If it does, use its documented PDF mode or PDF endpoint, then save the returned PDF bytes to a .pdf file. If it only returns images, use a browser automation library such as Puppeteer or Playwright to render the page as a PDF. A webpage PDF is laid out for printing and may not look exactly like a screenshot.
Choose the right way to make the PDF
A screenshot API may offer PDF as an output format, a separate URL-to-PDF endpoint, or image output only. Check the provider’s API reference before writing code: request fields, authentication, PDF settings, and whether the response is raw bytes or a URL differ by service.
- Use the API’s PDF mode or endpoint when it supports the webpage or HTML input you have and offers the layout controls you need. ScreenshotEngine documents an
outputvalue ofpdf; ScreenshotAPI.net documents a PDF endpoint for a URL or raw HTML. - Use browser automation if your API only returns image files or if you need direct control over the browser’s rendering and PDF options. Puppeteer and Playwright can both generate page PDFs.
A PDF is not simply an image with a PDF extension. PDF generation follows print layout rules, including page breaks and print CSS, so its appearance can differ from a screenshot.
Request PDF output from a hosted API
- Find the provider’s documented PDF output mode or dedicated PDF route. Follow its exact parameter names and authentication method; do not assume another provider’s syntax will work.
- Set the page layout options that the provider supports, such as paper size, orientation, margins, page range, and whether to use print or screen styling.
- Check the response format. If the endpoint returns PDF bytes, write the response body directly to a file ending in
.pdf. If it returns a URL or redirect, retrieve the PDF from that location as documented. - Open the saved file and check that the expected content appears on the right pages. Long pages, print styles, and page breaks can alter the result.

ScreenshotAPI.net documents PDF rendering for both a URL and raw HTML, along with print-related controls. Use each provider’s own reference for the current request shape and response handling.

Generate a PDF with Puppeteer
Puppeteer’s page.pdf() generates a PDF using the print CSS media type. To use screen styles instead, call page.emulateMediaType('screen') before generating the PDF. The following Node.js example navigates to a URL, waits for the page and its fonts, then writes the PDF:

})();Install Puppeteer in your project with npm install puppeteer. The example uses print media, A4 pages, background graphics, and 12 mm margins; change those settings to suit the intended document. Puppeteer’s PDF guide says fonts are awaited by default. For pages that load essential content later, add an appropriate wait for a selector or application state before calling page.pdf().

If the site’s screen styling is the intended appearance, insert await page.emulateMediaType('screen'); before page.pdf(). Print rendering may also adjust colors. A page can request more exact color handling with CSS such as -webkit-print-color-adjust: exact, though the final result still depends on the page and browser rendering.
Generate a PDF with Playwright
Playwright’s page.pdf() returns a PDF buffer. This runnable Node.js example saves that buffer to disk:

})();Install Playwright with npm install playwright. As with Puppeteer, PDF generation uses print media by default. To render screen CSS instead, call await page.emulateMedia({ media: 'screen' }); before page.pdf(). Playwright also documents controls including format, explicit page dimensions, margins, scale, and printBackground.
Choose layout and wait behavior deliberately
- Paper format and orientation: Choose a standard paper format or explicit dimensions supported by your API or library. Select landscape when the page contains wide tables or layouts.
- Margins and scale: Margins affect usable content width and page breaks. Scale can fit content, but may make text difficult to read.
- Backgrounds and colors: Enable background printing if the design depends on colored panels or images. Print rendering can change colors unless the page requests exact print colors.
- Page ranges: If only selected pages are needed, use a page-range control where supported rather than assuming every service exposes one.
- Media type: Use print media for a conventional document; explicitly select screen media when you want screen styles in the PDF.
- Dynamic content: Wait for the page’s required content, fonts, and other assets. A network-idle condition is useful on some pages but may be unsuitable for pages with persistent requests; wait for a meaningful selector or application state when needed.
Troubleshoot common PDF problems
The response is an image, not a PDF
The request may still be using the screenshot endpoint’s default image output. Check the provider’s PDF mode or dedicated endpoint and verify the response content before saving it with a .pdf extension. Renaming an image does not convert it to a PDF.

The PDF is blank or missing late-loading content
The page may not have finished rendering when capture began. Wait for a selector that appears with the required content, or for the relevant page state, before requesting the PDF. For an API, use its documented delay or wait controls if available.
Colors or layout differ from the screenshot
PDF generation generally uses print CSS and paginated layout. If screen styling is required, select screen media using the library’s documented method. Check print styles, background-printing settings, margins, and page size; page breaks can make a full-page screenshot impossible to reproduce exactly in a multi-page document.

Content is clipped or split awkwardly
Review paper size, orientation, scale, and margins. Wide content may need landscape orientation or a larger page; long sections may break across pages. Where the page is under your control, add print-specific CSS to manage page breaks and content sizing.
The PDF file cannot be opened
Confirm that the endpoint returned PDF bytes rather than an error page, JSON response, redirect target, or image. Check the HTTP status and response headers before writing the body to disk, and follow the provider’s instructions for retrieving a URL-based response.

No. PDF output is paginated and can use print CSS, so layout, colors, and page breaks may differ from a screenshot.
