If the content you need appears later through JavaScript, wait for a locator that identifies that content before capturing; a generic network lull does not prove the screenshot is ready.
Wait for navigation, then for the content your screenshot needs
This minimal Playwright example waits for the normal navigation milestone, then waits for a page-specific heading before taking the screenshot:

})();Replace the example URL and heading with values from the page you are capturing. The locator should identify the specific content or state that matters—not merely an element that happens to exist early. If the screenshot only needs the page’s initially loaded resources, the locator wait may be unnecessary:

await page.screenshot({ path: 'screenshot.png' });Playwright’s Page API documentation says that page.goto() waits for the load event by default. Its screenshot example navigates and captures. The additional locator wait is useful when an application renders the required content after that event.

Choose the right meaning of “finished loading”
Browser navigation milestones describe different stages. None universally guarantees that every application-specific element you want is visible and settled.

These definitions are documented in the Playwright Page API. Playwright explicitly discourages networkidle for testing and recommends using assertions to assess readiness. As its documentation puts it: “Most of the time, this method is not needed because Playwright auto-waits before every action.” For a screenshot, make readiness explicit when the required state is application-specific.

Wait for dynamic content with an observable condition
JavaScript-heavy pages can continue changing after a navigation milestone. Wait for the element, text, or state that must appear in the captured image. A role-based locator is one option; choose a condition supported by the target page and meaningful to your result.

await page.screenshot({ path: 'report.png' });The timeout here is an explicit example, not a universal recommendation. Adjust it to the page and the time budget of your capture job. If the condition does not become true, Playwright reports a timeout instead of silently treating an incomplete capture as ready.

For a workflow that depends on navigation rather than the default load event, specify the milestone in goto():

await page.screenshot({ path: 'report.png' });Using an earlier milestone can let your code proceed sooner, but it does not remove the need to wait for later content if the screenshot requires it.

Selenium: treat page-load strategy as a starting point
Selenium offers three page-load strategies. Its documentation says normal waits for document ready state complete, eager waits for interactive, and none does not block navigation. These control navigation behavior, but they do not guarantee that a single-page application has finished its later JavaScript changes.
After navigation, explicitly wait for the element or state that must appear in the screenshot. Selenium’s Browser Options and Waiting Strategies explain the distinction: document ready state concerns assets declared in HTML, while JavaScript can continue changing the page and adding elements.

Troubleshoot incomplete or slow captures
- The screenshot is missing a heading, card, or result: The page may render that content after
load. Add a wait for a locator that specifically identifies the missing content. - The capture proceeds after
DOMContentLoaded, but images or other resources are missing: That event only marks an earlier document milestone. Use the defaultloadwait or another condition that reflects the resources your screenshot needs. networkidlenever arrives or arrives before the page looks ready: Do not equate network quiet with visual readiness. Use a locator or application-specific condition instead.- A locator wait times out: Check that the selector or accessible name matches the actual page, that the expected content is reachable in the current page state, and that the timeout fits the site’s behavior. A timeout is a failed readiness check, not proof the page is ready.
- The page is an SPA or updates after navigation: Treat navigation completion and application readiness as separate steps. Wait for the exact content needed in the image.
