If your YouTube stream key seems to have vanished from OBS, first select the Profile you used for YouTube. Then open Settings > Stream to check whether OBS uses a stream key or an account sign-in. For key-based streaming, copy the key from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and enter it in OBS; reset it only if you need a new key. The timing may coincide with an update, but that alone does not establish that the update caused the change.
1. Check the active OBS Profile
OBS Profiles save most settings related to output, including stream settings and a connected account. If OBS opens with a different Profile than the one you used for YouTube, its Stream page may show different connection settings.
- In OBS, open the Profile menu at the top of the window.
- Select the Profile you previously used to stream to YouTube.
- Open Settings > Stream and check the connection details.
If you have a backup Profile export, use Profile > Import/Export to import its settings. Profiles do not include Scenes; those are handled separately through Scene Collections. See the OBS Project’s Profiles documentation.
2. Find out whether OBS uses a key or account sign-in
In OBS, open Settings > Stream. Check the selected service and the connection method shown there. OBS supports selecting a service and entering a server and key, while some setups connect by signing in to an account. If OBS is signed in to YouTube, an empty or unavailable Stream Key field does not necessarily mean a key was deleted; you may be using the account connection instead.

For account sign-in compatibility problems, YouTube’s encoder troubleshooting guidance directs users to the streaming software provider.
3. Restore a key-based YouTube connection
Copy the existing key from YouTube Studio
- In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go Live to open the Live Control Room.
- Select Stream and locate Stream key.
- Copy the key, then return to OBS and open Settings > Stream.
- Choose YouTube as the service if needed, then paste the key into the Stream Key field and save the settings.
YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Treat the key as a credential: do not publish it or share it with anyone who should not be able to send a feed to your channel. Reset the key only if you need a new one
If the existing key is unavailable or you have a reason to replace it, use Reset beside the hidden key in Live Control Room. Copy the newly generated key and replace the old value in OBS. Resetting changes the credential, so update OBS before trying to stream with it. YouTube says only a channel owner or manager can reset a key; editors and viewers do not have that permission.
4. Test the connection before going live
Confirm that OBS has the intended YouTube service and connection method, then start a test stream or preview when practical. Check that the encoder feed appears in the Live Control Room preview before starting the event. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions describe connecting the encoder and checking the preview before going live.

5. Troubleshoot what is still missing
- The Stream page looks unfamiliar: Check the active Profile against the one you used for YouTube. A different Profile can have different stream settings.
- There is no key field: Check whether OBS is connected by account sign-in instead of a manually entered key. Do not reset a key just because that field is absent.
- The old key is rejected: Return to Live Control Room, copy the current key, and paste it into OBS. If you reset the key, make sure OBS has the new one rather than the previous value.
- You cannot reset the key: Check your YouTube channel permissions. YouTube requires the channel owner or a manager to reset it.
- You use account sign-in and cannot connect: Follow the sign-in troubleshooting route for your streaming software; YouTube refers compatibility issues to the software provider.
