If Puppeteer’s screenshot stops before the page ends, first confirm you are using fullPage: true. Then check that no clip is restricting the capture, wait for the page’s relevant content and layout to finish rendering, and set the intended viewport before navigating. These options address different causes, so work through them in that order.

Request a full-page capture

page.screenshot() captures the viewport by default. Set fullPage: true to request the full page. Puppeteer’s ScreenshotOptions reference, identified as version 25.12.0, documents that option and its default as false (Puppeteer ScreenshotOptions).

await page.screenshot({
  path: 'page.png',
  fullPage: true,
});

A minimal runnable example using ES modules:

import puppeteer from 'puppeteer';

const browser = await puppeteer.launch();
try {
  const page = await browser.newPage();
  await page.setViewport({ width: 1440, height: 900 });
  await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle2' });
  await page.screenshot({ path: 'full-page.png', fullPage: true });
} finally {
  await browser.close();
}

Run it in a project where Puppeteer is installed and Node.js supports ES modules. Replace the example URL with the page you need to capture. The viewport dimensions are an example; choose dimensions appropriate to the page.

Check whether a clip is limiting the screenshot

The clip option requests a particular rectangle rather than an unrestricted full-page capture. If you want the entire page, remove clip. If you intentionally need a region, verify its x, y, width, and height; a smaller rectangle can make the result appear cut off. The same ScreenshotOptions reference documents clip as the region to capture.

Make capture extent explicit when using wrappers or clips

captureBeyondViewport controls capturing beyond the viewport. Its documented default is context-dependent: false when there is no clip and true when a clip is present. If a wrapper or shared options object may be changing screenshot settings, inspect the final options passed to Puppeteer and set the intended value explicitly. Do not add conflicting capture settings as a substitute for confirming the requested scope.

await page.screenshot({
  path: 'page.png',
  fullPage: true,
  captureBeyondViewport: true,
});

Use this as an explicit setting to test when viewport boundaries are involved; it does not replace fullPage: true or remove an unintended clip. See the ScreenshotOptions reference for the documented option behavior.

Wait for the content the page actually needs to render

Navigate before capturing, and wait for the page’s relevant content—not just an arbitrary delay. Puppeteer’s screenshot guide demonstrates page.goto() with waitUntil: 'networkidle2' before taking a screenshot (Puppeteer screenshot guide). That is a useful starting point, not a guarantee that every client-rendered application has finished drawing or appending content.

await page.goto(url, { waitUntil: 'networkidle2' });
await page.waitForSelector('[data-page-ready="true"]');
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true });

Replace the selector with a readiness signal the target application actually provides. For example, wait for the page’s main content container or a known completion marker. If the site loads sections only after scrolling, a full-page option alone may not trigger that site-specific behavior; arrange for the page to load the required content before capture.

Set the viewport before navigation

Choose the viewport before calling goto(). Puppeteer’s Page documentation advises setting the viewport before navigation because many sites do not expect phone-sized viewport changes (Puppeteer Page API).

await page.setViewport({ width: 1440, height: 900 });
await page.goto(url, { waitUntil: 'networkidle2' });

Do not treat page.viewport() as a live measurement of the browser page: the documented method returns Puppeteer’s recorded viewport settings, not a check of the actual page viewport. If the rendered layout is unexpected, verify when the viewport was set and inspect the actual output rather than relying on that method alone.

Choose the right capture scope

  • Entire document: use page.screenshot({ fullPage: true }).
  • A rectangular region: use clip and confirm the rectangle is large enough for the requested area.
  • One element: use ElementHandle.screenshot(). The screenshot guide notes that this method scrolls a hidden element into view if needed.

Changing scope is not a fix for missing content: an element capture only includes that element, and a clip only includes its specified region. The appropriate method depends on what you intend to save.

Troubleshoot the cutoff in order

  1. Confirm the option: inspect the actual call and verify fullPage: true; it defaults to false.
  2. Remove or correct the clip: check whether a wrapper or shared options object adds clip, then remove it for a whole-page shot or correct its coordinates and dimensions.
  3. Inspect capture extent: check captureBeyondViewport, especially if a clip or wrapper is involved. Make the intended setting explicit when needed.
  4. Wait for application readiness: confirm the missing section exists before the screenshot call. Use a specific selector or app-ready signal when network idleness does not mean rendering is complete.
  5. Set viewport before navigation: move setViewport() ahead of goto() and choose the dimensions needed for the target layout.
  6. Match the scope to the goal: use full-page capture for the document, clip for a region, or ElementHandle.screenshot() for an element.
  7. Check Puppeteer version if viewport state changes: the changelog records a Puppeteer 22.12.1 fix dated 2024-06-26 for resetting the viewport after a full-page screenshot when defaultViewport is null (Puppeteer changelog). This is a specific historical fix, not evidence that every cutoff is a version bug.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need a screenshot through an API rather than maintaining a Puppeteer browser flow, ScreenshotNeo returns a screenshot or PDF from one GET request. Its capture can remove cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before the shot. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed; response headers report the page verdict and billing status. ScreenshotNeo also has an MCP server for AI agents, with screenshot, page-info, and PDF-capture tools.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Puppeteer make a full-page screenshot by default?

No. The documented default for fullPage is false, so set it to true for a full-page capture.

Does networkidle2 guarantee that all page content is ready?

No. It is an example navigation wait condition; use an application-specific selector or readiness signal when content renders or loads later.

Which Puppeteer version fixed a full-page screenshot viewport reset?

The changelog lists Puppeteer 22.12.1, dated 2024-06-26, for resetting the viewport after a full-page screenshot when defaultViewport is null. That fix applies to the stated viewport-state case.
