For a stereo YouTube Live music stream, set audio to 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps, using AAC or MP3. YouTube’s encoder guidance specifies 44.1 kHz for stereo. Its Live Streaming API also lists 48 kHz as a recommended sample rate, so keeping 48 kHz is reasonable if that is already consistent across your production chain; YouTube’s guidance does not establish that either rate sounds better.
Recommended audio settings for stereo music
| Setting | Recommendation | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Sample rate | 44.1 kHz | YouTube’s encoder settings table specifies 44.1 kHz for stereo audio. The Live Streaming API also lists 48 kHz as recommended. |
| Audio bitrate | 128 kbps | YouTube’s encoder guidance lists 128 kbps for stereo. |
| Audio codec | AAC or MP3 | Both are listed for encoder streaming in YouTube’s guidance. |
| Delivery protocol | RTMPS | YouTube recommends RTMPS for encoder delivery. |

44.1 kHz or 48 kHz: which should you choose?
Choose 44.1 kHz when configuring a stereo stream from scratch if you want to follow YouTube’s encoder-specific recommendation. Choose 48 kHz if your existing audio production chain already runs consistently at 48 kHz and changing rates would add unnecessary conversion or mismatches. The YouTube Live Streaming API lists both 44.1 kHz and 48 kHz as recommended rates: LiveStreams API audio settings.
The official guidance cited here does not provide a listening test or evidence that one of these rates produces a perceptible advantage for viewers. Treat this as a compatibility and consistency choice, not a quality upgrade. Keep the source, encoder, and any backup stream aligned to the same rate where possible.
If you are streaming 5.1 audio
YouTube’s encoder table specifies 48 kHz and 384 kbps for 5.1 surround sound. It lists AAC as the supported codec for 5.1 over RTMP/RTMPS. These are different settings from the stereo recommendation; do not apply the stereo bitrate or codec options to a 5.1 profile without checking the encoder guidance.

What changes—and does not change—for a 24/7 stream
Plan archives around the 12-hour limitation
Sample rate does not determine whether a long broadcast is archived. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. YouTube recommends keeping a local recording as a backup. If you need a dependable archive, plan stream segments and local recording rather than relying on one continuous 24-hour broadcast. See YouTube’s archive guidance and its encoder setup instructions.
Expect possible DVR limits on long broadcasts
YouTube also warns that DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. This is separate from audio sample rate; changing from 44.1 to 48 kHz will not resolve the DVR limitation. Details are in YouTube’s DVR guidance.

Set up and check the stream
- Choose the audio profile. For stereo, configure 44.1 kHz, 128 kbps, and AAC or MP3. If the entire existing chain already uses 48 kHz, it is a supported API-recommended alternative; avoid mixing rates unnecessarily.
- Match backup audio settings. If you use primary and backup streams, configure the same audio sample rate on both. The Live Streaming API documents an error when their audio sample rates differ.
- Deliver over RTMPS. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encoder delivery. Configure the encoder with your YouTube stream details following YouTube’s encoder setup steps.
- Test representative material before going live. YouTube advises testing with audio and movement representative of the planned broadcast. Check stream health and respond to any alerts rather than assuming a successful connection means the audio configuration is correct.
- Make a separate archive plan. If you need a complete recording, arrange local recording and account for YouTube’s stated limits on automatic archiving and DVR for streams exceeding 12 hours.
