scene containing the video and locate the source in the Sources list.
- Open the source’s Properties. Confirm it is a Media Source, rather than a VLC Video playlist or another source type.
- Enable Loop, then apply the change and close the Properties window.
- Let the video reach its end. It should begin playing again. OBS’s guide lists Loop as off by default and describes it as replaying the file after playback completes.
Understand the separate restart setting
Restart playback when source becomes active controls what happens when the source is in the current scene and becomes visible. OBS lists this setting as on by default. It can make a file start from its beginning when the source becomes active, but it is not the end-of-file repeat setting. For continuous replay of a single file, enable Loop.

Repeat a playlist instead
- Install VLC if it is not already installed; OBS requires VLC for the VLC Video source to be available.
- If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC, as specified in the OBS guide.
- Add or select a VLC Video source and open its Properties.
- Set up the playlist, then check Loop Playlist if you want it to repeat after the last item.
OBS documents Loop Playlist as on by default. Check the setting rather than assuming it is enabled in your current source.
If it still stops after one video
- Check the source type: confirm the scene contains the Media Source or VLC Video source you intended to configure. A loop option for one source type does not establish the behavior of another.
- Check what is in the source: a single local file needs Media Source’s Loop; a playlist needs VLC Video’s Loop Playlist.
- Check the setting itself: reopen Properties and verify the relevant loop option is enabled.
- Do not substitute the activation setting: restarting when a source becomes active is not the same as replaying it when the file ends.
- Separate OBS playback from YouTube delivery: the title does not establish that YouTube caused the file to stop. First verify whether OBS’s own source playback ends, and which kind of source is in use.
OBS’s Source API Reference documents media restart and stop controls, but it does not establish a specific user-facing shortcut for this situation. The documented fix is to check the appropriate source property.
