You can stream a 4K prerecorded video as a 1080p YouTube Live broadcast without first converting the file: play it in streaming software such as OBS and set the software’s outgoing resolution to 1920×1080. The video file remains 4K; the software scales the live feed sent to YouTube. Set the encoder to match your chosen frame rate, codec, bitrate, and keyframe interval, then test the complete playback before going live.
What “downscale to 1080p” means
Your 4K file is the source; YouTube receives the streaming software’s encoded output. With a 1080p output canvas, the software reduces the image to 1920×1080 as it plays. You do not need an offline conversion unless you specifically want a separate 1080p file. YouTube’s Live Control Room setup uses the encoder’s resolution, frame rate, and bitrate, and YouTube transcodes the live stream into formats for viewers. YouTube’s live encoder settings are the relevant ingestion guidance.
Set OBS to output 1080p
- Open Settings > Video. Leave Base (Canvas) Resolution at the resolution you use to compose the scene if you want to retain that workspace. Set Output (Scaled) Resolution to 1920×1080.
- Choose a downscale filter. Bilinear uses the least system resources; Lanczos uses more resources and can preserve more apparent detail. Bicubic is another option. There is no universally best filter: compare fine detail and moving footage on your own machine. These filter and performance notes come from OBS-related performance guidance hosted on a GitHub Wiki mirror, so exact labels or behavior can vary by OBS version. OBS performance guidance.
- Check the composition and aspect ratio. A 16:9 4K source fits 1920×1080 without cropping. If the source has a different aspect ratio, decide whether to crop it or preserve the full frame with letterboxing; avoid stretching it to fill the canvas.
- Add the prerecorded video. Add a media playback source in your streaming software, select the file, and verify that the intended video and audio tracks play together. The software’s playback source should feed the scene that is sent to YouTube.
- Set the output frame rate. Match the source’s frame rate where practical, or choose the cadence you want to deliver. Use 30 fps for a 30 fps program; choose 60 fps only when the source and desired motion justify it and your upload and encoder can sustain the higher data rate.
Choose YouTube Live encoder settings
YouTube’s live encoder guidance, accessed October 3, 2026, recommends the following bitrates for 1080p ingestion. These are starting points for the stated codec and frame rate, not guaranteed requirements for every program.
| Output | Codec | YouTube recommended bitrate | YouTube minimum bitrate |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | H.264 | 14 Mbps | 5 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | AV1 or H.265 (HEVC) | 10 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | H.264 | 17 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | AV1 or H.265 (HEVC) | 12 Mbps | 4 Mbps |

Frame rate and codec trade-offs
- 30 versus 60 fps: 60 fps carries more motion information and YouTube recommends a higher bitrate for it. A 60 fps setting does not automatically improve a 30 fps source.
- H.264 versus H.265 or AV1: YouTube supports all three and gives different recommended bitrates for them. Use the codec your encoder supports reliably; do not select one based on bitrate alone.
- Upload capacity: Run an upload speed test and make sure the connection can sustain the selected stream bitrate. Other network use and connection fluctuations can reduce the margin available to the broadcast.
Protocol, keyframes, and audio
- Protocol: YouTube supports RTMP and RTMPS and recommends RTMPS, the encrypted extension of RTMP.
- Rate control: Use constant bitrate (CBR), as YouTube recommends.
- Keyframes: Set a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds.
- Audio: YouTube supports AAC or MP3. Its advanced recommendations list stereo at 128 Kbps and a 44.1 kHz stereo sample rate.
- SDR color: YouTube specifies Rec. 709 and 8-bit depth for SDR.
For the current protocol, rate-control, keyframe, audio, and color guidance, see YouTube Help’s encoder settings.
Connect OBS to YouTube and test playback
- Get the stream key from YouTube Studio. In YouTube Studio, open the live streaming setup and copy the stream key for the broadcast. Treat it like a password: do not show or share it. Menu labels and setup screens can change, so follow the current Live Control Room prompts.
- Enter the key in your streaming software. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service if available, and enter the key. If the selected service or workflow requires a server URL, use the value provided by YouTube rather than a URL copied from an unrelated guide.
- Confirm the encoder settings. Verify 1920×1080 output, your selected frame rate and codec, CBR, the bitrate for that combination, and a two-second keyframe interval. Use RTMPS when your encoder offers it for the YouTube connection.
- Run a representative test before the event. YouTube advises testing with audio and movement similar to the planned stream. Play the actual file and confirm that it starts at the intended point, reaches its end as expected, and stays synchronized with its audio. Check YouTube’s stream health and messages during the test and broadcast. YouTube’s testing and monitoring guidance.
Troubleshoot common downscaling and live-stream problems
- The YouTube preview is not 1080p: Check OBS Settings > Video and confirm Output (Scaled) Resolution is 1920×1080. Also confirm the stream’s encoder output settings and the resolution shown in YouTube’s live setup.
- The image is stretched, cropped, or has black bars: Compare the source and canvas aspect ratios. Preserve the source ratio, then choose a deliberate crop or letterbox treatment for a non-16:9 file.
- The stream buffers or reports poor health: Check that upload capacity can sustain the configured bitrate, reduce competing network use, and test again. If the connection cannot sustain the recommended bitrate, a lower stable setting may be preferable to an unstable target, while remaining mindful of YouTube’s listed minimums.
- The picture stutters or the computer struggles: Downscaling can reduce encoding workload compared with encoding the output at 4K. Lowering frame rate also reduces the number of frames processed. Hardware encoders such as Intel Quick Sync, AMD AMF, and NVIDIA NVENC may lower CPU load, though OBS performance guidance notes a possible quality trade-off at a given bitrate compared with x264. Test on the actual machine instead of assuming one encoder or filter is best. OBS performance guidance.
- The file plays but the stream has no sound: Check the media source’s audio track and the scene’s audio routing and meters, then repeat the test with the same playback path you will use live.
- Audio and picture drift apart: Test the complete file before the event and check synchronization at several points, not just at the beginning. If drift appears, inspect playback and audio settings in the selected software and retest.
- YouTube does not accept the connection: Recheck the stream key and current Live Control Room setup, verify the encoder’s protocol and codec choices, and review YouTube’s displayed messages. Do not publish or expose the stream key.
Check rights and YouTube Live rules before broadcasting
Having a video file does not by itself establish permission to broadcast its music, footage, or other material. Confirm that you own the relevant rights or have permission covering a public live broadcast, including music and any embedded third-party content. Review YouTube’s current copyright and live-stream policies before scheduling a program, especially if it contains licensed, reused, or otherwise third-party material. A technical test does not establish that content is eligible to remain live or on YouTube.
