If your encoder says your YouTube stream key is invalid, copy the current key from YouTube Studio and replace the saved key in your encoder. Reconnecting alone is not established as a cause; a stale or mismatched saved key is one plausible explanation. If you sign in to YouTube through the encoder instead of entering a key, contact the encoder’s support team because its integration may need an update.
Replace the key in your encoder
- Check how the encoder connects. If it has a stream-key field, follow the steps below. If you connect by signing in to YouTube and do not enter a key, contact the encoder provider’s support team; YouTube says the software may need an update to work with YouTube Live. See YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance.
- Open the current stream settings. In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go Live, then open the Stream tab in Live Control Room.
- Copy the current key. Copy the stream key shown for the current settings. YouTube describes a stream key as the password and address that tell the encoder where to send the feed and allow YouTube to accept it. Keep it private: anyone with access to it may be able to send a stream to your channel. See Manage live stream settings.
- Replace the encoder’s saved key. Paste the copied value into the stream-key field for the correct YouTube destination. Save the encoder settings, then try starting the encoder again. Do not rely on a remembered value if the key was changed or reset.
When to reset the stream key
Reset the key only if replacing the encoder’s saved value with the current key does not resolve the problem, or if you need a new credential. In Live Control Room’s Stream tab, find Stream key and select Reset next to the hidden key. Copy the newly generated key and replace the encoder’s saved value with it. Only a channel owner or manager can reset a key; editors and viewers do not have permission.
If the key still appears invalid
Update and check the encoder
Install the latest version of the encoder, then review its own diagnostics. If the key is accepted but the stream still will not start or looks unhealthy, check the encoder’s local audio and video output and CPU load. YouTube also recommends trying another encoder if the local output has problems.
Separate key errors from RTMPS or network errors
An invalid-key message points first to the credential. SSL errors, connection timeouts, and outbound connectivity problems are different issues; changing network settings is not the first fix for a key mismatch.

- For an SSL error: confirm the server URL and protocol. If using RTMPS, get the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room and use an encoder that supports RTMPS. YouTube suggests specifying port 443 for an SSL error.
- For a connection timeout: verify the server URL and that the encoder supports the selected protocol. See YouTube’s RTMPS guidance.
- If the encoder’s output looks healthy but its outbound connection may be failing: test your internet connection. If the test indicates a problem, contact your internet provider.
