Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →For a stereo music playlist on YouTube Live, set the encoder’s audio bitrate to 128 Kbps and sample rate to 44.1 kHz. For a genuine 5.1 surround stream, YouTube recommends 384 Kbps at 48 kHz; with RTMP or RTMPS, use AAC because that protocol’s 5.1 support requires it. These are YouTube’s recommended incoming encoder settings—not a promise that every viewer receives identical audio encoding.
Recommended audio settings for a YouTube music playlist
| Audio format | Bitrate | Sample rate | Codec and notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stereo | 128 Kbps | 44.1 kHz | RTMP/RTMPS accepts AAC or MP3; YouTube gives the same stereo recommendation for a playlist stream as for other stereo streams. |
| 5.1 surround | 384 Kbps | 48 kHz | RTMP/RTMPS requires AAC for 5.1. Use these settings only when your source and delivery chain actually carry 5.1 audio. |
YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance does not specify a different audio bitrate for an audio playlist paired with a static image. It also does not establish that raising the bitrate above its recommendation improves the audio viewers receive. YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for different devices and network conditions, so the encoder bitrate is an ingest setting.
Choose codec and protocol together
RTMP or RTMPS
For RTMP/RTMPS ingest, YouTube lists AAC and MP3 audio. For ordinary stereo music, use the recommended 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz settings. If sending 5.1, AAC is required by YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS guidance.
HLS
YouTube’s HLS guidance lists AAC, AC3, and EAC3. It repeats the recommendations of 128 Kbps at 44.1 kHz for stereo and 384 Kbps at 48 kHz for 5.1. HLS sends video in segments and has higher latency than RTMP, so consider that trade-off if low delay matters.

Set up and validate the stream
- Confirm the channel format. Use stereo unless your music source and complete audio chain are prepared for 5.1. Selecting a 5.1 setting does not create surround sound from a stereo file.
- Set the encoder audio values. For stereo, enter 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz. For actual 5.1, enter 384 Kbps and 48 kHz; if using RTMP/RTMPS, select AAC.
- Check the ingest protocol’s supported codec. Use AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS stereo; use AAC for 5.1 over RTMP/RTMPS. For HLS, select from AAC, AC3, or EAC3 as supported by the encoder.
- Test before the planned stream. YouTube recommends a test using audio and movement similar to the intended broadcast. Check the stream health indicators while testing rather than relying only on the encoder’s local preview.
- Leave network headroom. YouTube recommends available upload bandwidth with 20% headroom. This is network capacity above the stream’s total outgoing bitrate, not extra audio bitrate.
YouTube recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production-value events, but dedicated hardware is not a requirement for the recommended stereo audio setting.
Music rights can affect whether a playlist stays live
Correct bitrate settings do not grant permission to broadcast music. YouTube says all live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content. When a match is identified, YouTube may display a placeholder and warn the streamer; continued use can temporarily interrupt or terminate the stream. A rights holder that has licensed content for use may still need to add the channel to its Content ID allowlist for the live stream to proceed.

YouTube’s livestream terms state that providers represent they hold the necessary rights for live content, including music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public-performance licenses), and other royalty participants. YouTube’s Creator Music usage details say Creator Music tracks cannot be used in live streams under those terms. These platform rules do not determine whether a particular license covers your planned use, territories, or stream; verify the rights for the specific recordings before going live.

Troubleshooting common audio problems
- Audio sounds distorted or drops out: Check that the source itself is clean, confirm the encoder is using a supported codec for the selected protocol, and run another test while monitoring stream health. The recommendation is an ingest target, not a fix for a damaged source or unstable connection.
- The stream reports a protocol or codec issue: Verify that the selected codec matches the ingest protocol. In particular, RTMP/RTMPS 5.1 requires AAC; HLS has a different listed codec set.
- Viewers report inconsistent playback quality: YouTube transcodes the incoming live stream for different devices and networks. The recommended encoder audio bitrate does not guarantee identical playback encoding or results for every viewer.
- A playlist is interrupted despite valid encoder settings: Check YouTube’s live-stream copyright notifications and confirm the rights holder has allowlisted the channel if required. A bitrate change cannot resolve a rights match.
- The stream becomes unstable under load: Recheck available upload capacity against the full outgoing stream bitrate and preserve the recommended 20% headroom; test with conditions similar to the intended stream.
