If a CloudConvert HTML-to-PDF job finishes but its PDF looks blank, first check the exported file itself, then trace the job’s individual tasks and confirm that the source page was available and ready to render. A “finished” status shows task completion, not necessarily that the PDF contains visible content. Work through the checks below in order, changing one variable at a time.
1. Confirm the input and capture operation
For a website URL, check that the job contains a capture-website task, that its URL is correct, and that output_format is pdf. CloudConvert’s documented website-capture example exports the capture task’s result with an export/url task. For supplied HTML, verify that the intended HTML file—not an empty or unrelated file—is passed into the supported HTML-to-PDF workflow.
Use CloudConvert’s Job Builder to generate a payload for the particular input and output combination. Its operation reference identifies the capture operation and its required fields, as well as configurable engine, engine version, and timeout settings: capture-website operation.
2. Check whether the page has content when the renderer captures it
A URL can load successfully while its meaningful content is still absent. Some pages add content after JavaScript runs or after an API request completes. Compare what appears immediately on load with what appears after the page has settled. CloudConvert says its headless Chrome-based HTML-to-PDF service can wait for a custom CSS selector to appear before generating the PDF.

Choose a selector that identifies actual rendered content, rather than a generic page shell that appears before the content. Confirm the current option name and syntax in the live Job Builder or operation options before editing a job payload; the exact selector-wait payload syntax is not established here.
For isolation, try a small static HTML page containing visible text and no external resources. If it produces a visible PDF while the full page does not, that points toward a difference in the page’s scripts, timing, or dependencies. It is a diagnostic clue, not proof of a particular CloudConvert defect.
3. Verify that CloudConvert can access the page and its dependencies
Test the URL as the conversion service will encounter it, not only in your logged-in browser. Look for redirects, sign-in requirements, session-dependent content, and images, stylesheets, or scripts loaded from external hosts. A page that depends on your browser’s existing session may not expose the same content to a remote renderer.
CloudConvert documents custom Authorization headers for protected resources. Check its current options and provide the necessary authorization when applicable. Do not assume that a successful browser visit proves the service has equivalent access; the available documentation does not establish every cookie or session-handling behavior.

4. Inspect every task, not just the job status
CloudConvert API v2 jobs group named tasks—often an import, a conversion or capture, and an export. Inspect each task’s operation, status, result files, and any error details to find where the workflow stopped. Documented task statuses include waiting, processing, finished, and error. By default, a job fails if a task fails, unless that task is configured to ignore an error.
A finished capture or job is not visual confirmation. Download the result returned by the export task and open or render that file independently. Check its page count and whether the page actually contains visible content. This separates a task-workflow problem from a PDF that was produced but rendered blank.
CloudConvert supports asynchronous job status checks and webhooks. A timeout in your client while waiting for a long-running request does not, by itself, show that the conversion failed; check the job’s status through the documented workflow. See the API quickstart and job documentation.
5. Change capture and layout settings methodically
Once the source, timing, and access checks are complete, test configuration changes one at a time. Depending on your input, compare URL capture with supplied HTML, review the selected engine and version when alternatives are available, and test the selector-readiness option if content is delayed. Record the change and inspect the resulting PDF after each run.

CloudConvert documents page dimensions, margins, zoom, and custom headers and footers among its PDF settings. These are worth testing when content exists but is clipped, off-page, or difficult to see—for example, if styles make text white on a white background. They are not established fixes for a genuinely empty document.
6. Distinguish blank output from API errors
An invalid job payload and a visually empty PDF are different problems. CloudConvert documents a 422 response for invalid data and dynamic rate limiting on some endpoints; a 429 response includes a Retry-After value. Resolve those responses as API or request-flow issues, then inspect the exported PDF separately if a file was produced. See the API introduction.
