Diagnose the failure by stage: confirm Selenium can find the driver, match Chrome and ChromeDriver major versions, launch Chrome as the same non-root account used by the job, and only then investigate page loading and screenshot output. The sources cited here establish no special Chrome or Selenium failure caused by an Ubuntu server being in India; the location matters only if the actual symptom involves network access or a regional policy.

Identify which part of the screenshot job is failing

A Selenium screenshot can fail because the driver is missing, Chrome will not start, the page has not rendered, or the screenshot was written somewhere unexpected. Record the details before changing packages or flags; otherwise a fix for one stage can obscure a different problem.

  • Ubuntu release and the account that runs the job.
  • Selenium version, Chrome or Chromium binary path and version, and ChromeDriver path and version.
  • The exact Chrome arguments and the command or service configuration used to start the job.
  • The complete exception, ChromeDriver log, and whether the output is absent, blank, clipped, or merely at an unexpected path.

Selenium requires a browser driver executable that it can locate. Check the executable path and discovery setup using Selenium’s driver-location troubleshooting guide.

Check Chrome and ChromeDriver compatibility

Capture both versions from the same environment that runs the job, not just from an interactive shell. Selenium’s Chrome guidance says Selenium 4 supports Chrome 75 and later and that Chrome and ChromeDriver must have matching major versions. If their major versions differ, align them before investigating page readiness or screenshot code: Selenium’s Chrome-specific documentation.

Also verify that Selenium is using the binary you inspected. A server can have more than one browser installation, and the version installed on a user’s PATH may not be the binary configured in the service.

Reproduce Chrome startup under the job’s account

Run the same browser binary with the same arguments under the same operating-system account as the Selenium process. If Chrome cannot launch outside WebDriver, fix the browser installation, permissions, or launch configuration first. ChromeDriver recommends checking its log to confirm which Chrome binary it attempted to start and diagnosing a direct launch failure before debugging WebDriver: ChromeDriver’s startup troubleshooting.

Avoid running Chrome as root

Chrome for Developers identifies running Chrome as root on Linux as a common startup-crash cause. Run the browser as a regular user where possible. Although --no-sandbox may work around some root-related startup failures, ChromeDriver describes that configuration as unsupported and highly discouraged; do not treat it as a routine production fix. Review the same startup guidance before changing sandbox settings.

Confirm the headless implementation matches your Chrome version

Headless behavior depends on which Chrome generation and binary the job uses. Chrome unified its Headless and headful implementations in version 112. Starting with version 132, the old Headless implementation is available only as the separate chrome-headless-shell binary. Confirm the exact executable and mode rather than applying arguments or assumptions from an older setup. Chrome’s current Selenium example uses --headless; see Chrome Headless mode.

Separate page readiness from screenshot capture

If Chrome starts and Selenium navigates successfully, determine whether the page was ready when the screenshot was taken. Wait for the page condition the task actually needs—for example, a particular element to appear—rather than assuming navigation completion means all relevant content has rendered. Inspect whether the result is blank, clipped, or missing, and check the output path and permissions used by the process.

Chrome’s command-line Headless reference documents --screenshot, --window-size, and --timeout. Its CLI screenshot is saved in the current working directory; the CLI timeout limits how long Chrome waits before capturing, even if loading continues. These are Chrome CLI behaviors, not Selenium wait settings. In a Selenium job, configure the viewport and waits through that job’s browser/session and synchronization code, then verify the screenshot destination supported by the Selenium screenshot API you use. See Chrome Headless mode and the Headless command-line reference.

Use logs and remote inspection when rendering is wrong

When startup succeeds but the rendered page is wrong, use the ChromeDriver log alongside the browser session’s navigation and capture details. Chrome Headless documentation describes remote debugging as a way to inspect a running target. It can help distinguish navigation, rendering, and capture symptoms, but inspection does not by itself establish the cause; interpret what you see in the actual session.

Common failure symptoms and fixes

Symptom Check Next step
Driver-location or executable error Whether the ChromeDriver executable exists and is discoverable to the process. Correct the configured path or driver discovery setup, then rerun under the service account.
Chrome exits or crashes at startup ChromeDriver log, binary path, launch arguments, and whether the process runs as root. Reproduce direct startup with the same binary and account; use a regular user and avoid relying on the unsupported --no-sandbox workaround.
Session creation fails after a browser or driver update Actual Chrome and ChromeDriver major versions, plus the binary Selenium launches. Align their major versions and verify the configured binary.
Screenshot is blank or incomplete Page condition at capture time, viewport, selected Headless binary, and logs. Wait for the relevant page condition, set the intended viewport, and inspect the running target if needed.
Screenshot seems missing Working directory, destination, and write permissions for the job’s user. Check the path the screenshot API actually writes to; Chrome CLI output defaults to the current working directory.

If the goal is a screenshot rather than maintaining a Chrome and Selenium environment, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request API:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents using Claude, Cursor, or another MCP client. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does hosting the Ubuntu server in India change how Selenium launches Chrome?

No India-specific Chrome, Selenium, or Ubuntu behavior is established here. Investigate a regional network or service issue only if the observed symptom points to one.

Should I add –no-sandbox to make headless Chrome work?

Not as a routine fix. ChromeDriver calls that workaround unsupported and highly discouraged; use a regular, non-root account where possible.
