Then check the encoder has the current key. Browser troubleshooting can help isolate a session problem, but YouTube does not identify cache or browser state as a confirmed cause of stream-key save failures.
First identify what is not saving
A stream key is the credential an encoder uses to send a video feed to YouTube. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings
Pin down the failing step before changing settings. Is the key missing or unavailable in Live Control Room, does a Studio setting fail to save, does copying fail, or does the encoder reject a pasted key? These are different points in the workflow, and the fix depends on which one fails.
Check the stream and your channel permissions
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live.
- Choose the intended stream, then open Stream and inspect the Stream key controls. Make sure you are working on the stream that the encoder is meant to send to.
- Use YouTube’s controls to select or copy the key rather than assuming a key from an older stream is still the right one. YouTube allows custom keys for reuse; reuse does not remove the need to verify that the key matches your current setup. Manage live stream settings
If you are trying to reset a key, check your channel role. YouTube says only an owner or manager can reset a stream key. Editors and viewers do not have reset permission. If Reset is unavailable, ask an owner or manager to do it.

If needed, reset the key and update the encoder
Reset a key if you suspect the current one is stale or compromised, or if you need to replace it. Resetting rotates the credential: any encoder still configured with the old key will need to be updated.
- In the selected stream’s Stream settings in Live Control Room, reset the key. If you cannot, have a channel owner or manager perform the reset.
- Copy the newly generated key using YouTube’s controls.
- Open the encoder’s settings for the matching YouTube destination, replace the old key, and save the encoder settings.
- Start sending from the encoder. Wait for a preview to appear in Live Control Room and check stream health before clicking Go live. YouTube recommends testing the stream and reviewing stream health before an event. Troubleshoot live stream errors · Create a live stream with an encoder
If your software signs in directly to YouTube rather than using a stream key, YouTube advises contacting that software’s support team when it fails to start. A stream-key reset is not necessarily relevant to a direct-sign-in integration. Troubleshoot live stream errors

Try browser checks as isolation steps
YouTube’s general browser guidance offers possible troubleshooting checks, not a documented fix for a Live Control Room stream-key save failure. Try these one at a time and see whether the specific failure changes:
- Reload Live Control Room, close and reopen the browser, then sign back in.
- Update the browser and restart it.
- Close surplus tabs and retry the same operation in Studio.
- Try Chrome or another supported browser to see whether the problem follows one browser session.
- Restart the device.
- If the problem appears session-related, clear browser cache and cookies, sign in again, and retest. This is suggested on a general YouTube video-error page; that page does not link cache or cookies specifically to stream-key persistence. Fix video playback issues
Before clearing cookies, consider that it may sign you out of websites. If a browser check changes nothing, return to the stream selection, permissions, and encoder checks rather than repeatedly clearing data.

Use the symptom to find the responsible layer

When escalating, state the exact operation that fails—selecting, saving, copying, or pasting/accepting the key—and include your browser and version, channel role, and whether the encoder uses a key or direct sign-in. This helps distinguish a Studio permission or session issue from an encoder integration issue.
Confirm the channel is eligible to livestream
Live-stream eligibility is separate from whether a key saves. YouTube lists channel verification and no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days among its requirements for livestreaming. If you cannot start any stream, check eligibility as well as the key workflow. Get started with live streaming
