For Tamil text to display correctly, the Chrome runtime must have access to a suitable Tamil font; verify the saved image rather than assuming the page’s text rendered correctly.
Capture a page with Selenium and headless Chrome
This Python example saves a PNG of Chrome’s current window. It creates the output directory, chooses a viewport, checks Selenium’s success result, and always closes the browser.
from pathlib import Path
from selenium import webdriver
from selenium.webdriver.chrome.options import Options
output = Path("screenshots/page.png").resolve()
output.parent.mkdir(parents=True, exist_ok=True)
options = Options()
options.add_argument("--headless")
options.add_argument("--window-size=1365,900")
driver = webdriver.Chrome(options=options)
try:
driver.get("https://example.com")
saved = driver.save_screenshot(str(output))
if not saved:
raise OSError(f"Could not save screenshot to {output}")
finally:
driver.quit()
Install Selenium and configure Chrome and ChromeDriver in the environment where this script will run. The exact compatible versions depend on what is installed there. Chrome’s documentation demonstrates passing --headless through Selenium options; Chrome 112 unified Headless with the ordinary Chrome browser code. The older Headless implementation is available only as the standalone chrome-headless-shell binary from Chrome 132.0.6793.0 onward, so older instructions that insist on --headless=new are not universally necessary. See Chrome Headless documentation.
Choose the capture dimensions
--window-size=1365,900 sets the browser window dimensions for this example. Change those values to suit the page and the image you need. Selenium’s save_screenshot() captures the current window; it does not, by itself, promise an image of the entire scrollable page.

Wait for the page before saving
driver.get() navigates to the URL, but pages can continue rendering content or loading fonts afterward. For a page that updates asynchronously, wait for a page-specific condition before capturing—for example, the appearance of a known element or a condition tied to that page’s font readiness. A fixed sleep is not a reliable readiness test for every page.
Make sure Tamil text renders correctly
Tamil glyphs depend on the fonts available to Chrome in the actual operating system, container, or server running the browser. If Tamil characters appear as empty squares, missing-glyph boxes, or unexpected fallback shapes, check the runtime’s installed and enabled fonts and make a test capture after correcting them. Font installation commands differ by Linux distribution and container image; there is no single package command established here for every environment.
Rank #2
- Run the capture in the same environment that will produce the final image.
- Use a page with known Tamil text and wait for its content and fonts to finish loading.
- Open the resulting PNG and inspect the Tamil glyphs for missing characters or unwanted fallback rendering.
- If the text is wrong, resolve font availability in that runtime before relying on the screenshot.
Save an element instead of the current window
If you need a component rather than the whole visible browser window, Selenium’s browser guide documents element capture with element.screenshot():
element = driver.find_element("css selector", ".article-content")
element.screenshot("screenshots/article-content.png")
Replace .article-content with a selector that matches the element you want. This is a separate capture choice from driver.save_screenshot(). For a full-page image, use a separately verified full-page technique; the current-window call alone does not capture the entire scrollable document. See Selenium’s browser guide.

When Chrome’s command line is enough
For a one-off capture that does not need Selenium-driven interactions or test setup, Chrome’s command-line screenshot option is an alternative. It is not a Selenium method. Chrome documents --screenshot to write screenshot.png in the current working directory, --window-size for dimensions, and --timeout to bound the wait before capture. See the Chrome Headless CLI reference.
| Approach | Best fit | Control and limits |
|---|---|---|
| Selenium WebDriver | A page state that must be established with browser automation or test steps. | Navigate and interact before saving; choose a window size and wait for page-specific readiness. |
| Chrome CLI | A simple URL capture without Selenium automation. | Use Chrome’s CLI screenshot, size, and timeout options; this route is distinct from WebDriver. |
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo can capture a URL through one GET request. Its clean-shot steps can accept cookie or consent banners and remove known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides screenshot tools for AI agents.

Troubleshooting
- No PNG appears: Check that the output directory exists and is writable, the path is correct, and the filename ends in
.png. Selenium documents thatsave_screenshot(filename)returnsFalseon an I/O error; the example turns that result into an explicit exception. - The screenshot is blank or incomplete: The page may not have finished loading dynamic content. Wait for the relevant element or page-specific readiness condition, then inspect the captured image.
- Tamil letters are missing or malformed: Check fonts in the Chrome runtime, not just on your local desktop. Capture and inspect a Tamil test page after fonts are available.
- The image is clipped: The documented call captures the current window. Set a suitable window size or capture a specific element; do not treat it as an automatic full-page capture.
- Chrome will not start: Check the Chrome and ChromeDriver versions installed in that environment and their compatibility. The required pairing depends on those versions.
