Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Use await page.waitForSelector() before calling page.screenshot(). Add { visible: true } when the target must be visible, rather than merely present in the DOM.
Wait for the element, then take the screenshot
This runnable example waits up to 10 seconds for a visible element, then captures the whole page. Replace #target with a selector that identifies the element on your page.
const element = await page.waitForSelector('#target', {
visible: true,
timeout: 10_000,
});
if (!element) {
throw new Error('Target element was not found');
}
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png' });
The essential part is awaiting the wait before the screenshot. If the selector already matches, the wait resolves immediately. Otherwise, Puppeteer waits for the requested condition and, if it is not met before the timeout, throws an error. The API reference reviewed for this guide displayed Puppeteer version 25.12.0; check the current waitForSelector reference if you are maintaining code across versions.
Choose what “ready” means
A selector wait can establish different conditions. Pick the one that matches what the screenshot needs:

| Goal | Wait | What it establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Element exists | await page.waitForSelector('#target') |
A matching element is in the DOM. It need not be visible. |
| Element is visible | await page.waitForSelector('#target', { visible: true }) |
A match is present and is not hidden with display: none or visibility: hidden. |
| Element is hidden or gone | await page.waitForSelector('.loading', { hidden: true }) |
The selector is absent or its match is hidden. Use this for a loading overlay, not to wait for the screenshot target to appear. |
Visibility does not prove that images, fonts, animations, or other asynchronous content inside the element have finished loading. If your application exposes a reliable readiness signal, wait for that as well.
Wait for application-specific readiness
When a selector is insufficient—for example, the element appears before its data is populated—use page.waitForFunction() to check a condition your application defines. The function is evaluated repeatedly until it returns a truthy value.

await page.waitForFunction(() => {
const target = document.querySelector('#target');
return target?.getAttribute('data-state') === 'loaded';
}, { timeout: 10_000 });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png' });
Use a signal the page actually provides; data-state="loaded" in this example is illustrative, not a Puppeteer convention. See the waitForFunction API.
Capture the whole page or just the element
After waiting, use page.screenshot() for a page image. If the output should contain only the selected node, call screenshot() on the returned element handle instead:

const element = await page.waitForSelector('#target', {
visible: true,
timeout: 10_000,
});
if (!element) {
throw new Error('Target element was not found');
}
await element.screenshot({ path: 'element.png' });
The element screenshot method attempts to scroll the element into view if needed. Puppeteer’s screenshot guide demonstrates waiting for a navigation lifecycle condition such as networkidle2 before taking a page screenshot. Navigation completion and target readiness are separate checks; combine them if both matter to your page.
Timeouts, errors, and frames
The documented default timeout for waitForSelector() is 30 seconds. Set a per-wait timeout, configure the page default with page.setDefaultTimeout(), or pass 0 to disable the timeout. An ordinary wait that does not find a match before the timeout throws. A hidden wait can resolve with null when no match exists. The options also support a cancellation signal. See the wait options reference and setDefaultTimeout reference.

- Timeout error: Check that the selector matches the rendered page, that the page has reached the relevant state, and that the timeout allows enough time. Catch the error if your script should handle a missing target rather than stop.
- Screenshot happens too early: Ensure the wait is awaited and occurs before the screenshot call. For delayed content, wait for an application-specific signal rather than assuming visibility means all content is ready.
- Target is in an iframe: Wait on the corresponding frame, not the main page. The Frame waitForSelector API documents selector waits within a frame and across navigations.
When to use a locator instead
Puppeteer describes locators as its recommended API for selecting and interacting with elements; they automatically wait for presence and an appropriate state. A locator’s wait() can be useful when you only need to wait for the element state. Use waitForSelector() when a direct selector wait or the returned ElementHandle is useful, such as for an element-only screenshot. See the page interactions guide.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I wait for an element and capture only that element?
Yes. Await page.waitForSelector(), then call screenshot() on the returned element handle.
Does visible: true mean the element’s content is fully loaded?
No. It checks visibility, not whether asynchronous content inside the element has finished loading.
