First check whether you filed a Content ID dispute, a counter notification, or whether a copyright claimant filed a removal request. Those are different processes, and the available action depends on which one applies.
Identify what happened in YouTube Studio
“Copyright dispute” can refer to several different actions. Check the notice in YouTube Studio and the related email before trying to retract anything. There is no universal “retract dispute” control.

| Content ID claim or dispute | A claimant made an automated claim; you submitted a dispute | You challenged the claim. This is not itself a copyright strike. |
| Counter notification | You, or an authorized representative, submitted it | You made a legal request after a copyright removal. YouTube forwards it to the claimant. |
| Copyright removal request or active strike | The claimant submitted the request | YouTube removed, or may be scheduled to remove, content following a takedown request. A valid request can result in a strike. |
YouTube Help distinguishes these procedures and does not decide who owns the copyright or whether a copyright exception applies. If you are unsure about your rights, consider getting legal advice.
If you submitted a Content ID dispute
YouTube Help states: “Can I cancel a dispute after it’s submitted? No, once you’ve submitted a dispute, it can’t be canceled.” That is YouTube’s stated policy on its “Dispute a copyright claim” page, accessed October 3, 2026. You cannot retract the submitted dispute through Studio or by contacting YouTube.
#1 Best Overall
Review the claim and any resolution options shown in Studio. YouTube says a claimant generally has 30 days to respond to an initial dispute; if there is no response, the claim expires and is released. That timing is not a guarantee that a particular claim will expire or be released.
A claimant may release or reinstate the claim, let it expire, or submit a copyright removal request. If YouTube considers a removal request valid, it removes the video and applies a copyright strike. Appealing a claim can also lead to a removal request and strike. Do not treat an appeal or a request to withdraw your dispute as a way to guarantee strike prevention.
If you submitted a counter notification
A counter notification is different from a Content ID dispute. You may retract it only if the claimant has not responded yet. Use one of these routes:
- Reply directly to YouTube’s confirmation email and clearly state that you want to retract your counter notification.
- Alternatively, email copyright@youtube.com and explicitly request retraction.
If the claimant has already responded, YouTube’s guidance does not provide the same retraction route. Do not assume the email method remains available. Keep the confirmation email and any response for your records.
Rank #3
A counter notification is a legal process, not a routine strike-avoidance tool. YouTube says to submit one only when the removal was a mistake or misidentification. Your contact details are shared with the claimant, and an authorized representative may submit on your behalf.
If you want a copyright removal request withdrawn
The claimant—not the uploader—must retract the original copyright removal request. You can ask the claimant to do so, but asking YouTube to remove only the strike is not the same thing.
Rank #4
- In YouTube Studio, open Active copyright strikes.
- Select the relevant action and choose Contact claimant.
- Ask the claimant to retract the copyright removal request itself. Keep the request and any reply.
YouTube says retracting the removal request can clear the associated strike, subject to other videos associated with the matter. The claimant’s decision is not under your control, so contacting them cannot guarantee withdrawal or prevent a strike.
If your channel already has a copyright strike
YouTube lists three ways to resolve a strike. Choose based on what happened; a counter notification is appropriate only if the removal was mistaken or the content was misidentified.

- Complete Copyright School and wait. YouTube says the strike can expire after 90 days if you complete Copyright School.
- Ask the claimant to retract the removal request. The claimant must retract the request itself; a request to remove only the strike is insufficient.
- Submit a counter notification if the removal was a mistake or misidentification. This begins a legal process, so do not use it merely to try to avoid a strike.
If YouTube forwards a valid counter notification to the claimant, the claimant has 10 US business days to provide evidence of legal action to keep the content from being reinstated. This period is described under US legal procedure and should not be treated as a universal copyright deadline.

If YouTube gives you a scheduled removal after an appeal, its guidance says you have seven days to act before the content is removed and a strike is applied. Check the notice for the deadline and available choices; do not assume that a standard Content ID dispute can be canceled to stop the scheduled removal.
A claimant generally has seven days to respond to an appeal. These timelines describe YouTube’s stated process, not a guarantee about how an individual case will resolve.
Keep a clear record and avoid unsupported steps
- Save the Studio notice, the confirmation email, claimant correspondence, and any deadlines or case details.
- Identify precisely whether you are dealing with a Content ID dispute, a counter notification, or a removal request before contacting anyone.
- Do not submit false information or a counter notification unless the removal was a mistake or misidentification.
- If ownership, permission, or a copyright exception is uncertain, seek legal advice rather than relying on YouTube to decide the underlying rights.
These steps describe YouTube Help’s platform procedures; they are not a decision about the legality of a particular video or individualized legal advice.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you also run a YouTube channel with uploaded videos on a continuous loop, StreamNeo is a separate cloud service for keeping that stream live. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams uploaded video, not a camera feed. It supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one price, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and the first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing: $9.99 per month.
