Choose HTML2PDF.app when you want a hosted API to turn a publicly reachable page or supplied HTML into a PDF without operating the rendering browser. Choose Puppeteer when you need browser automation inside your own application and are prepared to manage its runtime. Neither is categorically faster or more faithful: test representative pages in the deployment path you plan to use.

What differs between HTML2PDF.app and Puppeteer?

HTML2PDF.app is a hosted conversion service. You send a request to its API and receive a PDF, either directly or through a callback workflow. Puppeteer is a browser automation library; you navigate a browser page and call Page.pdf() to create a PDF. That makes this a choice between delegating rendering to a service and owning the browser-based workflow yourself—not a direct comparison of two equivalent products.

Puppeteer generates PDFs using print CSS media by default. HTML2PDF.app also offers a hosted API with options for layout, media mode, and asynchronous processing. Which produces the better result depends on the page, its resources and scripts, and the configuration you use. The official documentation does not establish a universal output-fidelity or speed winner. Puppeteer Page.pdf API; HTML2PDF.app documentation.

When should you choose each one?

Choose HTML2PDF.app for a managed API workflow

  • Your application can submit a page URL or raw HTML to an external API.
  • You prefer not to package, run, scale, and update the rendering browser yourself.
  • A synchronous PDF response or a callback for background work fits your job flow.
  • Your source page is publicly accessible as required by the service documentation.

Choose Puppeteer for browser-level control

  • You already use Puppeteer or need browser automation as part of a broader workflow.
  • You want to invoke PDF generation on a browser page under your application’s control.
  • You can own browser runtime packaging, concurrency, retries, scaling, and upgrades.

Pause if the source page is sensitive

With a hosted API, page content is sent to a third-party renderer. Review the provider’s data-handling terms and your own security requirements before sending sensitive pages. Puppeteer may keep rendering within infrastructure you control, but that also means you take responsibility for operating it. The consulted documentation does not quantify the workload or cost of either choice for a particular deployment.

Fonts, images, and JavaScript affect both

A PDF can differ from the page a developer sees in a normal browser if fonts or other resources are unavailable, or if JavaScript has not completed before capture. HTML2PDF.app specifically advises testing representative documents because media mode, resource availability, and script timing can affect output. Puppeteer’s API specifies print CSS by default; if you need screen styling, emulate screen media before calling page.pdf().

Check color behavior

Puppeteer notes that printing modifies colors by default. Its API documentation points to -webkit-print-color-adjust for exact colors. Validate the actual printed colors and page breaks rather than assuming screen appearance carries over unchanged. Puppeteer Page.pdf API.

How to call the HTML2PDF.app API

HTML2PDF.app documents an authenticated POST request to https://api.html2pdf.app/v1/generate with the API key in an X-API-Key header. A successful synchronous response contains PDF bytes. Keep the key in trusted server-side code; do not expose it in browser JavaScript or a public repository.

curl -X POST "https://api.html2pdf.app/v1/generate"
  -H "X-API-Key: YOUR_API_KEY"
  -H "Content-Type: application/json"
  -d '{"url":"https://example.com"}'
  -o page.pdf

Use the request fields and options documented by HTML2PDF.app for your intended source and layout. The example shows the endpoint and authentication pattern; check the current documentation for the exact request schema before integrating. HTML2PDF.app documentation.

Use a callback for background generation

For an asynchronous workflow, the service documentation describes passing callBackUrl so the completed document is delivered to your callback. Design the receiving endpoint to validate the callback, handle retries, and associate the result with the job that initiated it. The documentation notes callback retries and HTTP errors; implement failure handling according to its current guidance.

How to generate a PDF with Puppeteer

In a Node.js application where Puppeteer and its browser runtime are installed, navigate to the target page and call page.pdf(). This example writes a PDF file using the default print-media behavior.

const puppeteer = require('puppeteer');

(async () => {
  const browser = await puppeteer.launch();
  try {
    const page = await browser.newPage();
    await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle0' });
    await page.pdf({ path: 'page.pdf', format: 'A4', printBackground: true });
  } finally {
    await browser.close();
  }
})();

For screen CSS rather than print CSS, set the media type before PDF generation:

await page.emulateMediaType('screen');
await page.pdf({ path: 'page.pdf', format: 'A4', printBackground: true });

Use the options supported by the Puppeteer version you deploy; the API reference documents Page.pdf(options) and its behavior. Puppeteer Page.pdf API.

Estimate cost and operational effort

HTML2PDF.app published monthly plans

The vendor’s home page lists the following plans and credit allowances; confirm current terms directly before purchasing, since prices and allowances can change. Its page says each 5 MB chunk of generated output costs one credit.

Plan Published monthly price Credits per month Other published limit
Free $0 100 Up to 1 MB per file
Startup $9 1,000 Parallel-conversion allowance differs by tier; see vendor page
Standard $25 5,000 Parallel-conversion allowance differs by tier; see vendor page
Scale $39 10,000 Parallel-conversion allowance differs by tier; see vendor page

These are the vendor-published monthly prices and limits reported for 2026, not an independently verified quotation. The same page advertises 1.7M+ conversions per month, 1.5K+ developers, 1.8-second average processing time, and 99.9% uptime. Those are vendor claims; the page does not establish an independent measurement method or a comparison with Puppeteer. HTML2PDF.app plans and claims.

Model your own Puppeteer cost

Puppeteer’s all-in cost depends on where and how you run it, including browser compute, concurrency, engineering time, and ongoing maintenance. The consulted sources do not establish a fair all-in cost comparison with HTML2PDF.app. Estimate your expected document volume and test the workload in the infrastructure you would actually deploy.

Test a representative production document

  1. Choose pages that reflect your real content: long documents, pages with custom fonts and images, and any pages whose JavaScript changes the final layout.
  2. Decide whether the PDF should reflect print or screen styling, then set that mode explicitly where needed.
  3. Check page size, orientation, margins, scale, headers and footers, page breaks, colors, and whether expected images and fonts appear.
  4. Test the actual generation path, including service callbacks or your Puppeteer deployment, rather than comparing only local previews.
  5. Record PDF output size and generation behavior for your workload. For HTML2PDF.app, include its 5 MB-per-credit billing rule and file limits in the estimate.

Troubleshooting common PDF problems

The PDF uses the wrong CSS layout

Puppeteer uses print media by default. If the page should use screen styling, call page.emulateMediaType('screen') before page.pdf(). For HTML2PDF.app, verify the media option and test the same page in that mode.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fonts or images are missing

Check that resources are available to the renderer and have loaded before the PDF is created. HTML2PDF.app identifies fonts and other resources as factors that can affect output. For Puppeteer, wait for the page state your application requires and verify that referenced resources are reachable from the browser runtime.

Dynamic content is incomplete

The page may still be changing when capture begins. HTML2PDF.app documents a waitFor delay of up to 10 seconds; use it when a fixed wait is appropriate, while recognizing that a delay alone does not prove the page is ready. With Puppeteer, select a navigation or readiness condition that matches the page rather than relying on an arbitrary pause.

Colors or backgrounds differ

For Puppeteer, printing may modify colors; check the print styles and the API guidance on -webkit-print-color-adjust. Also confirm background printing is enabled where your chosen options require it. For either approach, inspect the produced PDF, not just the browser view.
