In OBS, open Settings > Video and check Output (Scaled) Resolution and Common FPS Value. Set the output to 3840×2160 and the frame rate to 60—or 59.94 if that matches your source and workflow. If either option is missing, first identify whether the problem is an OBS setting, a capture-device limit, or a performance or YouTube-ingest issue; buying a graphics card is not the first step.

Check OBS’s 4K and 60fps output controls

OBS separates the scene canvas from the video it sends to YouTube. The canvas is the workspace for arranging and compositing sources; the output resolution determines the dimensions of the stream or recording. Setting the canvas to 3840×2160 alone does not guarantee a 4K stream.

  1. In OBS, open Settings > Video.
  2. Check Base (Canvas) Resolution and Output (Scaled) Resolution. Set Output (Scaled) Resolution to 3840×2160 for 4K output. Choose a canvas size appropriate to your scenes; it can differ from the output size.
  3. Set Common FPS Value to 60, or choose 59.94 if your source and workflow use that rate.
  4. Apply the settings and verify the stream’s actual output in a test broadcast. The canvas setting is not a substitute for checking the output resolution.

OBS documents 60-fps streaming as substantially more demanding than 30 fps. If the fields are present but the stream stutters, treat that as a performance problem rather than a missing-setting problem.

If 4K or 60fps is missing, check the source first

Inspect a camera or capture device

For an OBS Video Capture Device source, open its properties and review Resolution/FPS Type, Resolution, and FPS. The available modes depend on the device. OBS notes that an unsupported resolution or frame rate can cause the source not to display. A 4K60 canvas or output setting cannot turn a source that is not 4K60 into native 4K60 footage.

msi Gaming GeForce GT 1030 4GB DDR4 64-bit HDCP Support DirectX 12 DP/HDMI Single Fan OC Graphics Card (GT 1030 4GD4 LP OC)
  • Chipset: NVIDIA GeForce GT 1030
  • Video Memory: 4GB DDR4
  • Boost Clock: 1430 MHz
  • Memory Interface: 64-bit
  • Output: DisplayPort x 1 (v1.4a) / HDMI 2.0b x 1
  • If 3840×2160 at 60 fps is offered by the device, select that supported mode and confirm the source displays correctly.
  • If it is not offered, check the device’s supported modes and connection or capture setup before changing OBS output settings.
  • If the source is lower resolution or frame rate, OBS may scale or repeat frames for a larger or faster output; that is not the same as capturing native 4K60.

Check OBS version, platform, and encoder availability

Encoder choices depend on the operating system and supported hardware. If an encoder option is absent, verify that the platform and hardware support it. The exact reason an OBS control is missing can vary with the OBS version, operating system, active outputs, selected service or encoder, and attached devices; there is no single universal fix for every Settings-page difference.

Separate an unavailable option from an unstable 4K60 stream

If you can select 3840×2160 and 60 fps but the broadcast drops frames, stutters, or fails to reach YouTube reliably, diagnose the encoder, rendering load, and upload connection. OBS needs GPU resources to composite scenes, and 60 fps can demand considerably more system capacity than 30 fps.

  1. Run a short test with the same scene, motion, and audio you expect in the real broadcast.
  2. If OBS reports rendering or encoding difficulty, simplify the scene and reduce other system load. Temporarily lower output resolution or frame rate to see whether the problem clears.
  3. Compare the result at 30 fps and at a lower resolution. If those are stable but 4K60 is not, the system or network may not have enough headroom for the target combination.
  4. Restore one setting at a time and test again. This helps distinguish a source limit from rendering, encoding, or upload capacity.

OBS’s performance guidance recommends reducing output resolution or frame rate as troubleshooting steps. A lower setting is a diagnostic, not proof that a particular component must be replaced.

Match YouTube’s 4K60 ingest settings

YouTube supports 4K/2160p at 60 fps, and its current English-language encoder guidance lists 60 fps as the maximum frame rate. For 4K60, YouTube recommends different bitrates by codec; these are platform recommendations, not guarantees that a particular encoder, internet provider, or stream key will sustain the stream.

Codec YouTube’s recommended 4K60 bitrate Listed minimum
AV1 or H.265 (HEVC) 35 Mbps 10 Mbps
H.264 50 Mbps 14 Mbps

Use these figures as YouTube’s published encoder settings, not as a measurement of your connection. Your available upload capacity needs to sustain the selected stream bitrate consistently, with room for normal network variation and other upload activity.

  • Rate control: YouTube recommends CBR.
  • Keyframes: YouTube recommends a two-second interval, not exceeding four seconds.
  • Latency: YouTube says 4K/2160 streams do not have the low-latency option and use normal latency.
  • Preflight: Test with movement and audio similar to the actual broadcast, then monitor stream health in YouTube Live Control Room.

YouTube Help advises: “Make sure that you test before you start your live stream.” A successful OBS preview does not by itself establish that the upload path and YouTube ingest will remain stable throughout a live broadcast.

Check the YouTube stream key only when YouTube detects the wrong mode

YouTube normally detects resolution and frame rate automatically. If the YouTube side does not detect the intended mode, review the stream setup in Live Control Room and confirm OBS is using the intended stream key. YouTube also supports custom stream keys with manual stream-resolution settings.

  1. In YouTube Live Control Room, check the selected stream and its settings.
  2. In OBS, open Settings > Stream and confirm the service and stream key match the intended YouTube stream.
  3. If using a custom key with manual resolution settings, verify that those settings match the output you configured in OBS.
  4. Start a test and check YouTube’s stream-health indicators before relying on the setup for an event.

Common 4K60 problems and fixes

What you see Likely area to check What to do
OBS output resolution is not 3840×2160 Video output configuration Open Settings > Video and change Output (Scaled) Resolution. Do not rely on Base (Canvas) Resolution alone.
The capture source is blank after selecting 4K or 60 fps Unsupported capture-device mode Return to the source properties and select a resolution and FPS the device supports.
4K60 fields are available, but the stream stutters Rendering, encoding, or system load Simplify the scene, reduce competing load, and test at lower resolution or frame rate to isolate capacity.
OBS appears stable, but YouTube reports stream-health problems Upload capacity, bitrate, codec, or keyframe configuration Compare the chosen codec and bitrate with YouTube’s guidance, use CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, and test while monitoring stream health.
YouTube does not show the expected resolution or frame rate Stream setup or custom key settings Check the selected Live Control Room stream, OBS stream key, and any manual resolution settings for a custom key.

When to consider different hardware

Do not buy a capture device or graphics card solely because you cannot find a setting. First establish which part of the chain is limiting the result: the source’s supported modes, OBS output controls, the available encoder, system rendering and encoding capacity, or stable upload bandwidth. A hardware change may be relevant only after a known source or system limitation is identified.

If the usual checks do not explain a missing control, record your OBS version and operating system, then gather an OBS log and screenshots of Settings > Video and Settings > Output. The exact interface and available options depend on the setup, so those details are needed to diagnose an unusual case.
