A YouTube Premiere does not need a continuous upload stream from your internet connection while it plays. Upload the video to YouTube ahead of the scheduled event; YouTube serves playback to viewers. Your upstream bandwidth affects how long that upload takes, and a separate live broadcast would use bandwidth continuously. A long runtime alone is not enough to determine the upload speed you need.
What bandwidth a Premiere actually uses
A Premiere lets creators and viewers watch a newly uploaded video together in real time. The creator uploads the file, adds its details, then publishes it immediately as a Premiere or schedules it for later. During the event, viewers watch playback delivered by YouTube; the creator does not have to send the video’s playback continuously from home. See YouTube’s Premiere instructions.
That means there is no special broadband upload-speed requirement based on the video’s runtime. The connection matters for transferring the file before the Premiere, and for any distinct live stream you choose to run alongside it.
Estimate upload time from file size and upload speed
The main inputs are the encoded file’s size and the sustained upstream speed actually available to your device. A useful ideal estimate is:

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Transfer time in seconds ≈ file size in bits ÷ upload rate in bits per second.
For example, if a file is 8 gigabytes (about 64 gigabits) and your sustained upload rate is 20 Mbps, the ideal transfer time is about 3,200 seconds, or 53 minutes. Actual uploads can take longer when throughput varies or other devices and traffic share the connection. Treat the result as a planning estimate, not a guaranteed completion time.

Runtime alone cannot tell you the file size. Export resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, and the video’s visual complexity all affect how much data the encoded file contains. Check the actual exported file size and measure your upstream rate rather than estimating from minutes of video.
Do not confuse video bitrate with internet upload speed
These are related but different measurements:
- Video encoding bitrate describes how much data the video represents per second of playback. It contributes to the file size.
- Internet upload speed describes how quickly your connection can send the finished file to YouTube.
- Live-stream ingestion bitrate is the rate an encoder sends continuously during a separate live broadcast.
YouTube’s recommended SDR upload encoding settings list the following video bitrates; the page does not state a publication year. These are encoding recommendations, not minimum broadband speeds for uploading:

| Upload video output | YouTube-recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 24, 25, or 30 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 48, 50, or 60 fps | 12 Mbps |
| 2160p/4K at standard frame rates | 35–45 Mbps |
| 2160p/4K at high frame rates | 53–68 Mbps |
These figures come from YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings. The 4K upload recommendations do not mean that a 4K Premiere is supported: YouTube’s Premiere workflow says output above 1080p is unsupported.
Premiere resolution limits and scheduling
YouTube’s Premiere instructions state that output greater than 1080p is unsupported. The same workflow also excludes 360/VR180 videos and Shorts. Check the current Premiere eligibility and setup guidance before choosing an export specifically for a scheduled Premiere.

Upload well before the event, leaving time for both file transfer and YouTube processing. The lead time depends on file size, actual sustained upload speed, and processing; YouTube’s official pages do not promise one processing duration that applies to every video.
If you are also running a live broadcast
A separate live broadcast is different from the Premiere playback: an encoder sends video continuously, so the available upload capacity must support its configured bitrate. Choose settings for the live broadcast’s resolution, frame rate, and codec from YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate table. YouTube’s H.264 recommendations include 10 Mbps for 1080p30 and 17 Mbps for 1080p60; the page does not state a publication year. Other resolutions, frame rates, and codecs such as AV1 or H.265 have separate values.

Allow headroom for the stream and other traffic
YouTube recommends available upload capacity 20% above the combined primary and backup stream bitrates. For instance, a 10 Mbps primary stream plus a 10 Mbps backup stream implies planning for about 24 Mbps of upload capacity: 20 Mbps × 1.2. That is an arithmetic application of YouTube’s guidance, not a separate platform-published threshold. Other devices using the same connection can reduce the capacity available to the encoder.
Test the connection before going live
YouTube advises testing the upload bitrate, using representative motion and audio, and monitoring stream health during the event. For computer live streaming, YouTube recommends an Ethernet connection; a cable can make the local connection more reliable, but it cannot increase the upload capacity supplied by your internet plan. See YouTube’s streaming tips and filming tips for live streaming.

- Export a Premiere-compatible version at no more than 1080p, then note the actual file size.
- Measure the sustained upload rate available on the device and network you will use. Estimate transfer time using file size divided by upload rate, then allow extra time for variable throughput and processing.
- Upload the file to YouTube ahead of the scheduled Premiere, complete its details, and schedule or publish it as a Premiere using YouTube’s Premiere workflow.
- If you will also broadcast live, configure the encoder from YouTube’s table for the chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate; account for the combined primary and backup rates plus the recommended headroom.
- Test a representative live broadcast beforehand and monitor YouTube’s stream health during the event. Use a wired connection for computer streaming where practical, while remembering that it does not add ISP capacity.
Common bandwidth misunderstandings
- “A two-hour Premiere needs two hours of upload bandwidth.” No. The file is uploaded before the event; its size and your sustained upstream rate determine transfer time.
- “An 8 Mbps video bitrate means I need an 8 Mbps internet plan.” Not necessarily. Encoding bitrate helps determine file size; upload speed determines how quickly that file transfers. They are not interchangeable requirements.
- “The 4K upload bitrate table proves I can Premiere a 4K video.” No. YouTube’s upload encoding recommendations and its Premiere output limit are separate guidance; the Premiere workflow does not support output above 1080p.
- “A cable fixes a slow upload plan.” No. Ethernet may improve the connection between the computer and router, but it cannot raise the ISP-provided upload capacity.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a continuous YouTube channel stream rather than a scheduled Premiere, StreamNeo is a separate option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the files as uploaded up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and the first day is free with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start your free first day.
