A reconnect only confirms that a connection was re-established; it does not confirm that OBS resumed sending video or that YouTube is receiving it.
There is no universal reconnect reset documented for this exact symptom. Use the checks below to choose a fix based on what is actually missing.
Locate where the video disappears
Compare the same moment in three places. This separates a scene or encoder problem on your computer from an ingest problem between OBS and YouTube.
- Check the OBS preview. If it is black or missing the expected picture, inspect the active scene, source visibility, and capture device before changing YouTube settings.
- Check a local recording, if available. Review the recording from the period after the reconnect. If it also lacks video, the problem is likely in the scene, source, or encoder/output path rather than only in YouTube playback. Preserve the recording and OBS logs around the incident.
- Check YouTube Live Control Room. If OBS preview and the local recording show video, inspect YouTube’s stream preview, health indicator, and timestamped errors. These show whether YouTube is receiving video and can point to a missing video stream or incorrect keyframe frequency. YouTube’s streaming troubleshooting guidance recommends checking encoder output and the local archive as well as stream health.
Do not infer that video is reaching the audience just because OBS audio meters move or YouTube receives sound. Verify video independently at each stage.

If OBS preview or the local recording has no video
Check the scene and sources
- Confirm the scene you intend to stream is active and that its video sources are visible.
- Check whether a capture device is still available and producing a picture. If the source disappeared or stopped updating around the reconnect, restore that source before changing ingest settings.
- Look for OBS encoder errors and unusually high CPU load. YouTube recommends checking the encoder directly and reviewing a local archive for audio or video problems.
Confirm OBS is outputting video
Inspect the stream’s video output and encoder status, not just the audio meters or connection indicator. If the preview is healthy but the local recording and stream output are not, investigate the recording/stream output path and encoder errors. The precise controls can vary by OBS version, operating system, and output configuration, none of which are specified here; avoid assuming one exact menu path or setting applies to every setup.
If OBS and the local recording have video but YouTube does not
Use the timestamped Live Control Room warning to guide the next change. A warning that YouTube is receiving no video calls for checking whether the encoder is actually sending its video stream after reconnect. A keyframe-frequency warning instead points to keyframe cadence. Correct the reported issue, then verify the preview and health indicator again.

Check protocol and encoder settings
Confirm the protocol and audio/video codecs configured in OBS are supported for the stream configuration you selected. YouTube’s recommendations vary by protocol and configuration, so consult its current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions rather than treating one codec preset as universal.
- Use constant bitrate (CBR), as YouTube recommends.
- Set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds; YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds.
- Make sure video remains present in the encoder output after reconnect, even if audio is being sent successfully.
If Live Control Room reports an incorrect video setting, follow that specific message and verify the protocol and encoder configuration. Do not change unrelated settings without evidence that they are involved.

If the video output is healthy but delivery is unstable
When OBS and the local recording show video but YouTube’s delivery is interrupted or degraded, check OBS’s dropped-frame statistics and connection symptoms. OBS explains that dropped frames indicate an unstable connection or one that cannot sustain the selected bitrate; severe drops can disconnect a stream. - Try a stable, lower video bitrate if the connection cannot sustain the current one.
- If possible, test another server or service to help isolate whether the issue is specific to the selected ingest path.
- Review network configuration and connection quality. Wi-Fi can be unstable for streaming; OBS recommends a wired Ethernet connection. Treat Wi-Fi as one possible cause, not a diagnosis by itself.
- Restart a modem or router, or test network hardware, only when the evidence points to a network problem. A missing-video ingest warning by itself is not a reason to replace equipment.
What not to reset blindly
Do not reset or replace your YouTube stream key just because the stream became audio-only after reconnecting. YouTube’s key guidance is relevant to encoder-start or key errors; the reviewed guidance does not establish a changed key as a remedy for a live stream that has sound but no video. First read the timestamped error and establish whether OBS itself is sending video.

Likewise, there is no documented, guaranteed “reconnect fix” button sequence for this symptom. The right recovery depends on whether the picture is missing in OBS, the local archive, or only at YouTube ingest.

- Start a controlled test and include both audio and movement similar to your normal stream. YouTube Help advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.”
- Watch the Live Control Room preview and health indicator, including timestamped errors.
- Check that the local archive contains both usable audio and video.
- Monitor OBS for encoder errors, CPU load, dropped frames, or another disconnect.
These checks help confirm that video is reaching YouTube and that the local recording is intact; a connected status alone does not establish either result. YouTube’s additional live streaming tips cover monitoring stream quality and checking the preview.
