For a prerecorded 1920×1080 progressive video at 50 fps, start with H.264 video, AAC stereo audio, real-time file pacing, and a 2-second keyframe interval. At 50 fps, that interval is a 100-frame GOP. YouTube does not publish a specific H.264 bitrate for 1080p50; 17 Mbps is a practical starting inference from its 1080p60 recommendation, not an official 50 fps setting.

Recommended FFmpeg command for 1080p50

Replace INGEST_URL and STREAM_KEY with the exact values shown for your stream in YouTube Live Control Room. Keep the key private: YouTube treats it like a password.

ffmpeg -re -i input.mp4
  -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -r 50 -pix_fmt yuv420p
  -b:v 17M -maxrate 17M -bufsize 34M
  -g 100 -keyint_min 100 -sc_threshold 0
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 48000 -ac 2
  -f flv "rtmps://INGEST_URL/STREAM_KEY"

This is a template, not a configuration verified on every operating system, FFmpeg build, encoder library, network, or YouTube account. Use RTMPS when the ingest endpoint and your FFmpeg build support it. The FLV muxer is for the RTMP workflow documented by FFmpeg.

What the important options do

  • -re reads the file at its native rate so FFmpeg sends it in real time rather than as fast as it can process it.
  • -c:v libx264 selects H.264 encoding. -r 50 requests a 50 fps output; verify that this matches the source rather than needlessly converting its frame rate.
  • -g 100 sets a 100-frame GOP. At 50 fps, 100 frames equal two seconds. -keyint_min 100 and -sc_threshold 0 are example controls for keeping keyframe spacing regular; confirm behavior with your installed encoder.
  • -b:v 17M, -maxrate 17M, and -bufsize 34M configure a constrained-rate example. YouTube calls for CBR, but do not assume every FFmpeg build and option combination behaves exactly like a platform preset: test the resulting feed.
  • -preset veryfast is an example speed choice, not a universal quality or compatibility requirement. The computer must encode quickly enough to sustain real time.
  • -pix_fmt yuv420p is an example pixel format for a conventional SDR workflow. Check the source color characteristics before converting; do not accidentally turn HDR into SDR without an intentional color workflow.
  • -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ac 2 selects AAC stereo at 128 kbps. Use a source-appropriate sample rate rather than resampling blindly; the command’s 48 kHz setting is an example.

Choosing a bitrate for 1080p50

YouTube’s H.264 guidance lists 14 Mbps for 1080p30 and 17 Mbps for 1080p60, but has no 1080p50 row. The 17 Mbps value in the command is a conservative practical inference from the higher adjacent row, not a bitrate YouTube specifically publishes for 50 fps. The listed figures are YouTube’s current encoder guidance as accessed in 2026; the guidance page does not establish a publication year.

A particular video may need less or more depending on motion, visual detail, and encoder behavior. Your stable upload capacity must support the outgoing stream reliably. Test with footage whose movement and audio resemble the actual program, then check YouTube’s stream-health messages rather than treating the example bitrate as a guarantee.

Set up and test the YouTube stream

  1. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the live stream. Copy its current stream URL and stream key into your encoder configuration. YouTube uses the key with the URL to accept the incoming feed.
  2. Inspect the input file’s frame size, frame rate, audio tracks, and SDR/HDR characteristics. Adjust the command to suit the file; avoid forcing a conversion without a reason.
  3. Start with a private or unlisted test. Confirm that picture and sound arrive, movement looks right, and the stream-health status is acceptable. YouTube recommends testing before going live and checking upload bitrate and stream health.
  4. For the actual event, monitor YouTube’s stream-health messages and verify that your upload connection remains stable.

Keyframe, codec, and audio settings to check

Keyframes and frame rate

YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed 4 seconds. For constant 50 fps output, two seconds works out to 100 frames. YouTube accepts up to 60 fps, so 50 fps is within that stated limit.

Encoding mode and picture settings

YouTube lists CBR and recommends progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, CABAC, square pixels, and Rec. 709 for SDR among its advanced settings. The sample command illustrates a practical libx264 starting point; it does not explicitly set every advanced parameter. Check the output and your encoder’s supported options if you need to control those settings directly.

YouTube also lists H.265/HEVC and AV1, but this example uses H.264 for a straightforward SDR workflow. Codec choice can affect bandwidth and compatibility; verify that the selected encoder and ingest path support the format you intend to send.

Audio

YouTube lists AAC or MP3 and gives 128 kbps stereo and 44.1 kHz stereo as general recommendations. The sample uses AAC stereo at 128 kbps. Match the sample rate to the source when possible; YouTube documents 48 kHz for 5.1 audio, which is distinct from its listed general stereo recommendation.

Troubleshooting common failures

  • No feed appears: Check that the stream URL and key are the current values from Live Control Room, that the key has not been mistyped, and that the selected RTMPS endpoint is supported by the FFmpeg build.
  • Stream health reports instability: Compare the outgoing bitrate with reliable upload capacity. Check YouTube’s health messages and network stability before lowering or changing encode settings.
  • Video stutters or falls behind: Check whether the machine can encode the selected resolution and frame rate in real time. The veryfast preset is only an example; test a suitable encoder speed setting and confirm output behavior.
  • Picture looks wrong: Recheck source dimensions, frame rate, pixel format, and SDR/HDR characteristics. Avoid forcing 50 fps or converting HDR footage without a deliberate workflow.
  • Audio is missing or mismatched: Confirm the input has the expected audio track and that AAC encoding is available in your FFmpeg build. Check channel count and sample rate against the source.
