To stream 4K at 60 fps from OBS on a Mac, enable live streaming on your YouTube channel, connect OBS to a stream in YouTube Live Control Room, then set the output to 3840×2160 at 60 fps and configure an encoder, bitrate, and keyframe interval that meet YouTube’s ingest guidance. YouTube recommends 50 Mbps for H.264 or 35 Mbps for AV1 or H.265/HEVC at 4K60; your Mac, encoder options, scene, and stable upload capacity determine whether those settings will work reliably. Test before the broadcast.
Before you start: channel, Mac, and connection
- Enable YouTube Live early. If the channel has never streamed, activate live streaming in YouTube Studio first. YouTube says first-time activation may take up to 24 hours. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains the process.
- Check your Mac and sources. OBS lists macOS 11 or later and an Intel or Apple Silicon CPU as its basic macOS requirements. Those requirements do not certify that a particular Mac can render and encode a complex 4K60 scene. Your camera or capture source must also provide the resolution and frame rate you intend to send. - Plan for upload headroom. The target bitrate must fit a stable upload connection, alongside other network use. YouTube’s bitrate figures are ingest recommendations, not a guarantee of performance on your connection.
How to set up 4K 60fps YouTube Live in OBS on a Mac
- Install OBS. Download the official macOS installer, open the DMG, and drag OBS into Applications. See OBS’s Mac installation instructions.
- Create a YouTube stream. Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. In its stream settings, locate the stream URL and stream key. YouTube documents these in Manage live stream settings.
- Connect OBS to YouTube. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select the service/server setup available for YouTube, and enter or connect the stream URL and key as prompted. Interface labels can vary by OBS version. Treat the key as a password: anyone who has it may be able to send a stream to your channel. YouTube allows custom keys that can be reused where appropriate.
- Set video dimensions and frame rate. In OBS, open Settings > Video. Set both the base (canvas) resolution and output (scaled) resolution to 3840×2160, and set the common FPS value to 60. If the original camera or screen source is lower resolution, scaling it to 4K does not add real source detail.
- Configure the encoder and output. In Settings > Output, use the streaming output settings and select an encoder supported by your Mac (see the next section). Set rate control to CBR, keyframe interval to 2 seconds, and bitrate according to the codec and connection capacity. YouTube’s current live encoder settings recommend RTMPS where available. They specify a two-second keyframe interval and a maximum of four seconds. YouTube’s live encoder settings
- Configure audio and color for a standard SDR stream. For stereo, use AAC audio at 44.1 kHz. YouTube lists 48 kHz for 5.1 surround and says 5.1 over RTMP/RTMPS is supported only with AAC. For SDR, its recommended color space is Rec. 709 with 8-bit depth. These are YouTube ingest settings; confirm OBS and your audio sources are configured consistently.
- Start a test stream and inspect it. Use an unlisted or private stream if that fits your needs. Reproduce the real broadcast’s motion, audio, sources, and overlays. Check the Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages, and verify picture, sound, and bitrate stability on the actual connection before the event.
What bitrate do you need for 4K 60fps YouTube Live?
YouTube’s live-stream recommendations for 4K/2160p at 60 fps are codec-specific:

These are YouTube’s live ingest figures, not separate recommendations for uploading prerecorded videos. The minimums are not a reliability target: choose a bitrate your connection can sustain steadily, and test it with the complete scene. YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 as ingest codecs, but codec availability depends on the encoder exposed by your installed OBS version and Mac. Do not assume every codec is available on every Mac.
Which encoder should you use on an Apple Silicon or Intel Mac?
Apple Silicon: VideoToolbox with H.264
OBS documents Apple VideoToolbox streaming with H.264 on Apple Silicon Macs. Hardware encoding can reduce CPU workload, but it does not guarantee that the full scene will render and encode at 4K60 without dropped frames. Intel Mac: x264
OBS directs Intel Mac users to x264 for streaming. Its documentation says the Intel VideoToolbox streaming path does not support the constant-bitrate mode required by most streaming services. Select x264 rather than relying on that VideoToolbox path for a CBR stream.
If the Mac cannot hold 4K60
Performance depends on the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity; the source, overlays, browser sources, cooling, and other workloads also matter. If testing shows rendering or encoding trouble, simplify the scene or reduce output resolution or frame rate, then test again. There is no single Mac model threshold that can be inferred from OBS’s basic system requirements.

Test, latency, and common problems
Use a realistic test
YouTube advises testing before the event and monitoring stream health. Test with the same movement, audio, sources, and overlays you plan to use, then review the Live Control Room preview and health indicators. YouTube Help puts it simply: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
Expect normal latency at 4K
YouTube says 4K/2160p live streams cannot use its low-latency option and use normal latency. If your broadcast depends on near-real-time audience interaction, account for that delay when planning it.

Diagnose the failure by symptom
- YouTube does not receive a signal: check that OBS has the correct stream URL and current key, and that the stream is started in OBS. If needed, re-copy the details from the intended Live Control Room stream.
- Unstable stream health or bitrate: the connection may not sustain the configured bitrate. Test again on the broadcast connection, reduce other upload activity, or select a lower bitrate that remains stable.
- Dropped frames or choppy output: check OBS’s rendering/encoding status and simplify demanding scenes, sources, or overlays. If needed, lower resolution or FPS and repeat the representative test.
- Stream works but is not 4K60: verify both OBS output dimensions and FPS, then confirm the source itself supplies 4K60. A lower-resolution source enlarged in OBS remains limited by its original detail.
- Audio is missing or wrong: verify the selected audio source and levels in OBS, then listen to the YouTube preview during the test. Confirm the chosen channel layout and sample rate match the intended stereo or surround setup.
