Buffering, stuttering, or a drop in YouTube playback quality on Vodafone Idea (Vi) does not by itself prove packet loss—or that Vi is responsible. Compare the same video on another connection, check whether other services also stall on Vi, then work through the app, phone, and network checks below. Those comparisons can narrow down the likely cause without mistaking a speed test or a single ping result for proof.
First, record what is happening
Before changing settings, note the conditions so you can compare results and give useful details to Vi if you need support.
- Date, time, and approximate location.
- Phone make and model, operating system, and whether you use the YouTube app or a browser.
- Cellular network mode and the signal indication shown by the phone.
- The selected playback quality, and whether the video is live or on demand.
- Whether other apps or websites stall on Vi at the same time.
- Whether the problem repeats at another time or location.
Use comparisons to isolate the likely cause
Replay the same video over Wi-Fi or another available internet connection. Then, while on Vi, check whether non-YouTube apps and websites also stall. YouTube recommends trying a different internet connection when videos buffer (YouTube streaming and video troubleshooting).

These are diagnostic clues, not definitive tests. A site-specific route or YouTube delivery issue can complicate the pattern. Even if multiple services work on Wi-Fi but not on Vi, the comparison does not identify where a fault lies or prove packet loss.

Try a lower playback quality
In YouTube’s playback-quality menu, select a lower resolution and see whether playback steadies. YouTube publishes these approximate sustained-speed guidelines for common resolutions (YouTube video error troubleshooting):

These are approximate guidance figures, not a packet-loss threshold, a guarantee of smooth playback, or a measure of Vi’s performance. A speed test is a snapshot of throughput at that moment; it cannot establish that a stream has a stable connection over time.

Check the YouTube app, browser, and phone
- Close and reopen YouTube, or reload the video in your browser. Try another video to see whether the issue is limited to one item.
- Check for an available YouTube app or browser update, then restart the phone.
- On Android, if the problem persists, consider clearing YouTube’s cache through the phone’s system settings. Menu names vary by device and Android version.
- Confirm mobile data is enabled for YouTube in the phone’s app settings. Inspect DNS settings only if you have a reason to think they were changed.
These checks can resolve app or device issues; none of them, by itself, confirms or rules out a Vi network fault. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance also covers connection and playback checks (YouTube streaming and video troubleshooting; YouTube video error troubleshooting).
Refresh the Vi connection and check for a local issue
- Briefly toggle airplane mode off and on, or restart the mobile connection, then try playback again.
- Check that your account has data available and note whether the problem is limited to one location or time.
- Consult Vi’s data and calling troubleshooting guidance. Vi says customers can check speed through its app and lists chat, email, and store support routes; use the current contact options on its site.
- If you contact support, ask whether there is an incident or local network issue. Share your observations rather than assuming the cause or expecting a particular repair.
Change APN settings only if there is a reason
Do not start by editing the access point name (APN). If cellular data configuration appears incorrect, check the current Vi and device instructions first. Vi’s APN FAQ lists “www” for Android and “iphone” for iPhone, but menu paths and device instructions may not match every current operating-system version. Treat those values as a carrier reference to verify for your device, not as a universal fix for buffering.

Send Vi useful evidence if the problem continues
Give support the details you recorded: approximate location (not a publicly posted full address), timestamps, phone and app details, network mode, selected playback quality, what happened on other services, and whether another connection worked. If you have repeatable speed or packet-loss measurements, include the test method and results.
Ping and traceroute results can be affected by routing and by network handling of ICMP traffic. A single result is not conclusive evidence about the path used by YouTube video traffic. Vi’s mobile internet speed guidance discusses general steps such as resetting network settings. Treat that as a later option: resetting can remove saved settings, so back up Wi-Fi passwords and VPN settings and review the phone’s reset prompt before proceeding.
