If a YouTube Live stream keeps buffering on BSNL, first lower the stream’s playback quality and check YouTube’s Stats for nerds, especially Buffer Health. A speed test alone cannot identify the cause: buffering may come from Wi-Fi, congestion, the viewing device, or the stream’s live-latency settings—not simply the creator’s bitrate or BSNL.
Why does YouTube Live keep buffering on BSNL?
Buffering happens when the player cannot keep enough video data ready to play. The cause might be an unstable or congested connection, weak Wi-Fi at the viewing device, other devices using the connection, an overly demanding playback resolution, or conditions affecting a particular live stream. YouTube’s general troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the connection and device, trying another connection, and lowering playback quality where needed (YouTube playback troubleshooting).
A speed-test result is only a snapshot of a connection at one time. It does not necessarily reflect the route or available bandwidth when YouTube is playing a live stream, or the conditions at the TV or phone. Compare the same stream and device under similar conditions before drawing conclusions about BSNL.
What bitrate do I need to watch YouTube Live?
As a viewer, you usually do not set the broadcaster’s encoder bitrate. Focus on the resolution selected in your YouTube player and whether your connection can sustain it. YouTube lists the following recommended sustained speeds by playback resolution:

| Playback resolution | YouTube recommended sustained speed |
|---|---|
| 4K | 20 Mbps |
| 1080p HD | 5 Mbps |
| 720p HD | 2.5 Mbps |
| 480p SD | 1.1 Mbps |
| 360p SD | 0.7 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s general recommendations, not a guarantee that a live stream will play without interruptions (YouTube video playback errors). Separately, YouTube’s TV troubleshooting page recommends at least 7 Mbps for HD streaming. That figure is guidance for its TV troubleshooting use case, not a universal threshold to combine with the resolution-specific table (YouTube TV troubleshooting).
YouTube automatically transcodes creator streams into formats for viewers on different devices and networks. A broadcaster’s bitrate mainly concerns getting the stream to YouTube; for your playback, the more useful checks are the selected resolution, connection stability, and the player’s buffer.

How do I check latency on a BSNL connection?
“Latency” can mean two different things. Network latency—often called ping—is the response delay between your device and a destination on the network. Live latency is how far behind the live event your playback is. A ping test does not tell you how far behind the broadcast you are, and YouTube’s live Buffer Health is not a ping measurement.
Check the player’s live buffer
Where available, open YouTube’s Stats for nerds while the stream is playing. Look at connection speed, current and optimal resolution, Buffer Health, and whether the player repeatedly re-buffers. Buffer Health shows the reserve of live video available to the player; if it repeatedly falls and playback stalls, the player is struggling to keep ahead of playback. YouTube describes Stats for nerds and debug information as tools for diagnosing playback issues (Stats for nerds; YouTube live latency).

- NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
Understand the live-latency trade-off
Broadcasters can choose live-stream latency settings, and lower latency reduces the player’s read-ahead buffer. That can make playback more vulnerable to interruptions: YouTube’s guidance says, “With lower latency, your viewers may experience more playback buffering.” If only one live stream is affected while other video plays normally, the stream’s latency or ingestion conditions may be part of the explanation; it does not by itself establish a BSNL fault (YouTube live latency).
How to diagnose buffering step by step
- Record what is happening. Note the time and location, device, YouTube app or browser, stream, selected quality, connection type, exact error text, and whether other sites or services also stall. This makes later comparisons useful.
- Reduce playback quality. In the player’s settings, choose a lower quality and see whether the same stream plays more steadily. If it does, the stream may be exceeding what the connection can sustain at that moment; it does not prove the underlying connection is always too slow.
- Compare another device. Play the same stream on another supported device using the same connection. If only one device has trouble, restart or update the app or device. On Android, try clearing the YouTube app cache. YouTube also recommends changing connections when troubleshooting playback (YouTube playback troubleshooting).
- Compare another connection. If practical, try Wi-Fi versus mobile data, or another internet connection, while keeping the stream and quality as similar as possible. If it works on the alternate path, that narrows the issue to the original connection path or its interaction with the stream; it does not prove BSNL caused it.
- Check the connection where you watch. For a TV, test speed at the TV’s location, move the device closer to the router, and reduce obstructions or interference. Pause heavy use by other devices and try again. YouTube recommends checking device placement and interference, as well as manually lowering playback quality when needed (YouTube TV troubleshooting).
- Use Stats for nerds. Note connection speed, current and optimal resolution, Buffer Health, and whether rebuffering repeats. Compare the readings before and after lowering quality or changing the connection.
- Try Ethernet only as a comparison, if supported. If both the viewing device and router have compatible ports, a cable can help determine whether Wi-Fi is involved. Treat it as a diagnostic option, not a guaranteed repair: YouTube’s Ethernet guidance is specifically for computer live broadcasters, so applying it to a viewer is a cautious inference (YouTube live streaming requirements).
- Escalate with useful details. If the problem follows your BSNL connection across devices, streams, or services, save repeat observations with date, time, location, and test results, then contact BSNL support. If only one stream is affected, its broadcast conditions remain another possibility.
What BSNL and TRAI measurements can—and cannot—tell you
TRAI’s 2025 Kolkata regional report lists, in its overall BSNL data-performance row, a 4.06-second YouTube initial buffer delay, 58 ms 50th-percentile latency, 74.75 ms jitter, and 18.56% packet loss. These are measurements from the report’s regional testing and conditions—not national averages, current readings for your home, or proof that BSNL caused a particular buffering event. The report also shows variation between test locations, so a regional result cannot substitute for a test at your viewing device (TRAI Kolkata regional report, 2025).
