H.265 (HEVC) is supported for YouTube Live over RTMP and RTMPS, so the codec alone does not explain a “Bad video settings” warning. The label can cover different faults—including open GOP, an excessively long keyframe interval, an invalid container, or multiple video streams. Find the detailed health message or issue type first; then check the corresponding setting in the encoder’s actual output.

What the warning means—and what it does not

YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 as supported video codecs for RTMP/RTMPS ingestion. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the connection. Support for HEVC does not guarantee that every encoder’s output is configured correctly, but it does mean that switching away from H.265 should not be the first assumption.

“Bad video settings” is a summary, not a complete diagnosis. YouTube’s health reference associates video-setting alerts with several issue types, including openGop, gopSizeLong or gopSizeOver, badContainer, multipleVideoStreams, and videoCodec. Other health issues can concern resolution, bitrate, audio, or a mismatch between primary and backup streams. The detailed message tells you which branch to investigate.

YouTube’s encoder settings guidance and its Live API health-status reference describe the supported settings and issue categories. The specific fault cannot be identified from the short warning alone.

Find the specific health issue

  1. In YouTube Studio, open Create > Go live to enter Live Control Room, then inspect the stream’s health status and expand any warning to read its details. Copy the complete message, not just “Bad video settings.”
  2. If you use the YouTube Live API, inspect the stream’s status.healthStatus.configurationIssues[] entries. YouTube exposes issue types, descriptions, and severity there. Match the issue type to the encoder setting before changing anything.
  3. Record the encoder make and model and its software or firmware version, along with the selected codec and profile, container, GOP mode and interval, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, audio configuration, and any backup-stream settings. These details help distinguish an encoder-output problem from a connection or backup-configuration mismatch.

Check GOP structure and keyframe interval

For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube recommends a keyframe every two seconds and says the interval should not exceed four seconds. Its health guidance also identifies open GOP as unsupported. Check both the GOP structure and the interval: a two-second interval does not by itself prove that the GOP is closed.

  • If the issue is openGop, configure closed GOP in the encoder, if that option is available.
  • If the issue is gopSizeLong or gopSizeOver, set the keyframe interval to two seconds where possible, and no longer than four seconds.
  • Verify the emitted stream rather than relying only on a preset name. Encoder interfaces differ, and a displayed setting may not fully describe the output.

Verify the actual codec, container, and video tracks

Confirm that the encoded bitstream is HEVC and that the emitted container and stream tracks are valid for the ingestion configuration you are using. A codec selection in an encoder menu does not rule out an unexpected output format, an incompatible container, or more than one video stream.

  • videoCodec: Check the actual encoded codec against YouTube’s current RTMP/RTMPS supported list. HEVC is listed, but a different or incorrectly emitted codec can still trigger a codec issue.
  • badContainer: Check the container being sent, not just the file or profile selected in the interface. Consult the encoder’s output details if the container is unclear.
  • multipleVideoStreams: Confirm the outgoing feed contains one video stream unless your intended configuration specifically requires otherwise.

Match resolution, frame rate, and bitrate to the codec

YouTube detects stream settings automatically by default in Live Control Room. If you set them manually, use the current table for the actual codec, resolution, and frame rate. The following are YouTube’s current encoder recommendations, accessed October 3, 2026; bitrate values are Mbps.

Output AV1 / H.265 minimum AV1 / H.265 recommended H.264 minimum H.264 recommended
1080p at 30 fps 4 Mbps 10 Mbps 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 4 Mbps 12 Mbps 6 Mbps 17 Mbps
2160p (4K) at 60 fps 10 Mbps 35 Mbps 14 Mbps 50 Mbps

These figures illustrate why it is important not to apply H.264 bitrate recommendations to HEVC automatically. YouTube’s table includes recommendations for more formats and frame rates; check the current encoder settings table for your exact target. RTMP/RTMPS encoder settings support up to 60 fps. YouTube also specifies constant bitrate (CBR) encoding and recommends testing upload capacity; its guidance says, “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate.”

Check audio and primary/backup consistency

A warning shown alongside video problems does not prove that video is the only issue. YouTube documents separate audio-related alerts, and its health reference includes primary/backup mismatches. Check the full health list rather than stopping at the first short label.

  • Compare primary and backup stream codec, profile, resolution, frame rate, keyframe interval, audio settings, and bitrate where the health message identifies a mismatch.
  • Check audio codec, sample rate, and channel configuration against YouTube’s current encoder guidance and the detailed alert.
  • Resolve each reported issue independently; changing video settings will not necessarily clear a separate audio or backup-stream warning.

For HDR, use YouTube’s HDR-specific setup

Do not apply SDR assumptions to an HDR stream. YouTube’s current live HDR guidance uses H.265/HEVC and 10-bit HDR settings; Control Room setup permits RTMP(S) or HLS. For OBS, YouTube specifies version 30.1 or newer, a hardware HEVC encoder, Main 10, P010 (4:2:0), and Rec. 2100 PQ or HLG. SDR recommendations include Rec. 709 and 8-bit settings.

HLS has its own protocol-specific requirements; consult YouTube’s HLS ingestion documentation if you are using HLS rather than RTMP/RTMPS.

Test the corrected stream before the event

  1. Apply only the changes indicated by the detailed health issue, then start a test stream with representative motion and audio.
  2. Watch Live Control Room’s health messages while the encoder is sending. Confirm the warning clears and check for any new issue types.
  3. If the problem remains, compare the actual outgoing settings with the encoder’s configured values and keep the full health message, encoder version, and stream configuration together when seeking support.

Common causes and fixes

Health issue or symptom What to check Practical next step
openGop GOP structure Use closed GOP.
gopSizeLong or gopSizeOver Keyframe cadence Use a two-second interval if possible; do not exceed four seconds.
videoCodec Codec actually emitted Verify the bitstream uses a codec supported for your ingestion protocol; HEVC is supported for RTMP/RTMPS.
badContainer Outgoing container Inspect the emitted container and confirm it matches the intended ingestion configuration.
multipleVideoStreams Number of video tracks Check the outgoing feed and remove unintended additional video streams.
Resolution, bitrate, or frame-rate alert Actual output versus the codec-specific YouTube table Match the target format to YouTube’s current recommendations; do not assume the H.264 column applies to H.265.
Primary/backup mismatch Codec, profile, resolution, frame rate, keyframes, audio, and bitrate on both feeds Align the settings YouTube identifies as inconsistent.

Because the encoder model, output settings, and full health message are not available here, no single setting can be identified as the cause. The warning by itself is not evidence that H.265 is unsupported or that switching to H.264 will fix the stream.
