Puppeteer’s official screenshot workflow is an API—not a built-in command that takes a URL argument. If you specifically need a one-line terminal command, use a third-party wrapper and verify that it is maintained and compatible with your Puppeteer version.
Capture a URL with Puppeteer’s official API
The official Puppeteer workflow is: launch a browser, navigate to the URL, save the screenshot, and close the browser. Puppeteer’s documentation puts it simply: “For capturing screenshots use Page.screenshot().” The following runnable ES module saves a viewport-sized PNG:

}Save it as screenshot.mjs, then run node screenshot.mjs. Install Puppeteer first with npm i puppeteer. The install normally downloads a compatible Chrome for Testing and a chrome-headless-shell. See the official screenshot guide and installation guide.
Wait for page navigation when needed
For pages that need time to load, choose a navigation wait condition explicitly. Puppeteer’s guide demonstrates networkidle2:

Applications may load images, charts, or other content after network activity settles. For those pages, wait for a known element or a page-specific condition before taking the screenshot.
Choose what the screenshot contains and how it is saved
Puppeteer’s screenshot options let you choose the page extent, output path, image format, crop, and background behavior. The documented defaults are a viewport capture (fullPage: false) and PNG.

Capture one element instead of the page
Use an element handle when you need a particular component, not a full-page image or a manually calculated crop:

Need a single terminal command? Use a wrapper, not the browser-management CLI
Puppeteer’s @puppeteer/browsers CLI manages browser installations and launches; its documented purpose is not to accept an arbitrary URL and save a screenshot. Its help and installation commands are useful for browser setup, but they are not a URL-to-image screenshot command. See the browser CLI documentation.

Third-party packages provide direct command-line interfaces. For example, capture-website-cli describes a capture-website <url|file> command, uses Puppeteer under the hood, and documents image output and viewport options. Another package, puppeteer-screenshot-cli, documents a command shaped like puppeteer-screenshot --url https://example.com --output screenshot.png, with selector, format, viewport, timeout, and full-page options. Its npm listing showed version 1.5.0 and a publication date six years before the listing was retrieved; current maintenance and compatibility are not established. Check a wrapper’s release history, supported Node.js and Puppeteer versions, and option documentation before relying on it.
Install and troubleshoot Puppeteer
Browser executable is missing
Puppeteer’s normal installation downloads its compatible browser. Package managers or environment settings that block install scripts can skip that download, leaving Puppeteer unable to find the expected Chrome version. Follow the installation guide’s manual browser installation route, such as npx puppeteer browsers install, then rerun the script.

You want to use a browser you manage
puppeteer includes a browser download and sensible defaults. puppeteer-core does not download a browser; use it when managing the browser yourself or connecting to a remote browser, and configure the executable path or channel as required by your setup. The official installation guide explains the distinction.

The image is blank or content is missing
- Confirm that
page.goto()completed before the screenshot call. - Wait for the specific content you expect with a selector or application-specific condition; a network-idle event may not cover delayed rendering.
- For a long page, set
fullPage: true; the default captures only the viewport. - For a single component, wait for its selector and use the element’s screenshot method.
The CLI command or its options do not work
Check that the wrapper is installed and that the executable name and flags match that package’s current documentation. A third-party CLI is not the same as Puppeteer’s browser-management CLI, and package options or compatibility can change. If you need the official, scriptable path, use Puppeteer’s Node.js API example above.
Browser setup, reliability, and cost considerations
The API script gives you direct control over navigation waits, screenshot options, and element selection, but you are responsible for Node.js, browser installation, and handling each page’s loading behavior. A wrapper can shorten a one-off command, while adding a dependency whose maintenance and compatibility you should check. The documentation describes behavior and setup; it does not establish a performance comparison between the API and third-party wrappers.
