Short answer: FFmpeg’s documented -reconnect options are for HTTP protocol operations; they are not a documented, general-purpose switch for reconnecting an RTMP or RTMPS publishing output to YouTube. A brief network outage may interrupt the live session, and neither FFmpeg nor YouTube documentation guarantees that viewers will see uninterrupted playback after recovery. Use RTMPS, leave upload headroom, monitor the encoder and YouTube’s stream health, and test a separate backup encoder if the event matters.
What an outage can—and cannot—be recovered from
There are several distinct failure points: the network connection can drop while FFmpeg keeps running; FFmpeg can exit; or the connection can return while YouTube does not resume the event as you expect. Treat these as separate cases. A still-running process does not prove that its publishing session has recovered, and restarting a process does not prove that YouTube or viewers have resumed on the original timeline.
The official documentation reviewed does not establish a universal YouTube reconnect grace period, guarantee that an existing live event survives an RTMP disconnect, or promise a continuous viewer timeline. Recovery time and viewer impact depend on the actual encoder, network, and event setup. Plan to detect and verify recovery rather than assume it.
Configure YouTube and FFmpeg for a resilient stream
Use the current server URL and protect the key
In YouTube Live Control Room, use the current server URL and stream key shown for the event. YouTube recommends RTMPS, its encrypted extension to RTMP. Reveal and copy the RTMPS URL from the stream settings when using that protocol; the regular RTMP URL may otherwise be displayed by default. Keep the key private: it functions like a password for the feed. Do not expose it in a public command, issue, screenshot, or shared log.

If YouTube reports an SSL error, check that the URL uses the intended RTMPS scheme and assigned host. Where appropriate for that endpoint, YouTube’s guidance is to use port 443. Do not substitute a different URL or port without confirming it matches the endpoint provided for the stream.
Choose encoder settings that fit the connection
YouTube’s published RTMP/RTMPS guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, constant bitrate (CBR), frame rates up to 60 fps, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Choose the bitrate for the codec, resolution, and frame rate rather than treating one figure as universal. For H.264, YouTube lists 14 Mbps as the recommended bitrate for 1080p at 30 fps and 8 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps. These are recommendations, not guarantees that a connection can sustain the stream.

Measure the available upload capacity under realistic conditions and keep the total streaming bitrate below it. YouTube recommends 20% upload headroom. If you send both a primary and backup stream, include both in the total; a second stream does not help if it overloads the same uplink.
Do not apply HTTP reconnect flags to an RTMP output
FFmpeg’s protocol documentation places options such as -reconnect, -reconnect_at_eof, -reconnect_on_network_error, -reconnect_streamed, and retry delays in its HTTP protocol section. They address HTTP transfers or inputs. Their presence in FFmpeg does not establish that they reconnect an RTMP/RTMPS publishing output. An option valid for an HTTP input may not apply to the output protocol.

Do not blindly add -reconnect 1 to an RTMP output command and assume it will restore publishing. Check the protocol-specific options supported by the FFmpeg build actually deployed, and test the complete path. The sources reviewed do not establish a universal RTMP output reconnect option or a tested watchdog command.
Build and test a recovery plan
For a supervised single FFmpeg process
- Keep the source and process available where possible. A short transport loss by itself does not prove that FFmpeg must be restarted. Check whether the process remains alive and whether the source is still producing valid audio and video.
- Watch both sides of the connection. Monitor FFmpeg logs and exit status, as well as stream health in YouTube Live Control Room. A running process alone is not confirmation that YouTube is receiving a healthy feed.
- Restart only when the observed state calls for it. If FFmpeg exits or remains disconnected, use a service manager, watchdog, or operator procedure to restart it. Then verify the YouTube preview and viewer playback; do not treat a successful process launch as proof of recovery.
- Test the source after a restart. With a file or capture device, check the actual deployment for timestamp behavior, audio/video synchronization, and content continuity. These details depend on the source and implementation.
This approach can bring an exited process back under supervision, but it does not remove shared risks such as the host, power, network link, or source. It also does not establish seamless playback.

For an important event: use an independently prepared backup encoder
YouTube recommends testing encoder failover. Prepare the backup path in advance, then test it by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable and confirming that the player rolls over to the backup. Verify this with the actual event configuration rather than relying on a successful startup test.
A backup encoder is only independent to the extent that its failure points are independent. A second encoder on the same host, power source, or uplink can still fail with the primary. Account for the backup stream’s bitrate when checking upload headroom, and observe what viewers see during the switch. YouTube’s failover guidance does not promise that a switch will be invisible or preserve one continuous session.

Test the outage you are trying to survive
- Run a private or otherwise appropriate end-to-end test using the intended encoder, event settings, and network.
- Simulate the relevant failure: interrupt the primary network connection, stop the encoder, or test the prepared backup as appropriate.
- Record whether FFmpeg stays alive, exits, or needs intervention; whether YouTube reports a healthy feed; and how the player behaves during and after recovery.
- Make sure an operator knows how to check the stream key and endpoint privately, inspect status, start the backup, and confirm the viewer-facing result.
YouTube warns that connectivity disruption can mean a broken stream and recommends testing and monitoring. A valid FFmpeg command is necessary, but it cannot by itself guarantee network continuity.

| Symptom | Likely issue to check | Practical response |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg is running, but YouTube shows no healthy incoming stream | The process may remain alive while its publishing connection is disconnected, or the endpoint/key may be wrong. | Check FFmpeg logs and YouTube stream health; verify the current server URL and key in Live Control Room. Restart under supervision if it remains disconnected, then confirm the preview. |
| An SSL error appears | The URL scheme or host may not match the RTMPS endpoint. | Copy the RTMPS URL shown in stream settings and verify the assigned host and, where applicable, port 443. |
| The stream drops when upload varies | The configured total bitrate may be too close to available upload capacity. | Reassess sustained upload under real conditions, reduce the bitrate if needed, and preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. |
| A reconnect flag has no effect on the output | The option may be an HTTP protocol option rather than an RTMP/RTMPS output control. | Check the option’s protocol scope and the capabilities of the deployed FFmpeg build; do not infer output recovery from HTTP input behavior. |
| The process restarts, but the stream still looks wrong | The source may restart at an unexpected position or with timing or synchronization changes. | Test file or capture behavior on the actual setup and inspect YouTube’s preview and viewer playback after restart. |
| A backup encoder also fails or overloads the connection | It may share the primary’s host, power, or network failure point, or the total bitrate may exceed available upload. | Test the failover path by deliberately stopping the primary or disconnecting its Ethernet cable, and budget bandwidth for both streams where both are sent. |
