To run a 24/7 UHD channel on AWS, build a continuous live pipeline: deliver a compatible UHD contribution feed to AWS Elemental MediaLive, package its outputs with MediaPackage if you need managed multi-format delivery, and distribute playback through CloudFront. Add independent primary and backup feeds and parallel processing if the service needs redundancy. The AWS Live Streaming solution is a useful architectural starting point, but its published encoding profiles top out at 1080p; a UHD channel needs a customized MediaLive configuration and a cost estimate for the actual design.
This guide describes a live contribution workflow, not a way to turn an uploaded video into a camera-based live production. AWS capabilities and guidance below reflect AWS documentation checked on October 3, 2026. Regional availability, account quotas and pricing can vary.
What the AWS reference architecture does—and what it does not
AWS’s reference design uses MediaLive to ingest and encode live video, MediaPackage to package outputs, and CloudFront to deliver them to viewers. It processes two feeds in parallel for redundancy and supports HLS, DASH and CMAF outputs. It also uses CloudFormation for deployment and includes CloudFront distributions and a demo player bucket.
The distinction that matters for UHD is that MediaLive supports UHD encoding, but the reference solution’s published profiles are not UHD profiles. Its documented ladder uses progressive 30 fps renditions at 540p, 720p and 1080p. Treat those as examples of an adaptive-bitrate setup, not as a ready-made 4K configuration or evidence that deploying the default solution produces UHD.

Plan the channel before creating AWS resources
Specify the contribution feed
Write down the properties of the signal that will reach AWS before selecting an input or encoding profile:
- Input resolution, codec, bitrate and frame rate.
- Whether the signal is already live and UHD, or whether an upstream production system must create it.
- Required audio tracks, captions and alternate-language tracks.
- Whether you will provide independent primary and backup feeds, and how each feed reaches AWS.
- The viewer devices and network conditions you need to serve, including whether lower-resolution companion renditions are required alongside UHD.
The AWS deployment guide lists URL pull, RTMP pull or push, RTP push and MediaConnect as input options. Select an input that fits the upstream workflow, then check current regional availability for the services it depends on. Do not assume two feeds are independent merely because two inputs are configured: verify that their source paths and failure modes meet your resilience requirements.
Choose a delivery design
Decide whether you need MediaPackage’s packaging and origin features or can serve already-formatted outputs from a scalable origin. The reference solution routes MediaLive’s adaptive-bitrate output to MediaPackage, which provides HLS, DASH and CMAF endpoints, and configures CloudFront with those endpoints as origins. Select formats, codecs, authorization and player behavior for your actual device and business requirements; the reference architecture does not establish that every device can play every UHD combination.
Choose redundancy deliberately
The reference design processes two feeds in parallel. That is a design pattern, not proof that a particular deployment will recover successfully. Define what failure you need to withstand—such as loss of a contribution path or an encoding path—and validate the chosen input’s failover behavior and recovery procedures before production. Include the additional processing in the cost model.

Configure MediaLive for UHD
Confirm codec and resolution support
AWS documents UHD/4K output as vertical resolutions above 1080 and up to 2160. MediaLive supports UHD output encoding with H.264/AVC or H.265/HEVC. AWS’s feature-rules documentation states: “Ultra-high definition (UHD or 4K) video is supported with H.264 and H.265.” AV1 is documented for SD and HD, not UHD, so do not select it for a UHD output on the basis of the documented MediaLive capability.
Build the output ladder for your audience
Create a channel-specific UHD output configuration and decide whether to pair it with lower-resolution adaptive-bitrate renditions. A UHD-only output may not suit viewers with limited bandwidth or devices that cannot play the selected format. A UHD-plus-lower-resolution ladder offers more playback choices but changes the number and type of configured outputs. AWS confirms UHD encoding capability but does not prescribe one ladder for every 24/7 channel.
Choose H.264 or H.265 based on your audience’s device support, delivery bitrate targets and workflow constraints. The available AWS documentation establishes these codec families for UHD, not universal device compatibility or a universally better codec. Validate playback on the devices and players you intend to support.
Check the CDI constraint and UHD quota
If the channel uses a CDI input, AWS documents a maximum of one UHD output encode for that channel. The maximum number of UHD-capable MediaLive channels is governed by a changeable account quota. Confirm the quota in the target AWS account and request an increase if your design requires more capacity; do not assume a published default is available to every account.

Package and deliver the live stream
- Send the MediaLive outputs to the chosen origin path. In the reference architecture, MediaLive produces adaptive-bitrate output for MediaPackage. If you choose a different origin design, verify that it supports the output formats and live playback behavior you need.
- Configure the playback formats and endpoints. The reference solution creates HLS, DASH and CMAF endpoints in MediaPackage. Choose the formats and playback options based on your device, player, codec and business requirements.
- Configure CloudFront with the appropriate origin and cache behavior. The reference design sets MediaPackage endpoints as CloudFront origins. Plan cache behavior for live manifests and segments rather than treating the channel like a static website.
- Restrict origin playback to the intended path. In the reference implementation, MediaPackage authorizes playback requests arriving through CloudFront using a CDN identifier. CloudFront sends the identifier in a header, and the identifier is stored in Secrets Manager. Preserve the authorization relationship when customizing the origin path; do not leave a protected origin accessible through an unintended route.
- Validate end-to-end playback. Check the live manifest and segments through the viewer-facing CloudFront distribution and test the selected formats and renditions on the target players. Confirm behavior under the feed and processing failures your design is meant to handle.
Make the channel a 24/7 service
A continuously operating channel is a persistent service, not just an event configuration run for a few hours. Define the intended always-on state for inputs, processing, outputs, packaging and delivery, then use it consistently in operational planning and cost estimates. AWS’s MediaLive pricing documentation distinguishes running and idle resource charges: running charges apply to attached inputs and configured outputs, and output charges can apply even when an output is paused. Pausing an output therefore should not be treated as a guaranteed way to eliminate its cost.
The AWS solution’s CloudFormation deployment time estimate is not a production-readiness or UHD-validation guarantee. Its template is customizable; an operator still needs to configure and verify the UHD profile, security, availability, monitoring and operational procedures required by the channel.
Pre-launch checklist
- Confirm regional availability for MediaLive, MediaPackage and MediaConnect if the selected input uses it.
- Check the target account’s UHD MediaLive quota and MediaPackage channel and endpoint capacity.
- Confirm the required source-feed format is supported for the selected input and region.
- Verify that primary and backup feeds, if used, have the intended independence and failover behavior.
- Validate the UHD output and any companion renditions with the intended codecs, players and devices.
- Verify CloudFront-to-origin authorization and the live cache behavior.
- Review the 24/7 resource state, redundancy and viewer-traffic assumptions in the cost estimate.
Estimate the cost for the real UHD design
AWS’s published live-streaming cost examples use simplifying assumptions and SD or HD ladders; they are not a current quote for a 24/7 UHD channel. Do not scale an example event’s hourly figure into a UHD monthly budget without modeling the changed outputs and traffic. AWS notes that estimates can exceed actual running costs and are subject to price changes.
Build a fresh estimate with current pricing for the chosen region and configuration. Include the following categories and assumptions:

The deployment runs, but there is no UHD output
Check whether the deployed channel is still using the reference solution’s documented 540p, 720p and 1080p profiles. Those are SD/HD examples, not a UHD profile. Configure and validate a channel-specific UHD output, confirm the selected codec is H.264 or H.265, and verify the source feed and intended output parameters.
A CDI-based channel cannot produce the intended number of UHD encodes
Check whether the channel uses CDI input. AWS documents a one-UHD-output-encode maximum for a CDI input channel. If the design needs more UHD outputs, reassess the input and output architecture against the documented constraint before building around it.
The account cannot create the planned UHD capacity or endpoints
Check the account’s current MediaLive UHD-channel quota and MediaPackage channel or endpoint quotas in the target Region. AWS warns that account quotas can be lower than published defaults. Request a quota increase where available, and confirm regional service availability before treating the planned capacity as deployable.

Viewers cannot retrieve playback through CloudFront
Check the origin relationship: the reference path authorizes MediaPackage requests through CloudFront with a CDN identifier header, and stores that identifier in Secrets Manager. Verify that the intended distribution sends the expected header and that the origin is configured to accept that authorized path. Also check that CloudFront’s origin and live cache behavior match the selected MediaPackage endpoints.
The projected bill is higher than an event estimate
Revisit the estimate using the channel’s real UHD outputs, continuous operating hours, feed count, redundancy and viewer delivery assumptions. SD/HD event examples do not establish the cost of an always-on UHD service, and pausing an output may not remove its configured-output charge.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the actual goal is to keep a YouTube channel live by looping uploaded videos—not to ingest a live UHD contribution feed into a custom AWS pipeline—StreamNeo is a simpler fit. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the video as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it also attempts automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded-video YouTube streams, not camera-based live production or a replacement for the AWS architecture above.
