For a 1080p, 24 fps YouTube Live loop, use progressive 1920×1080 video, H.264, constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval (48 frames), and RTMPS where supported. Include AAC stereo audio if the source has sound. YouTube does not publish a 1080p24 row in its live bitrate table, so there is no official 1080p24 bitrate to quote; its 1080p30 H.264 figures are useful context only, not a 24 fps prescription.

Recommended 1080p24 settings

Setting Recommended configuration Important qualification
Resolution and scan 1920×1080, progressive, square pixels Preserve the source composition with scaling and padding, or choose another deliberate aspect-ratio treatment.
Frame rate 24 fps Use the right input or output frame-rate control for the source type, then verify the encoded output.
Video codec H.264 YouTube also lists HEVC and AV1 for live encoding where the encoder and ingestion path support them.
Rate control CBR If your encoder has separate target and maximum bitrate controls, set them consistently for CBR.
Keyframe interval 2 seconds, or 48 frames at 24 fps YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds (96 frames at 24 fps).
Audio AAC stereo, 128 kbps, 44.1 kHz Include and map audio only when the source has audio. YouTube lists AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS.
SDR color Rec. 709, 8-bit These are YouTube’s recommended SDR values; HDR needs a separately configured supported path.
Ingest RTMPS Use the endpoint and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room.

YouTube’s live encoder guidance supports H.264, HEVC, and AV1 and frame rates up to 60 fps. For a broadly compatible FFmpeg baseline, H.264 is a practical choice. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and RTMPS help.

What bitrate should you use?

YouTube’s published H.264 live table has no 1080p24 entry. The table lists 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended for 1080p30, and 6 Mbps minimum and 17 Mbps recommended for 1080p60. Those are figures for the listed frame rates; neither row establishes an official bitrate for 1080p24. Do not present one of those values as YouTube’s 24 fps requirement.

If you choose a 24 fps starting bitrate for your own setup, treat it as an estimate rather than an official YouTube value. The right result depends on motion, image complexity, encoder behavior, and sustained upload capacity. Run a speed test, leave upload headroom, and test with movement and audio representative of the real loop. Check YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health messages while testing. The live settings and bitrate table are at YouTube’s encoder guidance.

Build the FFmpeg loop for your source

A still image, numbered image sequence, and existing video need different input handling. FFmpeg options generally apply to the next input or output, so put input options before the corresponding -i. FFmpeg documents -r 24 as an output frame-rate example; for image2 input, use its -framerate option when that is the intended control. See the FFmpeg command-line documentation and FFmpeg all-options reference.

Single still image

Use the image2 demuxer’s frame-rate and loop controls before the input. Its documented default frame rate is 25 fps, so specify the intended rate instead of relying on the default. Check the installed FFmpeg build’s supported options.

ffmpeg -loop 1 -framerate 24 -i still.png [output options] ...

This is an input-shape example, not a complete tested streaming command. Confirm the option syntax supported by your installed build and configure output duration or looping behavior for your intended stream.

Numbered image sequence

Use an image2 sequence pattern and choose an input frame rate that matches the sequence timing you intend. Sequence images should have consistent dimensions, pixel format, and image format. If you deliberately convert the sequence rate at output, check for the expected pacing and frame duplication or dropping.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
ffmpeg -framerate 24 -i 'frame-%05d.png' [output options] ...

Image2 input and sequence behavior are documented in FFmpeg’s all-options documentation.

Existing video file

For a video source, FFmpeg’s loop filter can repeat frames; loop=-1 means repeat indefinitely. An input loop option may also be available in the installed FFmpeg version. Validate timestamps, audio duration, and the transition between the final and first frames: a looping filter does not guarantee a seamless visual or audio seam. See FFmpeg’s filters documentation.

Illustrative RTMPS command shape

The following shows how the output settings fit together. It is illustrative, not a tested command; replace placeholders and add source-specific input/loop options, audio mapping, and a valid endpoint. Check that your FFmpeg build includes the chosen encoder and options.

ffmpeg [source-specific loop/input options] -i INPUT
  -vf "scale=1920:1080:force_original_aspect_ratio=decrease,pad=1920:1080:(ow-iw)/2:(oh-ih)/2,fps=24,format=yuv420p"
  -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v VIDEO_RATE -maxrate VIDEO_RATE -bufsize VBV_SIZE
  -g 48 -keyint_min 48 -sc_threshold 0
[optional audio mapping and AAC encoding]
  -f flv "rtmps://INGEST_URL/STREAM_KEY"
  • Replace VIDEO_RATE and VBV_SIZE with values selected for your encoder and tested connection; YouTube publishes no 1080p24 bitrate row.
  • Use -g 48 for a two-second GOP at 24 fps. Confirm your encoder’s actual GOP behavior, including whether it uses open or closed GOPs.
  • The scaling and padding filter fits the full source inside 1920×1080 while preserving its aspect ratio. If the input is already suitable 1080p24, omit unnecessary scaling. Cropping instead would change composition.
  • Add audio mapping and AAC settings only if there is audio to send. Confirm audio and video durations align at the loop seam.
  • Copy the RTMPS ingest URL from YouTube Live Control Room and keep the stream key private.

YouTube’s stream-health documentation flags issues including long keyframe intervals and open GOP configuration. Confirm that the actual output meets the intended settings rather than assuming the command alone guarantees it. See YouTube LiveStreams API health descriptions.

Connect and test in YouTube Live Control Room

  1. In YouTube Live Control Room, select the stream setup and copy the RTMPS ingest URL and its matching stream key.
  2. Insert those values into the output URL. Do not expose the stream key in screenshots, logs shared publicly, or published command examples.
  3. Start FFmpeg and inspect its output for connection or encoder errors. Then check whether YouTube reports an incoming stream.
  4. Test with representative motion and audio before relying on the loop. Watch Live Control Room’s stream health and resolve warnings before treating the setup as ready.

YouTube recommends testing before starting a live stream. Its RTMPS ingestion guide describes the secure ingest protocol.

Troubleshoot common problems

Symptom Likely checks and fixes
No incoming video Check that the RTMPS endpoint and stream key are the matching values from Live Control Room. Review FFmpeg’s output and YouTube’s incoming-stream status.
Buffering or low stream health Check sustained upload capacity and configured bitrate. YouTube identifies video starvation when it is not receiving enough video to maintain smooth streaming.
Codec, resolution, or keyframe warning Verify the encoded stream’s codec, resolution, frame rate, and keyframe interval. Check GOP length and whether the encoder is using open GOP.
Visible or audible jump at the loop point Inspect source timestamps and audio duration, then validate the transition between the last and first frames and samples. The platform documentation does not promise seamless looping for arbitrary files.
Output is not actually 24 fps Recheck whether frame-rate options were placed before or after the relevant input as intended; inspect the encoded stream and review FFmpeg’s input/output option behavior.

YouTube’s documented health issues include low bitrate, long keyframe intervals, unsupported codecs, open GOP, resolution problems, and video starvation. Consult the API health descriptions alongside Live Control Room messages.

Copyright and YouTube rules for looping content

Using FFmpeg to repeat a file does not grant permission to stream its contents. Use material you own or are authorized to broadcast, including music and other embedded audio. YouTube’s encoder and ingestion guidance explains technical settings, not whether a particular video is eligible for monetization or complies with channel policies. Review current YouTube rules for your content and channel before broadcasting; do not treat a technically healthy stream as proof of rights or monetization eligibility.

Keep the stream running: local FFmpeg or cloud

Running FFmpeg yourself gives you control over the source, encoding, and process, but a continuous stream requires a machine and network connection that remain available. A VPS or dedicated host is another category of place to run FFmpeg; provider suitability and required hardware depend on your setup.
