To monitor an infinite-scroll page reliably, use browser automation to scroll through the content in controlled steps, wait for each batch and its images to load, and capture repeatable viewport checkpoints. Compare those screenshots with reviewed baselines. A single full-page screenshot may not trigger the real scrolling behavior that causes more content to appear.
Why infinite scroll needs a different screenshot workflow
Infinite-scroll pages load more items in response to scrolling, often when the viewport approaches the bottom of the content already shown. A full-page screenshot is not necessarily equivalent to scrolling through the page: it captures the full scrollable document as though displayed on a very tall screen, but may not trigger scroll-dependent loading. A Playwright issue report describes cases where off-screen content such as lazy-loaded images and iframes can be missed this way. It is a reported limitation, not a guarantee that every page or browser will behave identically.
For monitoring, first make the site load the content through actual scroll actions. Then take screenshots at consistent positions. Playwright documents both full-page screenshots and visual snapshot comparisons, but the scrolling and checkpoint strategy must match the page you are monitoring.
Choose the right comparison strategy
| Approach | Useful for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| One full-page screenshot | Checking a page whose content is already present and whose layout fits a single document capture. | May miss content that appears only after actual scrolling. |
| Viewport checkpoints after scrolling | Monitoring scroll-triggered lists, including the content and layout at representative positions. | Requires a repeatable scroll and waiting procedure; more captures need review. |
| Targeted element screenshots | Watching a specific card, list, or component rather than the entire page. | Does not show changes elsewhere or whether the list loaded completely. |
Use checkpoints near the top, middle, and lower loaded regions. If the page has a clear end or a “Load more” control, include that state. If it can keep loading indefinitely, decide in advance how many batches or which content positions matter; otherwise each run may take a different amount of time and produce an unbounded set of screenshots.

Build a repeatable Playwright workflow
The example below is a Playwright Test in JavaScript. Replace the sample URL and page-specific selectors with the target site’s URL and a selector that identifies a loaded item. The test scrolls the viewport, waits for the list to grow, and compares screenshots at checkpoints. It assumes the page exposes items matching .feed-item; some pages instead require a “Load more” click or a different signal that a batch has arrived.
- Install Playwright Test: run
npm init playwright@latestin a new project and choose JavaScript when prompted. This installs the test runner and creates a starter configuration. - Create the test: save the following as
tests/infinite-scroll.spec.js.
const { test, expect } = require('@playwright/test');
test('infinite-scroll page matches visual checkpoints', async ({ page }) => {
await page.setViewportSize({ width: 1280, height: 900 });
await page.goto('https://example.com/feed', { waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded' });
const items = page.locator('.feed-item');
await expect(items.first()).toBeVisible();
// Capture the initial viewport after the first batch appears.
await page.screenshot({ path: 'artifacts/feed-top.png' });
let previousCount = await items.count();
const maxBatches = 5;
for (let batch = 1; batch <= maxBatches; batch++) {
await page.evaluate(() => window.scrollTo(0, document.documentElement.scrollHeight));
// Wait for a newly appended item. If the site has a reliable loading
// indicator or end-of-list marker, wait for that instead.
await expect(items).toHaveCount(previousCount + 1, { timeout: 10000 }).catch(async () => {
// A site may append several items at once; accept any increase.
await expect.poll(() => items.count(), { timeout: 10000 }).toBeGreaterThan(previousCount);
});
previousCount = await items.count();
// Give newly inserted images a chance to finish loading before capture.
await page.evaluate(async () => {
const images = Array.from(document.images);
await Promise.all(images.map(img => {
if (img.complete) return Promise.resolve();
return new Promise(resolve => {
img.addEventListener('load', resolve, { once: true });
img.addEventListener('error', resolve, { once: true });
});
}));
});
// Use a stable name for each viewport checkpoint.
await page.screenshot({ path: `artifacts/feed-batch-${batch}.png` });
}
});
This is a starting pattern, not a universal loading detector. The example expects at least one new item per batch; if a page appends multiple items, the fallback accepts any increase. For production monitoring, prefer a selector or condition that corresponds to the site’s actual batch-complete state, such as a loading indicator disappearing or a known item count being reached. Avoid waiting only a fixed number of milliseconds if the site’s response time varies.

- Run the test: use
npx playwright test tests/infinite-scroll.spec.js. On the first visual assertion run, Playwright can generate reference screenshots; later runs compare against those references. To have the test runner manage baselines, replace the directpage.screenshotcalls with namedexpect(page).toHaveScreenshot(...)assertions and configure screenshot expectations as needed. - Review changes before updating references: inspect the diff and update a baseline only after confirming the change is intended. Regenerating references without review can make a genuine regression the new expected appearance.
Adapt the loading and stopping conditions
- Several items arrive together: wait for the count to exceed the previous count, then capture after the page’s loading signal settles.
- There is a “Load more” button: click it, wait for new items, and capture the resulting state. Do not assume scrolling alone activates it.
- There is an explicit end marker: wait for that marker and capture the end-of-list state instead of scrolling an arbitrary number of times.
- The list has no known end: cap the number of batches or define named checkpoints by content position. Keep the rule identical between baseline creation and later runs.
- Images are lazy-loaded: ensure the relevant items have entered the viewport and wait for their images before taking a checkpoint. An image error should not leave the test waiting forever; the example treats either load or error as settled, so a separate assertion can flag broken images if that matters to the monitoring goal.
Make visual comparisons stable without hiding real changes
Screenshot diffs can change because of browser, operating-system, viewport, device-scale, font, or page-state differences—not only because the site changed. Playwright warns that rendering can vary across environments. Create baselines and run scheduled checks with the same browser build, operating system, viewport, device scale, and relevant test state.
Playwright Test’s toHaveScreenshot() assertion takes screenshots repeatedly until two consecutive captures match, then compares the last capture with its reference. That helps avoid capturing a page while it is still visually settling, but it does not replace waiting for the correct content batch to load. See the PageAssertions API for assertion behavior and options.

- Mask known harmless variation: masks or screenshot styles can exclude regions such as a rotating timestamp or personalized avatar. Keep a record of exclusions and do not mask the list or UI regions whose changes you need to detect.
- Choose tolerance deliberately: pixel-difference settings can reduce noise from harmless rendering variation, but a permissive threshold can also conceal small real regressions. Review diffs rather than tuning thresholds just to eliminate alerts.
- Compare the scope that matches the goal: use viewport checkpoints for list completeness and scrolling behavior; use element captures for a critical component; use a full-page capture only when its limitations are acceptable for that page.
Common problems and fixes
The screenshot shows only the first items
The capture likely happened before the page was actually scrolled, or the site’s loading trigger was not activated. Scroll the viewport through the list, verify that the item count or a loading-state indicator changes, and only then capture. Full-page mode alone may not trigger scroll-dependent loading.
The test times out waiting for another item
The selector may be wrong, the page may append several items rather than exactly one, the network may be slow, or the list may have reached its end. Wait for a count greater than the previous count rather than an exact increment, use the site’s loading or end marker, and set a deliberate maximum batch count.

Screenshots differ on every run
Check that the browser build, operating system, viewport, device scale, fonts, and page state are consistent. Then identify genuinely volatile regions and mask only those. If content itself is personalized or reordered, establish a deterministic test state where possible; otherwise document the limits of the comparison rather than hiding broad portions of the page.
Images are missing or appear after capture
Wait until the target region has been scrolled into view and image loading has settled. Check whether images failed rather than treating “settled” as “successfully loaded.” If fonts affect layout, wait for document.fonts.ready before capturing.

ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request screenshot API and an MCP server for AI agents. Its full-page capture option can load lazy images, but an infinite-scroll page may still require a browser workflow that explicitly scrolls through batches; check that the content you need is present in the returned shot.
For a simple capture, the cURL request is:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com/feed -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for request options. ScreenshotNeo accepts and removes cookie-consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed, and the response indicates the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server includes screenshot, page-information, and PDF-capture tools. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Playwright full-page mode scroll through an infinite list?
No. It captures the full scrollable document, but that does not necessarily trigger the actual scroll events a page uses to load more content. Scroll explicitly and verify the items appeared.
How many checkpoints should I capture?
There is no universal count. Use positions that reflect what you need to monitor—typically the top, middle, lower loaded region, and an end or load-more state when available—and keep the same stopping rule in each run.
