For website screenshots plus visual-regression testing, start with Playwright Test. Choose Cypress when screenshots belong to an application-testing workflow and its CI artifacts; use Selenium when WebDriver and its browser integrations are requirements. If your Node.js capture script already does what you need, Puppeteer itself remains a capable option. For an API-based alternative that avoids managing a browser, try ScreenshotNeo first: it removes consent banners, popups and chat widgets before capture, and bills only clean shots.

Which Puppeteer alternative fits your screenshot workflow?

Tool Best fit What the documented workflow provides
ScreenshotNeo Developers who want screenshot capture through an API or an MCP server rather than running browser automation themselves. One GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. Cookie/consent banners, newsletter popups and chat widgets are removed before capture; only clean shots are billed. See ScreenshotNeo.
Playwright Test Teams that want screenshot capture and visual-regression assertions in one test workflow. Viewport, element and full-page screenshots; Playwright Test can create reference screenshots and compare later runs with toHaveScreenshot(). Screenshot documentation · Visual comparisons.
Cypress Teams that already use Cypress for application tests and want screenshots or failure artifacts from those tests. Manual screenshots in interactive and run modes; automatic failure screenshots during cypress run, plus viewport, full-page, clipped, runner and element capture. Screenshots and videos · Screenshot API.
Selenium WebDriver Projects whose browser automation is already organized around WebDriver or whose browser integrations drive the choice. The official documentation covers WebDriver and supported browsers. The cited documentation does not establish comparative screenshot behavior, consistency or performance. WebDriver · Browsers.
Puppeteer Existing Node.js scripts that need direct page or element capture without a separate test framework. Page.screenshot() supports page and element screenshots; Puppeteer documents scrolling a hidden element into view for capture. Puppeteer screenshots.

These are workflow recommendations based on documented capabilities, not a speed or reliability ranking. The official material cited here does not provide comparable benchmark figures.

When Playwright is the strongest framework alternative

Playwright is the clearest fit when a screenshot is both an output and a test assertion. Its screenshot API handles a viewport, a selected element or the whole page, with PNG, JPEG and WebP formats. Playwright Test adds baseline comparison: the first run can generate a reference image, and later runs compare against it using toHaveScreenshot().

That baseline workflow is useful only when the rendering conditions are controlled. Playwright warns that operating system, browser version, hardware, power source and headless mode can affect rendering. Keep baseline creation and comparison runs in the same environment; otherwise differences can reflect the environment rather than a website change. See the visual comparison guidance.

Choose Playwright when visual checks need to live alongside automated browser tests. If you only need to save a page image from a small Node script, switching frameworks may add setup without solving a real problem.

When Cypress is a better fit

Cypress suits teams that already run application tests with Cypress and want screenshots associated with those tests. You can take screenshots manually in cypress open or cypress run; Cypress also captures screenshots automatically after test failures during cypress run. Automatic failure screenshots do not happen in cypress open. By default, screenshots go to cypress/screenshots. The Cypress guide also describes Cypress Cloud for storing, viewing and sharing run artifacts.

The screenshot API includes viewport, full-page, runner, clipped and element captures. Full-page capture scrolls and stitches the page, so fixed or sticky elements may appear more than once in the resulting image. If those elements matter to the image, inspect the output or choose a capture scope that avoids the stitching issue.

When Selenium or Puppeteer still makes sense

Choose Selenium for a WebDriver-centered project

Selenium belongs on the shortlist when WebDriver alignment or its documented browser support is a selection requirement. The Selenium pages cited here do not provide enough screenshot-specific detail to compare capture controls, image consistency, ease of use or speed against Playwright, Cypress or Puppeteer. Choose it for the broader browser-automation fit, not an assumed screenshot advantage.

Keep Puppeteer when direct capture is enough

Puppeteer already documents page screenshots through Page.screenshot() and element screenshots. It is a reasonable choice for an existing Node-oriented script that navigates to pages and saves images. An alternative is worth adopting when it solves a concrete need—such as Playwright Test’s visual assertions, Cypress failure artifacts or a WebDriver requirement—not because Puppeteer is unable to capture screenshots.

Consider a screenshot API when you do not need to own the browser workflow

A framework runs in your automation environment; a screenshot API lets your application request a capture without setting up that browser workflow itself. ScreenshotNeo is the first API alternative to try for that use case: consent banners are accepted and removed before capture, along with known newsletter popups and chat widgets, and only clean shots are billed. Its API can return image formats or PDFs, and its MCP server offers screenshot tools for AI-agent workflows. This is a different operating model from adopting another browser test framework.

Browserless is another adjacent option if the requirement is hosted browser execution. The available product information establishes that category, but not exact screenshot features, pricing or service limits, so it is not directly ranked here as a screenshot-framework replacement. Visit Browserless for its own current details.

How to choose without relying on speed claims

  • Need screenshot baselines and assertions? Evaluate Playwright Test and keep capture and comparison environments consistent.
  • Already testing with Cypress? Use its screenshots and run-failure artifacts; account for stitched full-page captures when sticky elements are present.
  • Already have a working Node capture script? Keep Puppeteer unless a specific workflow gap justifies migration.
  • Need WebDriver alignment? Evaluate Selenium for browser-automation fit; do not assume screenshot performance benefits based on the cited documentation.
  • Want a capture endpoint instead of managing browser automation? Try ScreenshotNeo’s API or MCP server.

There are no documented comparative benchmark figures in the sources cited here, so a claim that one of these tools is categorically faster or more accurate would go beyond the evidence.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Cypress take automatic screenshots in cypress open?

No. Cypress documents automatic screenshots after failures during cypress run; screenshots in cypress open must be requested manually.

Why can Playwright visual comparisons change between runs?

Rendering can vary with the host operating system, browser version, hardware, power source and headless mode. Playwright recommends using the same environment as the reference baseline.
