To capture a page with headless Chrome on Selenium Grid, create a remote WebDriver session with Chrome’s --headless option, navigate to the URL, wait for the page state you need, and call a WebDriver screenshot method. In Python, driver.save_screenshot("page.png") saves a PNG; for a remote session, consider returning the image bytes and writing them on the test runner so you know where the file lands.
Capture a page through a Selenium Grid session
The screenshot request belongs to the WebDriver session, not to Chrome’s command line. Selenium’s screenshot endpoint captures the current browsing context. The following Python example combines the documented Chrome headless argument, Remote WebDriver and screenshot API. Replace the Grid address and URL with values for your deployment.
from selenium import webdriver
from selenium.webdriver.chrome.options import Options
options = Options()
options.add_argument("--headless")
driver = webdriver.Remote(
command_executor="http://GRID_HOST:4444",
options=options,
)
try:
driver.get("https://example.com")
# Wait for the page content you need to capture before taking the screenshot.
saved = driver.save_screenshot("page.png")
if not saved:
raise OSError("Selenium could not save page.png")
finally:
driver.quit()
Chrome documents --headless as the option for starting Chrome in headless mode. The Grid URL, browser image and capabilities are deployment-specific; use the endpoint and configuration supported by your Selenium Grid installation. Selenium WebDriver documentation describes the WebDriver interaction model; Chrome headless documentation covers headless Chrome.
Wait for the state you intend to capture
A screenshot records what the browser displays when the screenshot command runs. Navigation completing does not necessarily mean that all page content relevant to your test has rendered. Wait for the element or condition that matters, such as a result panel appearing or a loading indicator disappearing. Use a condition tied to that page rather than assuming a fixed sleep is sufficient.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
For example, add an explicit wait for a known element:
from selenium.webdriver.common.by import By
from selenium.webdriver.support import expected_conditions as EC
from selenium.webdriver.support.ui import WebDriverWait
# After driver.get(url):
WebDriverWait(driver, 20).until(
EC.visibility_of_element_located((By.CSS_SELECTOR, "main"))
)
driver.save_screenshot("page.png")
Choose a selector that represents the content your test needs; the 20-second timeout here is an example, not a guarantee that every page will load within that period.

Choose where the screenshot data should go
Python’s Selenium binding offers file, byte and Base64 forms. With a remote browser, a file path may refer to the environment on the Grid node rather than the test runner. If your next step runs on the test runner—such as attaching an image to a test report—retrieve the screenshot data and write it locally instead of assuming that a remote file path is shared.
| Method | Result | Useful when |
|---|---|---|
driver.save_screenshot(path) |
Saves a PNG file and returns False on an I/O error. |
You want a file and know that the path is writable in the process environment handling the save. |
driver.get_screenshot_as_file(path) |
Saves a PNG file; Selenium recommends a full path. | You want to specify an explicit destination path. Confirm which environment owns that path for your remote setup. |
driver.get_screenshot_as_png() |
Returns PNG bytes. | You want to write the image on the test runner or pass bytes to another library. |
driver.get_screenshot_as_base64() |
Returns a Base64 representation. | You need an encoded representation for a report or transport format that accepts Base64. |
To save returned bytes on the test runner:
png = driver.get_screenshot_as_png()
with open("page.png", "wb") as image_file:
image_file.write(png)
Selenium documents the Python screenshot methods in its Chromium WebDriver API and Remote WebDriver API. Consult documentation for the version deployed on your Grid when configuring remote file transfer; the method signatures alone do not establish how a particular Grid installation transfers node-side files.

What the screenshot includes—and what it does not promise
The ordinary WebDriver screenshot captures the current browsing context or window. Do not assume it produces a vertically stitched, full-page image: full-page behavior depends on the browser and driver, and the standard screenshot call is not a universal full-page guarantee. If a test needs a full document capture, verify that capability against the exact browser and driver versions in your Grid environment.
Chrome’s current headless documentation describes modern headless and headful modes as using unified Chrome code. It also notes that, since Chrome 132.0.6793.0, the old Headless implementation is available only as the separate chrome-headless-shell binary. When headless behavior differs from expectations, check the actual Chrome version and browser image running on the Grid node.

Screenshot through Selenium versus Chrome’s command line
Chrome’s --screenshot command-line option is a separate workflow: Chrome saves screenshot.png in its current working directory, and the command can be used with --window-size. That does not request a screenshot from a Selenium Grid WebDriver session. Use the WebDriver API when the capture is part of a remote browser test; use Chrome’s CLI only when you intentionally run a direct Chrome command outside that session. See Chrome’s headless command-line documentation.
Troubleshooting
- The screenshot file is missing on the test runner. A path used during a remote session may not be a local test-runner path. Use
get_screenshot_as_png()and write its bytes locally, or consult the documentation for your Grid version’s remote file-transfer behavior. save_screenshot()returnsFalse. Selenium’s file API returnsFalseon an I/O error. Check that the destination directory exists and is writable in the environment performing the save; alternatively, retrieve PNG bytes and write them on the client.- The capture shows a loading state or missing content. The screenshot reflects the page at call time. Wait for a specific element or rendering condition that identifies the state your test needs before capturing.
- The screenshot looks different from a local run. Confirm the Chrome version and image used by the Grid node. Chrome’s documentation distinguishes the modern unified headless mode from the old implementation, which since Chrome 132.0.6793.0 is available only as
chrome-headless-shell. - You expected a full-page capture. The standard WebDriver screenshot call captures the current browsing context; it does not establish a universal full-page capture across Grid configurations. Verify the relevant browser and driver behavior for your deployment.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Selenium Grid return a screenshot as Base64?
Yes. Selenium’s Python Remote WebDriver API provides get_screenshot_as_base64(); it also provides a PNG-bytes method.
Can I use the same Selenium screenshot method with headless and visible Chrome?
The screenshot call is made on the WebDriver session; headless mode is selected separately through Chrome options. Check the Chrome and driver versions used by the Grid node if the render differs.
