A stream stopping on an AWS Mumbai EC2 instance does not, by itself, prove that Mumbai or AWS is at fault. To find the cause, correlate timestamped FFmpeg errors, YouTube Live Control Room health messages, encoder and source health, and EC2 network observations. Start by preserving those clues; change bitrate, protocol, or instance size only when the evidence points to it.
1. Capture evidence before changing anything
Write down the time the stream stopped, including the time zone. Preserve the full FFmpeg command with the stream key removed, the FFmpeg version and build configuration, and complete timestamped stderr from startup through failure. Also record whether the local input or archive kept playing and what CPU utilization looked like around the stop.
Do not share or publish the stream key. If it has been exposed, replace it in YouTube Live Control Room and update the command or configuration that uses it. YouTube recommends checking encoder errors, CPU load, and local archive quality when diagnosing encoder problems (YouTube live-stream troubleshooting).
2. Compare the failure time with YouTube’s stream health
Open the event in YouTube Live Control Room and compare the stream-health indicator and any timestamped error messages with the time FFmpeg stopped. Confirm that the stream is using the current server URL and stream key for the intended event, and that the configured protocol matches the endpoint.

For RTMPS, copy the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room rather than assuming it is interchangeable with the ordinary RTMP URL. If the error mentions a connection timeout or SSL, check the protocol and host and follow YouTube’s RTMPS connection guidance, including its instructions about port 443 (Encrypt your stream using RTMPS; YouTube live-stream error messages).
A useful first distinction is whether FFmpeg appears to be producing output while YouTube reports an ingestion or connection problem. Healthy local output alongside unhealthy YouTube ingestion points toward the outbound path or ingestion configuration; FFmpeg errors, high CPU, or a bad local archive point toward the encoder or source. This is a diagnostic branch, not a conclusion about an incident without its logs.

3. Check whether the stream bitrate fits the outbound connection
YouTube recommends keeping total stream bitrate within available upload bandwidth and leaving 20% headroom. Judge that against outbound performance from the actual EC2 streaming environment—not a home internet speed test, download speed, or an advertised peak instance rate. Competing traffic also consumes capacity (YouTube streaming tips).
Use YouTube’s current encoder-settings table for the chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate rather than treating one bitrate as suitable for every stream. Its guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS; H.264, H.265, and AV1 video options; AAC or MP3 audio; CBR bitrate encoding; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Check the installed FFmpeg build to verify that it supports the settings you choose (YouTube live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions).

4. Check EC2 network performance and limits
Identify the instance type first
Record the exact EC2 instance type, then compare its documented network performance and any baseline or burst behavior with the stream’s bitrate and other traffic. AWS says available bandwidth depends on factors including instance type, vCPU count, traffic destination, and network allowances (Amazon EC2 instance network bandwidth). “Mumbai” identifies the region, not the instance’s network capacity, and does not establish a regional fault.
Review CloudWatch traffic around the stop
In CloudWatch, inspect the instance’s NetworkOut and NetworkPacketsOut around the failure time. These metrics show outgoing byte and packet volume and can help reveal changing traffic, but a normal-looking graph does not rule out a short-lived network spike or saturation. AWS notes that standard instance metrics can be too coarse to show microbursts (EC2 CloudWatch instance metrics; EC2 network bandwidth).

Inspect ENA allowance counters where available
Where the instance and its ENA configuration support them, check allowance counters including bw_out_allowance_exceeded, pps_allowance_exceeded, and conntrack_allowance_exceeded. On Linux, AWS documents collecting ENA network-performance metrics with the CloudWatch Agent’s ethtool plugin. Confirm the relevant metrics are configured and collection is working before interpreting an empty metric series as evidence of zero pressure (AWS network performance metrics).
5. Make one evidence-led change, then retest
- YouTube reports a timeout or SSL problem: Verify the copied endpoint, protocol, host, and port against YouTube’s RTMPS instructions before changing bitrate or resizing the instance.
- YouTube reports inadequate bandwidth, or AWS allowance counters show pressure: Reduce the stream bitrate within YouTube’s settings for the chosen codec and format, limit competing outbound traffic, and compare demand with the exact instance type’s documented network performance.
- FFmpeg reports encoder errors, CPU is saturated, or the local source/archive is defective: Investigate input health, encoder load, and FFmpeg settings before treating AWS bandwidth as the cause.
- The signals disagree or no cause is clear: Run a controlled test and collect all four evidence streams—FFmpeg stderr, YouTube health, encoder/source status, and AWS network observations—on the same timeline. Avoid changing several settings at once; otherwise, the next result will be harder to interpret.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos looping on a YouTube channel, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative to maintaining your own FFmpeg process on an EC2 instance. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. The monthly price is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo streams uploaded videos to YouTube, not from a camera. Learn about StreamNeo, or start your free day.
