Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →For a pre-recorded 4K/30 video sent through an encoder as a YouTube Live stream, use 42 Mbps for H.264 or 30 Mbps for H.265/HEVC or AV1, following YouTube’s current live ingest recommendations. The right figure depends on the codec being sent to YouTube; it is not determined by the source file alone.
Choose the live bitrate for the codec you send
YouTube Help lists different recommended bitrates for 4K/2160p at 30 fps by live ingest codec. These are platform recommendations, not universal encoding rules or guarantees of identical image quality.
| Ingest video codec | Recommended bitrate | Listed minimum |
|---|---|---|
| H.264 | 42 Mbps | 11 Mbps |
| H.265/HEVC | 30 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| AV1 | 30 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
Use the row for the codec your encoder actually sends to YouTube. A file encoded in one codec may be decoded and re-encoded by a live workflow, so the source file’s codec does not by itself establish the ingest codec.
Do not confuse a live stream with a regular upload
If you upload a finished 4K video as a normal YouTube video rather than sending it through a live encoder, YouTube’s separate upload guidance recommends 35–45 Mbps for 2160p at 24, 25, or 30 fps. That is an upload-encoding recommendation, not the live ingest setting. Set the workflow first, then use its corresponding table: YouTube live encoder settings or YouTube recommended upload encoding settings.

Set the other encoder options for 4K/30
- Protocol: YouTube lists RTMP and RTMPS; it recommends RTMPS, the secure extension to RTMP.
- Rate control: Use constant bitrate (CBR).
- Keyframes: Set a 2-second keyframe interval and do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Frame rate: Keep within YouTube’s listed ceiling of 60 fps; for this case, set 30 fps.
- Latency: At 4K/2160, low-latency mode is unavailable in YouTube’s documented settings; the stream uses normal latency.
For SDR, YouTube lists Rec. 709 and 8-bit. For HDR, its documented settings identify H.265/HEVC and 10-bit, and do not support AV1 for HDR. Confirm that the encoder and ingest route support the codec and format you intend to send.
Allow enough stable upload bandwidth
The relevant connection speed is reliable outbound upload capacity, not advertised download speed. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend leaving 20% headroom above the total stream bitrate, and warn that the total bitrate cannot exceed available upload bandwidth. At a 42 Mbps video setting, 20% arithmetic headroom is about 50.4 Mbps before audio, other network traffic, and fluctuations. This is a planning calculation from YouTube’s margin, not a separate YouTube-published threshold.

Shared network use or interruptions can reduce the capacity available to the encoder. Check YouTube’s streaming tips and test the actual connection and stream rather than relying on the plan’s advertised maximum.
Test and monitor before relying on the stream
- Run an upload speed test from the network and location the encoder will use.
- Configure the encoder for the intended ingest codec, resolution, frame rate, CBR bitrate, and 2-second keyframe interval.
- Before the event, run a test with audio and motion similar to the finished video. Confirm YouTube receives 2160p at 30 fps and monitor stream health.
- If the stream reports instability, first reduce competing network traffic or use a more reliable connection; then lower the video bitrate while staying at or above YouTube’s listed minimum for that codec. Retest before going live.
