If YouTube Live shows “failed to connect to server — connection timed out” before your stream starts, first verify the current server URL, RTMPS protocol, stream key, and encoder support. If the stream starts but OBS later disconnects or reports dropped frames, investigate upload stability, OBS logs and performance, and the Windows-to-YouTube network path instead. There is no documented special timeout rule for overnight playlists; the long run makes a realistic rehearsal and a way to monitor stream health especially important.

First identify when the timeout happens

People often call any YouTube Live connection problem an “RTMP timeout,” but the failure may involve RTMPS configuration, the network, or the encoder. Separate a failure to connect at startup from a stream that begins successfully and drops later; the right fixes differ.

  • Before the stream starts: note the exact error. A connection timeout or SSL error points first to the URL, protocol, server, key, or encoder’s RTMPS support.
  • After it starts: note whether OBS reports dropped frames or disconnects and reconnects, and whether YouTube Studio shows incoming data, encoder errors, or a stream-health warning.
  • Keep evidence: save the OBS log and note the time of the failure and what YouTube’s Live Control Room showed. This helps distinguish a connection problem from an encoding or source problem.

Fix a startup “failed to connect to server — connection timed out” error

Verify the current YouTube server and protocol

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room for the stream.
  2. Open Stream settings and reveal or copy the current server URL and stream key. YouTube may show an ordinary RTMP URL by default; choose the RTMPS URL.
  3. In OBS, check the stream service/server settings and replace any saved URL with the current RTMPS server value from YouTube. Do not assume an older saved URL is still correct.
  4. Copy the stream key from the same Live Control Room stream into OBS. Avoid sharing it: anyone with access to the key could send a stream to your channel.
  5. Confirm that the encoder supports RTMPS. YouTube’s RTMPS guidance says both the protocol and server should be rtmps, not just rtmp.

If an SSL error persists after you have checked the URL and encoder support, YouTube suggests specifying port 443. Use the current YouTube endpoint and the encoder’s supported URL format rather than guessing at a different server address.

Update and inspect OBS

YouTube recommends using the latest encoder version. Update OBS, then check its preview, connection status, errors, CPU load, and log. If OBS cannot connect at all, changing playlist content or bitrate is unlikely to correct a wrong endpoint or unsupported protocol; resolve the connection configuration first.

Fix a stream that drops after it starts

Check dropped frames and stream health

OBS says intermittent disconnections and dropped frames usually indicate an unstable connection between the computer and the ingest server, or a bitrate higher than the connection can sustain. YouTube’s Live Control Room stream-health information and the OBS log can help show whether data is arriving and when trouble begins. Also inspect OBS CPU load and the local recording, if available, to distinguish encoder or source trouble from outbound network trouble.

Choose a bitrate for stable upload capacity

A speed test is a starting point, not a guarantee of an uninterrupted overnight stream. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate and using a representative preflight with similar audio and movement, then monitoring stream health. For H.264, YouTube’s published settings guidance lists these recommended bitrates and minimums:

TP-Link AC1200 WiFi Router Dual Band Wireless Internet Router (Archer A54)
  • Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
  • Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
  • Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
  • Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
Output Recommended bitrate Minimum bitrate
1080p at 30 fps 14 Mbps 5 Mbps
720p at 30 fps 8 Mbps 3 Mbps
480p at 30 fps 4 Mbps 0.4 Mbps

These are YouTube’s recommended configuration values, not measured reliability statistics or promises that a connection will stay stable overnight. Match the setting to your actual resolution and frame rate, and leave headroom for normal network variation. OBS suggests using 75% of total upload speed as a starting point for bitrate selection; that is an OBS rule of thumb, not a YouTube requirement or stability guarantee.

YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Check that the encoder’s keyframe interval meets that guidance alongside the resolution, frame rate, and bitrate.

Test OBS network settings one at a time

On Windows, OBS documents network options under Settings → Advanced → Network. Change one setting at a time and repeat a representative test so you can tell whether it helped.

  • Try enabling Network Optimizations and TCP pacing.
  • Set Bind to IP to Default.
  • You can test IPv4-only. If that does not help, return to the default IPv4 and IPv6 setting.
  • Dynamic bitrate can lower bitrate during congestion, but it does not fix the cause of congestion and may reduce image quality.

Check Wi-Fi, security software, drivers, and network hardware

  • If the PC is on Wi-Fi, try wired Ethernet; OBS notes that Wi-Fi can be unstable for streaming. A cable is only useful if the PC can connect to your router or network. It will not fix a wrong RTMPS URL or key, an ISP outage, or an encoder problem.
  • OBS lists VPNs, firewall or antivirus software, network “optimization” utilities, and outdated network drivers as possible causes. If you suspect security software, test it temporarily and cautiously; restore protection afterward and add an OBS exception only if the evidence supports it.
  • Restart the modem and router. Check for faulty cables, network cards, routers, switches, or extenders if the connection remains unstable.
  • If the outbound connection is still problematic after local checks, contact your ISP. YouTube and OBS both point users toward the ISP when the connection to the ingest server remains the issue.

Rehearse the overnight playlist before leaving it unattended

  1. Use the same Windows PC, OBS version, playlist, output settings, and network path you intend to use overnight.
  2. Run a representative test long enough to exercise the setup, including similar audio and movement. A short successful connection alone does not establish that a long run will stay connected.
  3. Watch YouTube Studio’s stream health and OBS’s connection status, dropped-frame information, errors, and CPU load during the test.
  4. In YouTube Studio, confirm the intended stream event settings and its auto-start and auto-stop behavior.
  5. Arrange a way to monitor or receive an alert while the stream is unattended. Neither the cited YouTube guidance nor OBS promises that one setting prevents every long-run disconnection.

The reviewed YouTube and OBS guidance does not establish a special timeout caused by an overnight playlist, nor does it specify an overnight-playlist timeout policy. Treat overnight operation as a reason to test the complete setup, not as proof that YouTube ends streams after a particular duration.
