Keep a track-by-track rights register and save the actual written license or permission for every recording in your rotation. Check that each grant covers continuous live streaming on YouTube, the channel and territories involved, monetization, and any archive or replay. YouTube can still interrupt a licensed stream if the rights holder has not allowlisted your channel in Content ID, so document that confirmation separately.

What your documentation needs to establish

YouTube makes the stream operator responsible for having the rights needed to use live content on Google services, including music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers, and other royalty participants. Its livestream terms say those required licenses and approvals must be maintained for the duration of the terms. Read YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions.

A playlist, purchase receipt, credit line, or label such as “free” is not by itself proof that you have permission for this use. YouTube advises that music must be public domain or used with permission, and that a description credit does not establish copyright safety or prevent a Content ID match. YouTube’s tips to find safe music explain the distinction.

Why one song can require more than one permission

A recording can involve at least two distinct rights layers: the master recording and the underlying musical composition. A record label commonly controls master-use rights, while publishers, performing rights organizations, or collecting societies may control or administer composition-related rights. The relevant rights may be split among parties and vary by territory. YouTube describes these layers in its music rights management guidance.

For each track, identify both layers and record who granted each permission. If an agent or service grants rights on behalf of an owner, keep enough documentation to identify that authority and the scope of the grant. Do not assume that permission for a composition also clears a particular recording, or vice versa.

Build a track-by-track rights register

Use a spreadsheet or rights-management system that points to a durable folder containing the underlying evidence. These fields are a practical checklist for organizing and reviewing your records; YouTube does not prescribe this exact format, and the actual agreement and applicable local requirements determine what is sufficient.

Record for each track What to capture
Track and recording identity Title, version, artist or composer, any recording identifier, and the exact audio file or version used in the stream.
Rights holders and rights granted Identify the master recording and composition separately. Name each relevant rights holder or authorized licensing agent, and specify what that party authorized.
Evidence and terms Link the signed agreement, written permission, license ID, and any relevant invoice or receipt. Keep a dated copy of the terms in force when permission was granted.
Permitted use State plainly whether the grant covers continuous or 24/7 YouTube livestreaming, simultaneous streaming, and the specific channel or account. Record whether it also covers an archived replay or clips; do not infer live rights from permission for an ordinary video.
Scope and conditions Capture territories, start and end dates, renewal terms, monetization permissions, attribution requirements, and any restrictions on looping, edits, or redistribution addressed by the agreement.
Content ID coordination Record the Content ID status and any asset or reference identifiers supplied by the owner. Log the allowlist request date, channel identifier provided, owner’s written response, confirmed territory scope, and later claim or dispute correspondence.
Review responsibility Name a responsible contact and set a review date before expiry or before a change to the track, channel, audience territory, monetization, or archive behavior.

Document licenses in a repeatable workflow

  1. Inventory the actual audio. List every track and exact recording in the rotation. Verify the files themselves rather than relying on playlist labels or uploader descriptions.
  2. Identify the rights and grantor. Find the relevant master and composition rightsholders, then check that each person or service granting permission is authorized to do so for the territories where you stream.
  3. Get terms for the real use. Obtain written permission that expressly covers continuous YouTube livestreaming, your channel or account, territories, monetization, and the license term. Ask separately about archived streams, replays, and clips if you will create them.
  4. Preserve the evidence. Save the signed grant or written permission and a dated copy of its terms in a durable folder. Link those files from the corresponding register entry.
  5. Request Content ID allowlisting. Where applicable, ask each relevant rights owner to allowlist your streaming channel. Keep the request, channel identifier, written confirmation, and any stated territory limits together. YouTube says a stream can still be interrupted without allowlisting even when you have a license. See YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.
  6. Monitor the live stream and archive. Save timestamps, warnings, interruption notices, claim details, correspondence, and how each issue was resolved. If you archive the broadcast, check the saved video separately: YouTube says Content ID claims can be made after a stream ends if you choose to archive it.
  7. Review when something changes. Recheck the register before a permission expires and whenever the music, channel, territory, monetization plan, or archive settings change.

Do not assume Creator Music or a “free” label covers live use

YouTube’s Creator Music FAQ says Creator Music currently does not support licensing for live content. Its usage-details guidance says Creator Music tracks are for long-form videos, not livestreams, and that terms such as territories and allowed uses vary by track. Creator Music FAQ · Understand Creator Music usage details. For a 24/7 stream, obtain permission that specifically covers live use rather than treating an on-demand video license as a substitute.

What to do if YouTube interrupts a licensed stream

A license and uninterrupted transmission are separate issues. YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches. It may show a placeholder and warning, interrupt the stream, or terminate it if the matched content remains. If you have permission, contact the relevant owner and request Content ID allowlisting for the correct channel; retain the response and follow up with YouTube through the applicable claim or support process. Do not treat the existence of a license as proof that the automated match will be bypassed.

If the broadcast was archived, review the recording after the stream ends for any Content ID claim, and preserve the claim details and resolution as a separate record from the live interruption.

Keep the stream running without keeping a computer on

StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or make a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; the cloud loops the video so your computer, OBS, and home connection do not need to stay on. Its role is to keep the stream running, not to grant music rights: you still need the permissions and records described above.

Or let it run in the cloud

With StreamNeo, nothing has to stay on at home; uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot. It can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and monthly access is $9.99 per month. Upload your video, add the stream key, and go live. Start your free StreamNeo day, or learn more at StreamNeo.
