Chrome DevTools can capture a selected area, one page element, the visible screen, or the entire page. Choose the method that matches the image you need: use the Command Menu for a drag-selected region, the Elements panel for one DOM element, or Device Mode for a viewport or full-page capture.
Choose the screenshot type you need
| What you want to capture | DevTools method |
|---|---|
| A rectangle you select by dragging | Capture area screenshot |
| One page element | Capture node screenshot |
| Only what is currently visible | Device Mode: Capture screenshot |
| The whole page, including off-screen content | Device Mode: Capture a full size screenshot |
Capture a selected area
- Open the website in Chrome and open DevTools. On Windows, press Ctrl+Shift+I, or use Chrome’s menu to open Developer tools.
- Keep DevTools docked to the browser window. Area capture does not work when DevTools is undocked.
- Press Ctrl+Shift+P to open the DevTools Command Menu. Alternatively, open DevTools’ Customize and control menu and choose Run command.
- Type screenshot, then select Capture area screenshot.
- Drag across the page to select the region you want. Chrome captures the selected area and saves the image.
The Command Menu’s area tool works much like a snipping tool, but the selection is made on the page in Chrome. Chrome DevTools Command Menu documentation (last updated 2024-09-04 UTC) describes the feature.
Capture one page element
- Open DevTools and select the Elements panel.
- Find the element in the DOM tree. To locate it, use the element picker control in DevTools and click the element on the page, or expand the relevant nodes in the tree.
- Right-click the desired DOM node and select Capture node screenshot.
This captures the selected node rather than the whole viewport. Chrome’s guide says the screenshot is saved to Downloads on Windows and macOS. See Chrome DevTools: View and change the DOM.
Capture the visible screen or the full page
- In DevTools, select Toggle device toolbar to open Device Mode.
- In the device toolbar, open More options.
- Choose Capture screenshot for the current visible viewport, or Capture a full size screenshot to include page content outside the viewport.
These two commands produce different results: the first captures only the displayed viewport; the full-size option captures the page beyond the visible area. Device Mode also supports emulated device views. Chrome documents these controls in its Device Mode guide.

If you need screenshots in a script or workflow instead of using DevTools by hand, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns an image or PDF. For example, this cURL command requests a WebP screenshot; replace the URL with the page you want and use your API key:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed before capture; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are not billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for free.
Troubleshooting
- “Capture area screenshot” is unavailable or does not work: Dock DevTools to the browser window and try again. Area capture requires DevTools to remain docked.
- The Command Menu shortcut does not open: Click inside DevTools first, then press Ctrl+Shift+P. You can also open the DevTools menu and choose Run command.
- The screenshot omits content below the fold: Use Device Mode’s Capture a full size screenshot, not Capture screenshot, which is for the current viewport.
- You captured the wrong element: Return to Elements, select the intended DOM node, and invoke Capture node screenshot on that node.
- You cannot find the saved node screenshot: Check the Windows Downloads folder.

Chrome’s DevTools documentation also describes other screenshot approaches, including device and mobile captures. For a broader overview of the available methods, see 4 ways to capture screenshots with DevTools.
