A stream that stalls or drops frames does not, by itself, prove that packets are being lost between your Linux VPS and YouTube. Diagnose it by confirming the ingest configuration, recording what happens at the time of the symptom, and comparing encoder and YouTube observations with host counters and repeated network tests. If a relay is involved, investigate each publishing leg separately.
First, identify what failed and where
Write down the UTC time and the specific symptom. An initial connection failure, dropped frames after connection, a stalled output, a reconnect, and a YouTube Live Control Room health warning are different observations; they do not establish the same cause.
Map the publishing path before testing:
- Direct: the encoder on the VPS publishes straight to YouTube.
- Relayed: an encoder publishes to an RTMP relay, which then publishes to YouTube. Treat encoder-to-relay and relay-to-YouTube as separate paths.
Note which process runs on the VPS, the ingest hostname and protocol, and whether the problem affects the incoming or outgoing leg. Keep the stream key private; do not include it in logs or screenshots shared for troubleshooting.
Verify the YouTube ingest URL and RTMPS setup
Use the current ingest URL provided for the live stream rather than a hostname or path saved from an earlier setup. YouTube’s RTMPS guidance specifies the rtmps protocol, a valid YouTube ingest endpoint and application path, TLS over port 443, and the server hostname sent through SNI for TLS authentication. If the connection fails during setup or TLS negotiation, verify the URL, port, TLS configuration, and SNI before diagnosing intermittent packet loss. Do not use cleartext RTMP to an RTMPS endpoint; YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance associates SSL errors with server, port, TLS, or SNI configuration.
Capture evidence during the next incident
One-off measurements taken hours away from a stream problem cannot show what happened during it. Prepare to record a baseline before the event, observations during it, and recovery afterward, with clocks and timestamps aligned as closely as possible.

- Encoder: record its own dropped-frame, network, connection, and reconnect indicators.
- YouTube: note the Live Control Room health observation and its timestamp.
- VPS: capture interface statistics and relevant Linux network-stack counters before and during the symptom so you can compare changes.
- Network path: repeat ping or MTR observations to relevant testable hosts while the problem is occurring.
- Relay, if present: record receive-side and publish-side observations independently.
Correlated evidence is more useful than a single average throughput result. A counter that has a nonzero lifetime total, or an MTR run that shows an isolated intermediate-hop anomaly, is not enough on its own to attribute the stream symptom to packet loss.
Check whether the VPS is dropping packets locally
Linux packet drops can happen at more than one layer, including interface rings, kernel networking, and socket or application buffers. Red Hat’s RHEL 10 network troubleshooting and performance tuning documentation discusses these layers, including RX/TX ring buffers and UDP socket-drop counters.

Inspect available interface and protocol statistics, then compare readings from before, during, and after the symptom. Look for counters that increase at the incident time, not merely counters that are nonzero. If they rise with the stream problem, investigate host processing, virtual NIC or provider counters, and workload contention before changing kernel tuning.
Do not change ring-buffer settings as a first response: Red Hat notes that changing ring settings can briefly interrupt connectivity on some drivers. The same documentation notes that iperf3 utility results may differ from application behavior under a production workload.

Use ping and MTR as path clues, not verdicts
Ping provides basic latency and response observations. MTR combines route and latency reporting over repeated probes. Run them against relevant hostnames or IP addresses you can test, and repeat during the incident if possible. These probes do not necessarily use the same application protocol or path behavior as the stream.
An intermediate router may rate-limit or deprioritize probe replies while still forwarding traffic. Therefore, loss shown at one intermediate hop does not establish end-to-end loss. If later hops and the application remain healthy, do not label that intermediate display as proof that the router is dropping forwarded stream packets. Top.host gives Linux examples such as mtr --report-cycles=20 IPADDRESS in its packet-loss measurement guide; its first-hop heuristic is not universal proof of forwarding loss.

Use iperf3 only for the path it tests
iperf3 measures between its test endpoints. Unless YouTube provides the test endpoint, an iperf3 run does not measure the path to YouTube’s ingest service. It can help assess a controlled path between endpoints you operate, but a result from another provider, region, or destination does not prove the YouTube route is healthy or unhealthy.
Microsoft’s Linux VM troubleshooting guide demonstrates starting a server with iperf3 -s and running a client against it; see the Linux performance bottlenecks guide. Red Hat cautions that utility results can differ from application performance because of factors such as application buffer sizes. For UDP checks, choose a bitrate and payload size deliberately and begin at a workload-relevant rate rather than immediately pushing the path or receiver beyond capacity. UDP testing also uses TCP control and UDP data sockets.
Interpret the evidence by pattern
- Host counters rise with the symptom: investigate local interface, kernel, virtual NIC/provider counters, and workload contention. Correlation narrows the search but does not alone identify the exact cause.
- Nearby controlled tests are stable but YouTube-bound streaming still fails: the paths differ, so this neither clears nor implicates YouTube. Preserve timestamps and route/ingest observations and ask the VPS provider to investigate egress or routing.
- Only intermediate MTR hops show loss: do not call it end-to-end loss if later hops and the application remain healthy.
- RTMPS setup or negotiation fails: fix the URL, port, TLS, or SNI configuration before interpreting the issue as intermittent packet loss.
- A relay is used: test both publishing legs independently; success from encoder to relay does not verify relay to YouTube.
