What’s actually slowing this PC down?

For a YouTube Live playlist with small, important text, start at 1080p if your connection can sustain the required bitrate with headroom. YouTube’s recommended H.264 ingest bitrate is 14 Mbps at 1080p30 versus 8 Mbps at 720p30; with AV1 or H.265/HEVC, it is 10 Mbps versus 6 Mbps. If your upload is inconsistent, use 720p and make the text larger rather than risking an unstable 1080p stream. The text-legibility recommendation is a practical inference from resolution, not the result of a YouTube text-readability study.
1080p or 720p: which should you choose?
Choose 1080p when fine labels, titles, or interface details need to remain readable and your upload connection can reliably support the matching bitrate. A 1080p source contains more pixels than a 720p source, giving small text more detail to work with. That does not guarantee legibility: text size, contrast, layout, player size, and viewers’ playback conditions also matter.
Choose 720p when the text is sufficiently large and clear at the likely player size, or when your connection cannot reliably sustain the 1080p target. A stable 720p stream is preferable to a 1080p stream that repeatedly loses health because the available upload capacity is inadequate.
YouTube’s official live guidance specifies bitrate by codec, resolution, and frame rate. These are live-ingest recommendations, not a universal minimum for readable text. YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate recommendations also note that streams are transcoded into multiple viewer output formats, so viewers are not guaranteed to receive the ingest resolution.

Recommended YouTube Live bitrates
The figures below are YouTube’s live encoder recommendations. Use the column matching the codec actually sent by your encoder, not merely the codec you intended to select.
| Source setting | AV1/H.265 minimum | AV1/H.265 recommended | H.264 minimum | H.264 recommended |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 4 Mbps | 10 Mbps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 2 Mbps | 6 Mbps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 4 Mbps | 12 Mbps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 2 Mbps | 6 Mbps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
For a text-heavy playlist, 30 fps is often a sensible starting point if the content is mostly static slides, titles, or screen layouts. Use 60 fps when the material has movement that benefits from smoother motion and the connection can sustain the higher target where applicable. The bitrate table shows that 1080p60 needs more bitrate than 1080p30; 720p’s listed target is the same at 30 and 60 fps for each codec in YouTube’s guidance.

Leave enough upload bandwidth
Your upload capacity must cover the total stream bitrate, with room for variation and other network use. YouTube recommends leaving 20% beyond the total streaming bitrate and warns that shared network use can reduce the bandwidth available to an individual stream. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
- For an H.264 1080p30 stream set to the recommended 14 Mbps, plan for at least 16.8 Mbps of available upload capacity to leave 20% headroom.
- For H.264 720p30 at 8 Mbps, plan for at least 9.6 Mbps of available upload capacity.
- If multiple streams, video calls, backups, or other users share the connection, allow for their upload use too. A speed-test result is a snapshot; it does not guarantee sustained capacity during the live event.
These examples apply the 20% headroom recommendation to the listed stream bitrate; they are planning figures, not additional YouTube bitrate settings.

Set and verify the encoder settings
In your encoder, select the output resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate appropriate to the target row above. YouTube’s current live guidance specifies constant bitrate (CBR), supports up to 60 fps, and recommends a 2-second keyframe frequency, not exceeding 4 seconds. The exact controls and labels depend on the encoder you use, so confirm what it is actually sending. YouTube says it detects the encoder settings chosen.
- Choose the resolution and frame rate. Use 1080p30 or 720p30 for a mostly static text playlist unless smoother motion is important.
- Choose the codec and target bitrate. Match the recommended value for that codec, resolution, and frame rate. Do not treat one codec’s target as interchangeable with another’s.
- Set CBR and keyframes. Use constant bitrate and a 2-second keyframe interval; do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Check the stream preview and health. Confirm the incoming stream is using the intended settings before relying on it live.
Test text at the size viewers will see it
YouTube recommends testing before the event, using representative audio and movement, checking the preview, and monitoring stream health. For this particular playlist, also inspect the smallest important text at approximately the player size your audience is likely to use. That text-specific check is a practical application of the general testing guidance, not a published YouTube test protocol.

- 【Plug and Play】No driver or external power supply required, true PnP. Once plugged in, the device is identified automatically as a webcam. Detect input and adjust output automatically. Won't occupy CPU, optional audio capture. No freeze with correct setting.
- 【Compatible with Multiple Systems】suitable for Windows and Mac OS. High speed USB 3.0 technology and superior low latency technology makes it easier for you to transmit live streaming to Twitch, Youtube, Facebook, Twitter, OBS, Potplayer and VLC.
- 【HDMI LOOP-OUT】Based on the high-speed USB 3.0 technology, it can capture one single channel HD HDMI video signal. There is no delay when you are playing game live.
- 【Support Mic-in for Commentary】Rybozen capture card has microphone input and you can use it to add external commentary when playing a game. Please note: it only accepts 3.5mm TRS standard microphone headset.
- Run an upload speed test at the location and time you expect to stream. Leave the recommended headroom and account for shared network use.
- Start a private or otherwise suitable test stream using the intended resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate.
- Read the smallest essential labels or titles in the preview and on a typical viewing screen. If they are difficult to read, increase their size or contrast, simplify the layout, or move to 1080p if bandwidth permits.
- Include representative movement and audio in the test, then check stream health while the test runs.
- During the live event, continue monitoring stream health. YouTube may deliver transcoded output formats, so test the actual viewing experience where possible rather than assuming every viewer sees the ingest resolution.
Do not confuse live bitrate with upload bitrate
YouTube publishes separate encoding recommendations for uploaded videos and live streams. For SDR uploads, its guidance lists 8 Mbps for 1080p at standard frame rate and 12 Mbps at high frame rate; for 720p it lists 5 Mbps and 7.5 Mbps respectively. Those numbers are for video uploads, not live ingest. Use the live recommendations in the table above when configuring a YouTube Live encoder. See YouTube’s upload encoding settings.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a continuous pre-recorded YouTube playlist rather than a camera-based broadcast, StreamNeo keeps the stream running from the cloud after you upload the video or build a playlist.
