If your YouTube stream loses audio after FFmpeg reconnects, first find out where the reconnect happens: on an HTTP input, or on FFmpeg’s streaming output to YouTube. Reconnect options for FFmpeg’s HTTP protocol can recover an HTTP connection, but they do not select or restore an audio stream. Check the source audio, FFmpeg’s stream mapping, YouTube’s ingest health, and the outbound connection separately.
1. Identify which connection is reconnecting
FFmpeg’s documented reconnect, reconnect_at_eof, reconnect_streamed, and reconnect_on_network_error options apply to the HTTP protocol. They address an HTTP connection; they do not choose an audio stream for the output. Confirm that the options are being applied to an HTTP input and not assume they fix a dropped RTMP/RTMPS output connection to YouTube. See FFmpeg’s HTTP protocol documentation.
Note which connection actually drops, and capture the FFmpeg command and logs around the reconnect. If the output to YouTube is reconnecting, diagnose that output path separately; HTTP input flags alone do not establish why audio is missing after it returns.
2. Verify that FFmpeg selects the intended audio
Inspect the source and the command’s mapping. For one input containing both video and audio, this explicit mapping selects its first video and first audio streams:

Use it only if those streams match the actual source. If audio comes from a second input, map the audio stream from that input instead. Stream indices vary by source, so do not copy a mapping without checking the input layout.
If the intended audio stream is absent from the input, mapping cannot restore it. Likewise, making the audio map optional may let FFmpeg continue without audio; it does not guarantee audio will be present. Check whether audio is present in the source and in FFmpeg’s output or preview before focusing on YouTube.

3. Read YouTube’s stream-health messages
Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and review the stream-health status and messages while the stream is running. YouTube identifies missing or multiple audio streams, unsupported codecs, sample-rate problems, and excess audio channels as possible ingest issues. Its encoder guidance lists AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS audio; check the current YouTube live encoder settings for the applicable audio recommendations.
YouTube’s live streaming error messages include: “Your encoder is sending no audio. On some encoders there’s a tick box to turn on audio. YouTube’s pipeline requires audio on all videos.” Treat the actual health message as evidence: a missing-audio warning points to a different issue than a codec or channel warning.

4. Pinpoint where audio disappears
Compare observations at more than one point: the audio source, FFmpeg’s output or preview, any local archive, YouTube’s health messages, and the outbound connection. YouTube recommends checking source routing, encoder errors and CPU load, the local archive, and outbound internet connection in its stream-health troubleshooting guidance.
- No audio in the FFmpeg output or local archive: investigate the source, input stream selection, mapping, and FFmpeg processing.
- Audio in the FFmpeg output and archive, but not at YouTube: compare the outgoing stream with YouTube’s health messages and inspect the outbound connection and ingest path.
- The health report flags format or channel issues: check the encoded audio codec, sample rate, and channel count against YouTube’s current guidance.
These checks help localize the failure but do not, by themselves, prove a root cause. If the audio disappears only after a reconnect, preserve the command, relevant logs, and health messages from before and after it happens.

5. Test under realistic conditions
Before relying on the stream, run a preflight using audio and movement similar to the planned broadcast. Monitor YouTube’s stream health and messages during the test, and keep the FFmpeg command and reconnect logs so you can compare what FFmpeg sent with what YouTube received. YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and motion and monitoring stream health during the event; see its encoder setup and streaming guidance.
