Use PNG when you need transparency, want Puppeteer’s default output, or prefer to avoid JPEG’s lossy quality setting. Choose JPEG when you want lossy compression with an adjustable quality value. Puppeteer’s current API type definition also lists WebP, but confirm your installed version supports it before using it.
PNG vs. JPEG in Puppeteer

The official API documentation does not establish a universal JPEG quality value or publish a controlled PNG-versus-JPEG file-size or visual-fidelity benchmark. Test representative pages and settings if output size or appearance is critical.
Save a page screenshot in PNG or JPEG
Install Puppeteer and launch a browser as you normally do. The following examples assume page is an open Puppeteer Page.
PNG: default and transparency

JPEG: choose a quality value

});The documented range is 0–100. The API does not prescribe one best value, and the number alone does not guarantee a particular file size or visual result. Compare output from your own pages before settling on a setting.
Keep the file extension and format aligned
When you provide path, Puppeteer infers the screenshot type from the file extension. A .png path selects PNG and a .jpg path identifies JPEG. You can also set type explicitly; keeping both consistent makes the intended output clear.

For WebP, check the API reference for the Puppeteer version installed in your project. The current type definition includes WebP, but format availability is version-sensitive.
Capture a full page, a region, or an element
These options change what Puppeteer captures, not the basic PNG-versus-JPEG decision:

Choose the output format using the same rules: PNG for transparency or the default behavior, JPEG when you want its quality control.
Troubleshooting
- The image is not transparent: Set
omitBackground: trueand check that the page and target element do not paint an opaque background. - The output format is unexpected: Check the
pathextension and any explicittype; make them agree. - Changing quality has no effect: Puppeteer documents
qualityfor JPEG, not PNG. Settype: 'jpeg'and use a JPEG extension if you need that control. - WebP is rejected or unavailable: Verify the installed Puppeteer version’s screenshot API; the current type definition is not a guarantee for older releases.
