To stream from OBS to YouTube, create or select a live stream in YouTube Studio, copy its stream key, then enter it in OBS under Settings > Stream. On a low-end PC, start with a modest resolution and frame rate—480p at 30 fps is a sensible first test—and reduce the load further if OBS struggles. Treat the stream key like a password.
Before you start
- Install OBS Studio and sign in to the YouTube account that will host the stream.
- Make sure live streaming is available on that YouTube channel and that you can open YouTube Studio’s live controls.
- Test your internet connection’s upload capacity. Download speed does not tell you how much bandwidth is available to send a stream.
- Use a representative test: include the audio sources, scene changes and movement you expect in the real stream. YouTube advises testing before going live and choosing quality that suits a reliable connection. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance
Connect OBS to your YouTube stream
- In YouTube Studio, create a live stream or open the scheduled stream you want to use. Open its stream settings or Live Control Room and locate the stream key.
- Copy the key. Keep it private: YouTube uses it to identify where the encoder should send its feed and to accept that feed. Anyone with access to it may be able to send video to your stream.
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream. Choose YouTube as the service, then paste the key into the stream-key field. The exact available service choices can vary by OBS version.
- Click Apply, then OK. Set up your scene and audio, then select Start Streaming in OBS.
- Check YouTube Studio’s live preview and stream health before sharing the stream widely. Confirm that both picture and audio are arriving as expected.
If the key is exposed, reset it in YouTube’s Live Control Room and replace the saved key in OBS. YouTube’s instructions are in Manage live stream settings.
Choose settings a low-end PC can handle
There is no universal low-end-PC preset: performance depends on the processor or GPU, the encoder, scene complexity, output settings and connection. Start conservatively, change one setting at a time, and test before a real broadcast.
Start with resolution and frame rate
For a first attempt on a weaker machine, try 480p at 30 fps. If the computer renders and encodes smoothly and the upload connection remains stable, try 720p at 30 fps. Avoid jumping straight to 60 fps; OBS recommends trying 30 fps when 60 fps is not working.

Set bitrate and keyframes
For H.264, YouTube’s current guidance accessed in 2026 lists the following video bitrate recommendations. These are ingestion recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular PC or connection can sustain them.

In OBS, use CBR for the rate control and set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. YouTube says not to exceed four seconds. If your upload connection cannot reliably support the recommended bitrate, lower the output demands or bitrate and test again rather than assuming the recommended number will work everywhere. Leave upload headroom
YouTube recommends keeping about 20% headroom above the total stream bitrate. Check upload speed, not download speed, and account for other people or devices using the same connection: their traffic can reduce the capacity available to OBS. Reduce encoding and rendering load
Check for a compatible hardware encoder
If OBS offers a compatible hardware encoder, try it: hardware encoding can move encoding work from the CPU to a specialized component in the GPU. Which options appear depends on the installed hardware and system support, so do not assume a particular encoder is available. Older encoder generations may also trade image quality for performance. Simplify what OBS has to process
If OBS reports rendering or encoding overload, reduce output resolution or frame rate, simplify scenes, and cut competing GPU work. For example, remove unnecessary animated sources or filters while testing. Lowering output to 480p30 can be more useful than repeatedly changing bitrate when the issue is that the PC cannot render or encode frames fast enough.
Meeting OBS’s basic system requirements does not guarantee that a particular setup can stream at a chosen resolution, frame rate and scene complexity. The workload and encoder matter. OBS encoding performance troubleshooting · OBS system requirements

Diagnose dropped frames and overload separately
Look at OBS’s statistics and status indicators before changing settings. The symptom points to different causes, so avoid treating every problem as a bitrate problem.

OBS’s dynamic bitrate option can reduce bitrate during congestion, but it does not fix the underlying connection problem and may lower picture quality. Copyright and YouTube channel considerations
Only send content you have the rights to stream, including music, video clips and other material in the scene. A stream key connects OBS to YouTube; it does not grant permission to use copyrighted content. Before building a long-running format around prerecorded material, review YouTube’s applicable copyright and channel monetization policies. Do not assume that technically successful streaming guarantees monetization or avoids a copyright claim.
