Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →A shared VPS may be short of stable outbound bandwidth when your YouTube stream drops, but a disconnect alone does not prove contention. Compare network-dropped-frame logs and failure timestamps with the stream’s total bitrate and the VPS’s sustained outbound capacity during the same periods. YouTube recommends keeping 20% headroom; a brief peak speed test cannot show whether that capacity was available when the stream failed.
What bandwidth contention can—and cannot—tell you
YouTube needs the connection to its ingest server to sustain the stream’s combined video and audio bitrate. YouTube also warns that sharing a network can limit the bandwidth available to an individual connection. That makes VPS network contention a plausible cause, not a diagnosis: a weak route, an encoder problem, or another network issue can produce similar symptoms. YouTube’s network guidance and OBS’s troubleshooting guide describe the relevant limits and symptoms.
The useful question is not whether the VPS once reached a high upload speed. It is whether stable outbound capacity available to this stream was sufficient at the times it dropped. Compare that capacity with the configured video bitrate plus audio bitrate, and leave room for variation. YouTube recommends 20% headroom.
Diagnose the disconnect in order
1. Identify whether frames were lost to the network
In OBS, inspect the Statistics window and logs around each failure. Record the exact time and distinguish network-dropped frames from rendering lag or encoder overload. Network drops point toward the path between the encoder and the ingest server; they do not establish whether the VPS host, network route, or another component is responsible. OBS notes that excessive dropped frames can lead to disconnection. If the encoder reports rendering or encoding lag instead, investigate those issues rather than treating them as proof of bandwidth contention.

2. Write down the stream settings
Record the codec, resolution, frame rate, video bitrate, audio bitrate, and whether the bitrate is constant or dynamically adjusted. Compare the total bitrate with available upload capacity—not download speed. YouTube’s current encoder guidance gives these recommended H.264 video bitrates:
| Resolution and frame rate | YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p30 or 720p60 | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps |
| 1440p30 | 21 Mbps |
| 1440p60 | 34 Mbps |
| 2160p30 | 42 Mbps |
| 2160p60 | 50 Mbps |
These are YouTube recommendations for H.264, not measured requirements for every video or a guarantee that a VPS can sustain the rate. The YouTube encoder settings page provides separate recommendations for other codecs. Add the audio bitrate when comparing total stream demand with capacity.

3. Measure outbound capacity while the stream runs
Observe the VPS’s outbound throughput and stability while the stream is active, especially during the periods when failures usually happen. Compare that evidence with the configured total bitrate and the headroom target. A speed test taken once, or a peak result that does not cover the failure interval, cannot establish sustained capacity at the time of a disconnect. YouTube’s advice is upload-specific, and OBS describes connection stability—not a single speed reading—as central to troubleshooting.
Keep the measurements time-aligned: note when throughput falls or fluctuates, when OBS records network drops, and when YouTube reports a stream-health problem. If the VPS provider exposes network caps or instance-level usage, record those too.

4. Run a controlled lower-bitrate test
- Keep the destination, codec, and other settings steady where practical.
- Lower the video bitrate enough to create clear headroom below the outbound capacity you observe. Include audio bitrate in the total.
- Test with representative audio and movement, not a static or silent scene. YouTube recommends testing with representative content and monitoring stream health and status messages.
- Record the test period, bitrate, throughput, OBS statistics, and YouTube stream-health messages. Compare the results with the failure periods.
If network drops stop at a lower bitrate, that supports a capacity or stability hypothesis. It does not, by itself, prove that the shared VPS host was congested; a route or other network condition may also have changed.
5. Treat dynamic bitrate as a mitigation
OBS can reduce bitrate when the connection cannot keep up. That may help a stream continue, but image quality can fall, and OBS explicitly cautions that dynamic bitrate does not resolve the underlying connection problem. Use it as a continuity measure or diagnostic aid, not as proof that the host’s network is healthy.

Rule out other causes before blaming the VPS
- Encoder or rendering load: If OBS shows rendering lag or encoding overload rather than network-dropped frames, investigate system resources and encoder settings.
- Route and network interference: OBS lists VPNs, security software, network-optimization software, outdated network drivers, and faulty network components among possible causes. On a VPS, check only the items relevant to its operating system and network setup; desktop-specific checks such as Wi-Fi may not apply.
- Ingest or stream health: Review YouTube’s stream-health status and messages at the failure time. A disconnect symptom by itself does not identify which part of the connection failed.
- Host-side resource or network limits: Check whether the VPS plan has a bandwidth cap, traffic allowance, or shared-network policy. The available documentation does not establish that any particular provider is oversubscribed.
For broader cloud-streaming troubleshooting, Huawei Cloud’s live-stream guide separates stream-side, playback-side, and origin/CDN causes and recommends checking bandwidth and server resource use. It is general cloud guidance, not YouTube-specific authority.

Ask whether the plan has a bandwidth cap or shared network resources and whether the provider can check congestion or other host-side network events at those times. If measurements point to the host, compare alternatives on sustained outbound throughput, stated caps and traffic allowances, shared versus dedicated network terms, route stability to YouTube ingest, region, access to technical support, and cost. A “dedicated” label alone does not establish that a stream will remain uninterrupted.
