Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Use Playwright Test’s toHaveScreenshot() to compare selected documentation pages against approved reference images, then run the checks in CI on pull requests. Start with a small set of important pages and states, make their rendering repeatable, and review every baseline change before accepting it. Screenshot comparisons catch visual regressions; they do not replace functional, accessibility, or content checks.
Choose the pages and states worth protecting
Begin with a small representative set rather than capturing every route. Choose pages where a layout regression would make the documentation harder to use:
- The documentation landing page.
- A typical article and a long article with a table of contents.
- The navigation or sidebar in its normal and expanded states.
- Search results using controlled query data.
- Code samples, including copy buttons or other controls if their appearance matters.
- A narrow viewport where the navigation, tables, and code blocks reflow.
Keep each capture’s route, viewport, fixture data, and UI state explicit. A screenshot is only useful as a comparison when the same inputs produce the same intended page state.
Add Playwright screenshot assertions
Install and configure Playwright Test in the documentation repository, then add a test for each representative page or state. This illustrative TypeScript pattern assumes DOCS_BASE_URL is set and that the route is ready to capture; adapt readiness and authentication to the site.

import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('documentation article visual baseline', async ({ page }) => {
const baseUrl = process.env.DOCS_BASE_URL;
if (!baseUrl) throw new Error('Set DOCS_BASE_URL');
await page.setViewportSize({ width: 1280, height: 800 });
await page.goto(new URL('/getting-started', baseUrl).toString());
await expect(page.getByRole('heading', { name: 'Getting started' })).toBeVisible();
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('getting-started.png');
});
The route and heading are examples, not a tested implementation for a particular documentation platform. Use a readiness condition that represents the actual content being tested; reaching the URL alone may not mean client-rendered content or fonts have settled. Playwright’s visual comparison creates a reference screenshot on the first run and compares later captures with it. It takes repeated captures until two consecutive screenshots match, which reduces transient rendering noise. See Playwright’s visual comparisons documentation.
Capture a particular element or state
For a sidebar, search panel, or code block, capture the element rather than the entire page when the surrounding page is irrelevant:
await expect(page.getByRole('navigation')).toHaveScreenshot('documentation-navigation.png');
For a responsive state, set the viewport before navigating or before the screenshot, and give that state a distinct baseline name. Keep hover, expanded menus, and search overlays deliberate: trigger them in the test if they are part of the desired coverage, or ensure they are closed otherwise.

Create and review approved baselines
Run the tests in the same browser and operating environment intended for CI. Inspect first-run images for the right content, viewport, and state, then commit the approved snapshot files with the tests. Playwright stores image snapshots in a directory associated with the test file; its guidance recommends committing and reviewing those files.
When a design change is intentional, regenerate snapshots with:
npx playwright test --update-snapshots
Review the resulting image diffs as part of the code change. Updating a baseline records approval of a new appearance; it should not be an automatic fix for a failing test. Playwright documents snapshot storage and updates in its visual comparisons guide.

Make screenshots repeatable
Visual tests are sensitive to rendering conditions. Playwright notes that host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode can affect pixels; browser and platform differences can also change rendering and fonts. Keep baseline generation and CI capture on a stable browser/runtime and operating system or container configuration. Do not refresh baselines from a different environment casually.
Control page variability
- Use deterministic fixture content and stable route/query parameters instead of live or rotating data.
- Wait for a meaningful page-ready condition, such as a key heading or article container becoming visible.
- Prevent capture during animations or transitions when those effects are not under test.
- Mask or hide changing timestamps, rotating notices, and other known volatile regions where their appearance is not the subject of the test. Playwright supports a screenshot stylesheet through
stylePath. - Keep viewport, browser project, fonts, and relevant locale or timezone settings consistent.
Playwright’s screenshot assertion already waits for consecutive screenshots to match. First remove avoidable instability before widening pixel-difference tolerances: a permissive threshold can conceal genuine layout or styling changes. Details and options are in the Playwright visual comparisons documentation.
Example stylesheet for volatile elements
Where a changing element is known and unimportant to the comparison, supply a stylesheet to neutralize it. For example, a project can define a stable test class or selector and pass that stylesheet using the screenshot assertion’s stylePath option:

- INCREASED VERSATILITY: Connect to more; Plug devices straight into your monitor for increased flexibility, making your computing environment even more convenient
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('article.png', {
stylePath: './tests/visual-screenshot.css',
});
Keep such rules narrow and test-specific. Hiding broad regions can make the baseline pass while an important part of the documentation is broken.
Run the checks in CI
Run screenshot tests on pull requests so reviewers can inspect visual changes before merge. Playwright’s CI documentation includes a GitHub Actions workflow triggered by pushes and pull requests, installs browser dependencies, runs npx playwright test, and uploads the HTML report as an artifact. It also describes container execution and tests triggered after deployment. See Playwright continuous integration guidance.
- Install the project dependencies and the browser dependencies required by the configured Playwright projects.
- Set the documentation base URL and any test credentials through CI variables or secrets, not committed source code.
- Run
npx playwright testagainst a local build or a ready pull-request preview. - Upload the Playwright report and relevant test artifacts so failures can be inspected.
- Use the same controlled rendering environment for baseline generation and CI comparison.
For preview deployments, wait until the preview is available and point the tests at its URL. A deployment-triggered run is also useful for checking the deployed target, but it serves a different point in the workflow than a pre-merge pull-request check.

Choose local snapshots or hosted visual review
Playwright’s built-in snapshots suit teams that want the reference images in the repository and local test failures when images differ. A hosted review service can centralize visual diffs and approval, and may offer broader browser or viewport capture workflows.
| Decision | Local Playwright snapshots | Percy hosted review |
|---|---|---|
| Where changes are reviewed | Test output and committed baseline files. | Percy build and review interface; see BrowserStack’s Percy visual testing guide. |
| Baseline handling | Snapshot files live with the repository; update and review changes before committing. | Builds compare captures with approved baselines through Percy’s workflow; see Percy’s Playwright integration documentation. |
| CI result | The native screenshot assertion can fail when the comparison differs. | Changes are reviewed in Percy; configure a wait or gate if unapproved changes must fail the pipeline. |
| Coverage approach | Use configured Playwright browser and platform projects in a consistent environment. | Percy describes captures across browsers and responsive widths. |
| Operational tradeoff | Your team manages image baselines and rendering stability. | A hosted service adds vendor configuration, token handling, a review flow, and program terms to verify. |
Percy is optional, not a prerequisite for screenshot comparisons. The Percy Playwright integration can route toHaveScreenshot() assertions through Percy. In that workflow, a passing test run does not itself mean there are no visual changes: configure the appropriate review wait or gate when CI must fail until changes are approved, and use credentials with the access required for that gate. Check current availability and terms directly with the provider.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do screenshot tests replace accessibility or functional tests?
No. They identify visual differences; keep functional, accessibility, and content checks as separate parts of the test suite.
Should every documentation page have a screenshot baseline?
Not necessarily. Start with representative pages and states whose visual regressions would meaningfully affect readers, then expand coverage where it has value.
