A router reboot breaks the network path between your streaming encoder and YouTube. To reduce downtime, restore internet access, check the encoder’s connection, and confirm the live event in YouTube Studio; if needed, restart the encoder’s connection and verify that YouTube is receiving the feed. No setting can guarantee that every broadcast will resume seamlessly after every reboot.

What a router reboot does to a YouTube live stream

An encoder sends video to YouTube using a stream URL and stream key. Those settings tell the encoder where and how to connect; they do not keep the connection alive while the network is unavailable. When the router reboots, the encoder may lose its route to YouTube, and the broadcast can be interrupted. YouTube’s encoder guide explains the connection workflow.

Once the router is back, the public event’s state still matters. A computer with internet access does not by itself prove that OBS has reconnected or that the YouTube event is live. Check both ends.

Recover the stream after the router comes back

  1. Wait for the router to finish restarting. Give it time to restore its internet connection and reconnect the streaming computer. If possible, use Ethernet between the encoder computer and router: OBS recommends a wired connection for streaming and lists unstable networks and modem/router hardware among possible causes of disconnections. See OBS’s stream connection troubleshooting guide.
  2. Confirm internet access on the encoder computer. Open a website or otherwise verify that the computer—not only a phone on a different connection—can reach the internet.
  3. Inspect OBS. Check its connection status and logs. If OBS has not reconnected, use its reconnect or start-stream workflow. The exact labels and behavior can vary by OBS version and configuration.
  4. Check YouTube Live Control Room. Open the relevant live event and check whether it is live, waiting for data, or ended. YouTube’s live stream settings guidance describes managing stream settings and connecting an encoder.
  5. Verify incoming video. Confirm that YouTube is receiving the encoder feed and that the event is active before assuming the public stream has recovered.

Do not reset the stream key just because the router rebooted. YouTube describes resetting a key for key-specific problems; it is not a routine fix for a temporary network interruption. If you do have evidence of a key problem, review the event’s settings before changing it.

Will OBS reconnect when the internet returns?

It may reconnect, but you should not treat that as guaranteed. Recovery depends on the encoder’s behavior, the router and ISP connection, and the state of the YouTube event. YouTube and OBS document setup and troubleshooting; neither promises that every 24/7 broadcast will automatically resume after every router reboot.

For an unattended stream, test the actual setup during a planned maintenance window. Note how long the router takes to return, whether the encoder reconnects, and whether the same YouTube event remains active or must be restarted. This is a practical way to discover your system’s behavior, not a promised recovery-time target.

Choose a fix for the failure you actually have

A router reboot can be part of a local Wi-Fi problem, a WAN/ISP interruption, a power issue, or a router fault. Measures that cover one failure may do nothing for another. Compare them by the failure they address, whether the backup path is independent, how quickly it is detected, and whether the encoder and YouTube session recover.

Option Can help with Does not establish
Ethernet from encoder computer to router Local Wi-Fi instability; OBS recommends wired networking for streaming. OBS guidance. Preventing a router reboot or fixing an ISP-side outage.
Dual-WAN failover Loss of a primary WAN when a supported router is configured with a secondary connection and detects the failure. ASUS describes detection and failover for supported configurations in its Dual WAN guidance; model and firmware support vary. Continuity through a reboot of the router performing the failover.
Cloud fallback video Giving viewers fallback content during an encoder disconnect if the service supports and has configured that feature. Restream says disconnect protection is limited to certain plans; terms can change. See Restream’s setup instructions. Restoring the local router or the encoder’s originating connection.
RTMPS Encrypting the encoder-to-YouTube connection with TLS/SSL. See YouTube’s RTMPS instructions. Preventing network downtime; encryption is not a failover mechanism.
Router battery backup or UPS Potentially relevant if loss of power caused the reboot and the router and required network equipment are actually powered by the backup. Preventing a deliberate or software reboot, an ISP outage, or a router failure. The cause and a suitable model cannot be determined without details of the setup.

None of these options, on its own, establishes zero downtime. A backup WAN, for example, is useful only if its connection and detection work in the specific configuration—and it does not prove that a rebooting router will remain available to switch paths.

Keep a 24/7 stream from depending on the home router

If your stream consists of prerecorded video and the goal is to keep it live while your local computer or connection is unavailable, a cloud streaming service is a different approach from repairing the router. YouTube’s encoder guide covers cloud services for 24/7 prerecorded streaming. This does not restore your home router; it moves stream origination to a cloud service.

Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for uploaded videos: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Each slot includes 24/7 looping and playlists, 10 GB of storage per slot pooled across active slots, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and support from the StreamNeo team. Videos stream as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, with one flat price per slot rather than quality tiers. The first day is free with no card; it is one free day per account. Plans are available by the day, week, month, six months, or year, and can be cancelled at any time. UPI and cards are accepted in India; card checkout is available worldwide. For five or more slots, contact support.

The monthly option is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting from a camera, and it does not prevent interruptions to a separate local OBS stream. To try it, start your free first day.

Prevent avoidable repeat interruptions

  • Use Ethernet for the encoder where practical, so Wi-Fi instability is less likely to be the weak link.
  • Before relying on a backup WAN, confirm that the router model and firmware support the configuration and that the secondary connection is available.
  • Test router and encoder recovery in a planned window, then record which steps were needed to restore the YouTube event.
  • For a prerecorded stream that must continue independently of the home setup, consider cloud origination rather than assuming a local router or encoder will recover without intervention.
