If your source is 1080i/50, deinterlace it to progressive before streaming; 1080i/50 describes 25 interlaced frames represented by 50 fields per second, not 50 progressive frames.
Recommended YouTube Live settings for 25 fps
YouTube Live supports frame rates up to 60 fps, so 25 fps is within its stated limit. YouTube’s upload guidance lists 25 fps as a common rate and advises retaining the recording’s frame rate, which supports keeping a 25p production at 25p rather than converting it to 30 or 50 fps. That upload guidance is not a live bitrate specification. YouTube’s live encoder settings and upload encoding recommendations address these points separately.
| Setting | Recommended starting point |
|---|---|
| Frame rate | 25 fps progressive when the source is 25p |
| Scan type | Progressive; deinterlace interlaced footage before sending it |
| Bitrate | No dedicated 25 fps value is published in YouTube’s live bitrate table. If you need a starting estimate, use the 30 fps value for the same resolution and codec as a proxy, then validate it in a test stream. |
| Rate control | CBR |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds |
| Protocol | RTMPS recommended |
| SDR color and geometry | Rec. 709, square pixels, progressive scan |
YouTube’s live bitrate table has entries for 30 fps and 60 fps at supported resolutions, but no 25 fps row. Do not present a 30 fps bitrate as an official 25 fps recommendation. The separate upload recommendations group 24, 25, and 30 fps for standard-frame-rate uploads; those figures are not live ingest specifications.
Check whether the source is 25p or 1080i/50
25p footage
With native 25p material, configure the encoder for 25 progressive frames per second. Converting solely to match another nominal frame rate can change motion cadence without improving the source.

1080i/50 footage
Deinterlace 1080i/50 to progressive before streaming. In this notation, the image is carried as 25 interlaced frames per second, each split into fields, for 50 fields per second. It does not mean 50 full progressive frames each second. The technical distinction is explained in a document hosted by TRAI; the passage’s original author and publication year are not established. TRAI-hosted technical document, page 49.
Choose a deinterlacing method that preserves motion as cleanly as your encoder allows, then inspect moving subjects for combing or judder in a representative test. Do not label 50 interlaced fields as 50p.

Set up and validate the encoder
- Confirm the source format. Check the production or capture settings to establish whether the material is 25p or interlaced 1080i/50. Match the encoder to the actual source rather than guessing from a “50” label.
- Set progressive output. Use 25 fps progressive for 25p. For 1080i/50, deinterlace to progressive before encoding and verify the output scan type.
- Choose codec and rate control. YouTube’s live settings list H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 and recommend CBR. Use a codec supported by your encoder and workflow.
- Set keyframes. Set a 2-second keyframe interval. YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds.
- Configure transport and SDR color. Use RTMPS where available. For SDR, set Rec. 709 and square pixel aspect ratio, with progressive scan.
- Choose a cautious bitrate. Since YouTube publishes no 25 fps live row, treat the matching-resolution, matching-codec 30 fps recommendation only as a proxy starting point. Your sustainable upload capacity and test results matter more than selecting a high nominal bitrate.
- Run a representative test stream. Include audio and movement similar to the real program. Check the image, audio, and YouTube stream health before relying on the configuration for an event.
What to compare when choosing encoder settings
Evaluate settings by whether they preserve the source cadence, how well interlaced material is deinterlaced, the chosen resolution and codec, sustainable upload capacity, and motion quality in a representative test. YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple viewer playback formats, so the incoming encoder setting is not the only rendition viewers may receive.
Troubleshoot common frame-rate problems
- Motion looks uneven after changing frame rate: Restore the source’s native cadence—25p for 25p material—and test again. Converting to a different nominal rate can alter motion timing.
- Fine horizontal comb-like lines appear during movement: The source may still be interlaced. Deinterlace 1080i/50 before sending progressive output.
- The stream buffers or loses stability: Reduce bitrate until the upstream connection can sustain it consistently. A high target bitrate does not help if the connection cannot carry it reliably.
- The stream does not meet the expected ingest settings: Check CBR, the 2-second keyframe interval (never more than 4 seconds), codec compatibility, and RTMPS configuration; then run another test and monitor stream health.
- Audio is missing or motion differs from the real program: Repeat the test with representative audio and movement rather than relying on a static or silent test clip.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos playing as a 24/7 YouTube stream, StreamNeo can loop them from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; the stream plays your uploaded video, not a live camera feed.
