Short answer: YouTube Studio schedules the event, but it does not send videos from your NAS. To livestream a NAS playlist, keep the files on the NAS and use an encoder on a computer—or supported NAS software—to send the video and audio to YouTube using the event’s stream URL and key. The encoder must be running and able to reach the files when the stream is due to start.

What you need to make the playlist a livestream

There are two separate parts: the scheduled YouTube event, which creates the watch page and start time, and the encoder, which sends the playlist’s audio and video. Creating an event alone does not make YouTube read a folder or playlist from your NAS.

  • A YouTube channel eligible to livestream. YouTube’s current eligibility guidance says the channel must be verified, have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and the streamer must be at least 16. Check your account in Studio because requirements can change. YouTube live streaming requirements.
  • Video files accessible to the encoder, either through a mounted NAS share or another supported network path.
  • An encoder that can play the files in the required order and send a live feed. A computer running an encoder is the straightforward local arrangement; software and NAS support vary.
  • A reliable upload connection and the event’s stream URL and key from YouTube Live Control Room.

A NAS media-player playlist is not, by itself, a YouTube Live encoder. For example, Synology’s DSM 7.2 Video Station documentation covers managing and playing NAS media, and notes that Video Station is unavailable in DSM 7.2.2; QNAP Video Station documents playlists for media-device playback. Neither cited page establishes a direct media-folder-to-YouTube-Live workflow. Check current documentation for your exact NAS model and software before relying on it. Synology Video Station specifications; QNAP Video Station tutorial.

Choose where the encoder will run

Approach Best suited to Trade-off Verify before relying on it
Computer runs the encoder; NAS stores the files Local control, existing hardware, scenes or overlays The computer, NAS access and network must remain available Share permissions, supported media formats, playlist order and repeat behavior, scheduled start and recovery
NAS runs encoder software People whose specific NAS supports the required software Model, CPU, package or container support, and transcoding capability differ Current model documentation, codecs, unattended process supervision and upload capacity
Cloud prerecorded-stream service People who do not want a home encoder to stay on Media is uploaded to an external service; controls, limits, availability and terms vary Playlist limits, schedule controls, YouTube integration, storage and pricing
YouTube Premiere A prerecorded video that does not need a live encoder feed It is a different format and audience experience from a livestream Whether a live feed and its associated live behavior are actually needed

For a locally controlled setup, use a computer on the same network as the NAS and make the media folder available to the encoder. OBS may suit a production that needs scenes and operator controls; a file-oriented encoder such as FFmpeg may suit a repeatable file pipeline. The exact playlist command, loop behavior and scheduling depend on the software and configuration, so test them rather than assuming a universal NAS feature.

Create and schedule the YouTube event

  1. In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go Live.
  2. Open Manage > Schedule Stream in Live Control Room and create the event. Add its title, visibility and scheduled time as appropriate for your channel.
  3. Open the event’s stream settings and copy the stream URL and stream key into the encoder’s YouTube destination settings. Treat the key as sensitive: YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Do not publish it or put it in a public script or repository. Manage live stream settings.
  4. Choose the connection type supported by your encoder. YouTube recommends RTMPS, its encrypted RTMP option; reveal the RTMPS URL in Live Control Room and use it with the key in the encoder. YouTube RTMPS instructions.
  5. Start the encoder with the intended NAS playlist. Confirm that YouTube receives the feed and shows it in the Live Control Room preview. In the documented scheduled-event flow, click Go live when the preview is ready.

YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop settings can automate aspects of starting or ending an event, but they do not replace an encoder sending content. YouTube stream settings. HLS is an alternative only for supported encoder and codec setups; it has specific segment and playlist requirements and higher latency, so do not apply its requirements to an ordinary RTMPS workflow. YouTube HLS instructions.

Make the NAS playlist dependable

Before scheduling a public event, confirm that your chosen encoder can access and play the NAS files as intended. The exact controls depend on the encoder, NAS, media formats and operating system, so there is no universal set of OBS or FFmpeg playlist settings to copy.

  • Mount or connect the NAS share using an account with permission to read every file. Confirm the share remains available after the host restarts or the user signs out.
  • Check that the encoder can decode the files’ video and audio formats. If it cannot, choose compatible media or configure a supported conversion workflow; do not assume the NAS player’s compatibility means the encoder can play the same file.
  • Set and verify playlist order. Decide whether playback should repeat indefinitely or end after the last item; test the actual behavior in your encoder.
  • Keep the host awake, prevent scheduled restarts or sleep from interrupting playback, and ensure the network connection can sustain the outgoing stream while the NAS serves the media.
  • Test what happens if the NAS share disappears, the encoder closes, or the network drops. Recovery and automatic restart behavior depend on the software and process supervision you choose.

If your encoder or platform supports overlays or scenes, check that they do not obscure important video content and that the audio remains present throughout the playlist. For a simple file loop, a minimal production can reduce moving parts, but it still needs a tested start, repeat and recovery behavior.

Test the scheduled handoff before relying on it

YouTube recommends setting up the encoder at least two hours before an event and starting it at least 15 minutes beforehand. These are YouTube’s operational recommendations, not guarantees of performance. Its streaming tips also advise checking the preview, event accessibility, mobile playback, local archives and audio/video quality. YouTube streaming tips.

Copyright, reused content and live access

Only stream material you have the rights to use on YouTube, including music, video and any third-party clips in the playlist. A recording being stored on your NAS—or being available for playback in a NAS app—does not establish permission to broadcast it. Review the rights for the full playlist and any background audio before scheduling.

Reusing recordings in a livestream can also affect how viewers and YouTube evaluate the channel’s originality and monetization eligibility. Do not assume that looping or scheduling prerecorded material makes it original content or guarantees monetization. Check YouTube’s current policies and account notices for your channel before building a recurring stream around reused material.

When to use a cloud service instead

If you want scheduled prerecorded playback but do not want to maintain an always-on home encoder, evaluate a cloud prerecorded-stream service. One vendor describes a workflow of uploading a video or playlist, connecting YouTube and scheduling the stream; that is the vendor’s description, so verify the controls and terms that matter to your use case. Upstream guide to scheduling prerecorded YouTube Live videos.

Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for uploaded videos: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It does not stream from a camera. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on; it streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. Each slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB of storage per slot pooled across active slots, looping and playlists, automatic recovery and StreamNeo team support. See StreamNeo and pricing for current plan details. Start your free first day on StreamNeo.

Common problems and fixes

Symptom Likely cause What to check
YouTube event is scheduled, but no video appears The event exists, but the encoder is not sending a feed, or its destination details are wrong Start the encoder; confirm the stream URL, key and connection type match the event; inspect Live Control Room preview
The encoder cannot find a playlist file The NAS share is not mounted, permissions changed, or the encoder uses a different path Open the file from the host account running the encoder; check share credentials, mount path and restart behavior
Some items fail or play without sound The encoder may not support a file’s codec or audio format Test files individually, inspect their media formats, and use a format or conversion workflow supported by the encoder
The playlist stops unexpectedly The playlist may be configured to end, a file may fail, or the host, NAS or network may have disconnected Test end-of-playlist behavior; review encoder logs; verify NAS availability and host power/network settings
The stream does not start at the scheduled time Scheduling the YouTube event did not start the encoder, or the scheduled event was not taken live Confirm the encoder’s own start plan; check preview and the scheduled-event handoff in Live Control Room
The stream key no longer works The key may have been replaced, copied incorrectly or entered for a different event Copy the active key from the correct Live Control Room event and update the encoder securely
Playback buffers or loses quality The outgoing connection may be unstable or the host may be unable to serve the NAS media and upload simultaneously Check upload stability, NAS and host load, and encoder status; test at the intended operating conditions

Costs and practical trade-offs

A local setup may use hardware and network service you already have, but the host must remain available and someone must configure and monitor the encoder. If you lack a suitable always-on computer, factor in the cost of acquiring and running one; a particular NAS model or accessory is not universally required. A cloud option trades local upkeep for uploading media and depending on an external provider, so check its storage, schedule, recovery, pricing and service terms before choosing it. YouTube’s scheduling feature creates the event; it does not remove the need for an encoder or another service to supply the feed.
